To think that Scottish Independence is now inevitable and who can blame them, so good luck Scotland!

That’s it really. Unfortunately, I think this Brexit deal will probably go through tomorrow. But even if there was a referendum, people will probably vote for whatever deal going because everyone is demented with Brexit fatigue. And even if we did remain following another referendum, there would be so much backlash and unpleasantness from certain elements of the far right it doesn’t bear thinking about.

It’s extemely depressing. I’m in a Remain London Borough. Never really met a Brexiteer, but what can you do?

I can’t imagine how livid the Scottish people must feel though. Their referendum was fairly marginal, but I think if they’d seen this coming the Scottish independence vote would have won through.

Anyway, NS is definitely gearing up for another Scottish referendum and who could blame her? At least Scotland have the option of getting out of this nightmare. I’m sure they’ll be independent within a year or so and good for them. I wish them all the best.

AIBU to think the legacy of Brexit will be Scottish Independence and the end of the UK as we know it?

Do you really think Scottish people will vote for a Scoxit from the UK after seeing what happened during Brexit?

LagunaBubbles · 18/10/2019 15:00

JockTamsonsBairns it's because you get free prescriptions and we don't, leading the daily Mail & it's ilk to basically declare that you are bleeding us dry!

Do people still really believe this old shit? The Scottish Gov chooses to spend some of its budget on providing free prescriptions. The English NHS has a budget to which could be used likewise but the Gov doesn't choose to do so. They fund health services that the Scottish Gov don't e.g. Walk in centres.

Miaowing · 18/10/2019 15:01

I meant Scotland leaving the UK not the EU. Bloody fat thumbs

nancy75 · 18/10/2019 15:02

LagunaBubbles the simple answer is yes, some people believe any old shit they are told (just pointing out it's not my view!)

Velveteenfruitbowl · 18/10/2019 15:04

I never really understood the whole Scottish independence thing. I can see that Scotland is culturally a bit different from other parts of Britain but it seems quite poor and very small. I just don’t understand why they would want to split.

KennDodd · 18/10/2019 15:06

Also, there would have to be a hard border between England and the Scotland - can it afford building and manning this infrastructure?
Won't they just use the same magical invisible infrastructure they'll use in Ireland?

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 18/10/2019 15:07

Scoxit Hmm would be completely different from Brexit. The SNP had a fully analysed, fully costed plan in place at the time of the first indyref. You might or might not have liked what they were proposing but it was there for all to read and consider. I'm not seeing the parallels with David Cameron's government at the time of the Brexit referendum.

Grafittiqueen · 18/10/2019 15:07

I'm Scottish and thiink that scexit will be more damaging than Brexit.

Inappropriatefemale · 18/10/2019 15:08

IMO then most people that wanted Scotland to be independent were being patriotic more than anything and Sturgeon just wants to be the Queen of the CastleConfused

Trewser · 18/10/2019 15:08

Yes Scotland wanting independence for the same tired old reasons that the UK wanted to leave the EU!

You'd think they'd have learnt!

WhereDidTheOddSockGo · 18/10/2019 15:08

Hard border between England and Scotland? Nae bother... Bits of Hadrian's wall still exist, we'd just do a few wee repairs and take the north of England with us too!

Tavannach · 18/10/2019 15:11

Of course it's inevitable.

I'm Scottish living in London and my Scottish friends on Facebook are all for it.
Why on earth would a country with socialist leanings want to remain tied to a country which wants to turn itself into a financial services area for the USA?

Mominatrix · 18/10/2019 15:11

Won't they just use the same magical invisible infrastructure they'll use in Ireland?

No - there is no international accord to fudge so the EU would want a hard border.

EagleVisionSquirrelWork · 18/10/2019 15:12

I would move to Scotland tomorrow (and claim my independence day citizenship!) if I was confident they would both get and win indyref2. If they don't, on either count, I'm worried that Scotland will be left grasping the shitty end of the Brexit stick once we've properly left and the full blast of the post-Brexit recession makes itself felt. Then what? I have school-age children. We can't move our country of residence every year or two. Confused

Trewser · 18/10/2019 15:13

I'm Scottish living in London and my Scottish friends on Facebook are all for it oh well then

That would be like Jeremy Corbyn winning the election and the UK remaining in the EU then!

ny20005 · 18/10/2019 15:17

@Velveteenfruitbowl

'Quite poor & very small' I'm assuming you've never been to Scotland or looked at a map 🙄

Celebelly · 18/10/2019 15:18

Hope so. I know of quite a few No voters who have changed their mind, including my very English DP!

sluj · 18/10/2019 15:19

I wonder how hard the "Westminster " government would fight to get a deal with Scotland though? There was a lot at stake economically leaving the EU but would there be a reason to negotiate hard (or at all) for Scotland/RUK trade deals.
It might go one of two ways-

  1. RUK says Scotland has to negotiate along with everyone else and no real need for economic concessions from the RUK.
  2. The RUK takes the British stance of feeling guilty and paying over the odds to maintain good will .
If Boris were in charge then, I wouldn't like to guess how it would go. On the idea of Scotland joining the EU, it was interesting to see that the EU has voted against expansion again this morning.
RasberryRoyale · 18/10/2019 15:21

The EU have repeatedly said Scotland would have to re apply for membership and my understanding is that it’s not a guarantee.

I’m sick and tired of the shower of shite stirring up trouble. The country hasn’t even gone through Brexit yet and all the ramifications from that and they want to put the country through more uncertainty and strife?

She doesn’t speak for me. The snp can’t criticise the government for ignoring the will of the people when they ignore the 55% that said no. Meanwhile the country is going to shite, education, police and the NHS is a sad state but who cares as long as we get independence.

JaneJeffer · 18/10/2019 15:21

it seems...very small are you a giant?

bellinisurge · 18/10/2019 15:22

I wouldn't blame them. I don't think it's a foregone conclusion after any new referendum but
a) we promised one if there was a material change; and
b) we have treated Scotland like shit over Brexit

Inappropriatefemale · 18/10/2019 15:23

Some English folks seem to see Scotland as some type of underdog country very small and poor, erm it’s really not that bad at all!

Willow2017 · 18/10/2019 15:23

Because everyone elected into Westminster are utter buffoons and I can't believe we are being led by them
Because the Scottish gov haven't fucked up anything at all? 😂😂🤣
NS like AS before her has only one agenda and that's to be the person who won the independence vote.

What Fatshedra said is just the tip of the iceberg.

If you think.brexit was a cock up you ain't seen nothing yet if independence goes through!

dementedma · 18/10/2019 15:26

Fully costed and fully analysed plan in place my arse! Based on oil income which promptly crashed. There were holes big enough in the white paper to drive a bus through in terms of currency, law, Defence, fiscal legislation etc. I voted No to independence last time and will do so again if the SNP cant provide facts, evidence and answers to the tough questions as to how its all going to be paid for! Even higher taxes, anyone?

lancashirelady · 18/10/2019 15:30

If a Scotland did leave the Uk would they have to bring in National Service?
