To think that Scottish Independence is now inevitable and who can blame them, so good luck Scotland!

That’s it really. Unfortunately, I think this Brexit deal will probably go through tomorrow. But even if there was a referendum, people will probably vote for whatever deal going because everyone is demented with Brexit fatigue. And even if we did remain following another referendum, there would be so much backlash and unpleasantness from certain elements of the far right it doesn’t bear thinking about.

It’s extemely depressing. I’m in a Remain London Borough. Never really met a Brexiteer, but what can you do?

I can’t imagine how livid the Scottish people must feel though. Their referendum was fairly marginal, but I think if they’d seen this coming the Scottish independence vote would have won through.

Anyway, NS is definitely gearing up for another Scottish referendum and who could blame her? At least Scotland have the option of getting out of this nightmare. I’m sure they’ll be independent within a year or so and good for them. I wish them all the best.

AIBU to think the legacy of Brexit will be Scottish Independence and the end of the UK as we know it?

@HirplesWithHaggis you spoke too soon, sorry!

Yeah, I noticed that. Oh well.

I want to know what happens if Scotland becomes independent and you were born in Scotland to Scots parents who still live there but you have lived in England for over 30 years and you want to stay in England? Asking for a friend wink

You'll be entitled to Scottish citizenship. :)

montysma1 · 18/10/2019 13:53

I can only hope that Scotland has the sense to launch the life boats this time.

OnTopOfTheWardrobe · 18/10/2019 14:06

Can Scotland become independent and make England a colony?
Asking for a friend.

SusanneLinder · 18/10/2019 14:07

@Queenunikitty , you'll still be Scottish and can live where you like. I am English born living in Scotland.
@Fatshedra , you don't have to like the SNP to support Independence. Likelihood is that there will be an election shortly after and you can vote who you like. Many people are lending their vote to the SNP at moment until Independence is in the bag.
Regarding the EU, I have very recently spoken to MEPS on the issue of Scotland in the EU. The EU are looking at us very differently from 2014, mainly because we have stated that we don't want to leave ( well most anyway).
Yes, we will have to reapply, but as we already fulfil the majority of the requirements it should be relatively straightforward, and they don't have any issues with us joining. There will obviously be negotiations on both sides . As far as I am aware, there is no requirement to join the Euro but that would be part of the negotiations. Not that I care, it's doing far better than the pound!
And the stuff about Spain vetoing us because of Catalonia is incorrect. Spain only said we have to reapply , but we knew that anyway. You can confirm that on fullfactcheck.org.

Brooklynninenineninetynine · 18/10/2019 14:07

@Fatshedra so you would vote against independence because you dont like the current government? Simple, just vote for a different party after independence. I'm sure the snp will lose a lot of support afterwards since that's their main goal, once it's achieved many will move on

KennDodd · 18/10/2019 14:10

I think you're right.

Leave voters don't give a shit about the UK though, polling has shown they think the break up of UK is worth it for Brexit. I think many will be celebrating Scotland and NI (and Wales) departure.

Predictions from me:
This deal goes through.
GE with Tory win.
No trade deal agreed with EU during transition period.
We then no deal Brexit.
Rise (even more) in English nationalism and calls for English independence (Farage in support).
Troubles kick of in NI started by Unionists.
Calls to withdraw us from ECHR.
Second independence vote in Scotland, independence win.

I want to know what happens if Sotland becomes independent and you were born in England to English parents but you don't want to be English and would rather move to Scotland and be a Scot? Asking for a close relative.

I want to know what happens if your Granddad was Scottish but you have lived in England all your life? Asking for myself Grin

I read somewhere that the proposal would be five years residence for citizenship/naturalisation, for anyone, not just Englis. Also read citizenship would be available to all resident on the day of independence, so move up now and vote Yes! Grin

HirplesWithHaggis · 18/10/2019 14:40

nancy75 Also read one grandparent would be enough, it struck me as similar to the Irish process.

KennDodd · 18/10/2019 14:45

Joking aside, if that were the case I would.

Inappropriatefemale · 18/10/2019 14:46

I am a Scottish native and I didn’t vote for independence back when and this won’t make me change my mind either, I would rather stick with the UK.

Morgan12 · 18/10/2019 14:48

Actually I think people will be scared to vote yes this time around as they have seen the mess Brexit has created and fear it will be the same for Scotland to be independent.

But I am not one of them.

FREEDOMMMMMM

Inappropriatefemale · 18/10/2019 14:51

I’m too scared for Scotland to be independent, I see England as the stronger country politically and financially so I want to be with them!

Inappropriatefemale · 18/10/2019 14:51

Stronger than Scotland I meant, obvs.Grin

zsazsajuju · 18/10/2019 14:53

No reason Scotland couldn’t rejoin the EU. I would like to see a Scot-Lund Union rejoin (together with Gibraltar and leave the rest of them to it

JockTamsonsBairns · 18/10/2019 14:54

Genuinely don't get the "good riddance" stuff 🤔. Can anyone elaborate?

nancy75 · 18/10/2019 14:56

JockTamsonsBairns it's because you get free prescriptions and we don't, leading the daily Mail & it's ilk to basically declare that you are bleeding us dry!

LagunaBubbles · 18/10/2019 14:57

Yes it's inevitable. Can see how it's all playing out now. And I can't wait.

Absolutely don't want independence with these lunatics running the asylum

That will be the elected Scottish Government you are referring to. Who just happen to have been voted in. No surprise the SNP want independence and it can't come as a surprise to anyone who voted for them.

Acerbicc · 18/10/2019 14:58

It’s extemely depressing. I’m in a Remain London Borough. Never really met a Brexiteer, but what can you do?

Hmm
Dissimilitude · 18/10/2019 14:58

This Scot won't be voting for independence.

Why compound one idiocy with another, in a fit of pique?

Miaowing · 18/10/2019 14:59

If you think negotiating Brexit is hard - good luck negotiating Scotland leaving the EU.

Brexit is a walk in the park compared to unpicking the UK. Or do you think Scotland gets to walk away and keep everything favourable it currently gets?

Put up a hard border? Or do you assume a free trade deal meaning nothing really changes?

That alone makes it a bad idea.

Mominatrix · 18/10/2019 14:59

I think this is a trickier proposition than it appears on the surface. In order for the EU to survive in the future, it needs to have one central economic policy and one central foreign policy. Macron knows this and supports this. Would Scotland be comfortable with this? Also, there would have to be a hard border between England and the Scotland - can it afford building and manning this infrastructure?

nancy75 · 18/10/2019 15:00

HirplesWithHaggis if that's the case then the selfish me would like you to to vote for independence & rejoin the EU (I really want an EU passport)

The bigger, not selfish part, hopes that whatever happens the people of Scotland are given enough information to make a good choice & don't end up with a Brexit style shitshow
