Just found this post and I'm loving it! I have no butter dish yet :-(
But this thread inspired me to look for one.

Check out this corker I found on Amazon!

Very heartened to find that the villa on our holiday this week has a butter dish, which has been put to use already.

ThinkWittyThoughts · 16/10/2019 17:17

I found one dish to add to my Christmas list but I feel you're right @Rocktheboot : I need more than one... off to search for the second dish.

(Can anyone tell I check this thread on my morning & evening commute 😀)

My whale arrived Grin

ArseDarkly · 16/10/2019 17:22

We have the glass cow, I have had years of unspoken battle with DH as I use it the proper way (butter in large dish, cow lid on top) and he uses it the wrong way. I always get nervous when the butter's getting low knowing that I HAVE to get to the dish and put the new butter in before he does.

Stressful! Shock

Lowlandlucky · 16/10/2019 17:43

My butter dish is a clear plastic lid on a white base from Tupperware, it must be 25 years old. It is used everyday and still looks brand new, i bought it to replace a stainless steel ugly monstrosity my ex mil bought as an engagement present for me

Snausage · 16/10/2019 18:14

This is my butter dish

We need a motto - how about

'Transfats Are Not Butter'?

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2019 18:18

He's lovely, that (or one very like it) is what I want.

Very good Star Like it.

Usingmyindoorvoice · 16/10/2019 19:21

I’m going to ask Father Christmas for another butter dish too.

Usingmyindoorvoice · 16/10/2019 19:22

And a t shirt!

Lollypop701 · 16/10/2019 19:29

@BillywigSting
LTB!!!! This is butter abuse! There is no worse crime... I have just ordered a new butter dish....

morningtoncrescent62 · 16/10/2019 21:14

Oh Snausage he's gorgeous. SarahTancredi I hope you and your whale have many happy years together. My two new butter dishes haven't arrived yet. Sad

I'm a but confused by the plethora of round butter dishes... How are they supposed to be used? Are you supposed to simply 'smush' the butter?

Anyhow, a good cheese cloche is imo just as important as a butter dish...

MitziK · 16/10/2019 21:52

Not sure if it's more common elsewhere, but I know some of the nicest butter I ever bought was from Neal's Yard Dairy off Borough Market and that was in a round pat. Think it might have been from Devon (mainly because DP's from there and gets all happy when something from 'home' turns up in the house).

RhinestoneCowgirl · 16/10/2019 21:57

I made our butter dish in a pottery evening class when DD was a baby (she's nearly 11 now)

I have the glass cow one I bought it from bury market last year. I'm having butter dish envy after seeing so many beautiful ones on here.

Interesting! I adore our local farmer's little shop (and locally sourced food in general) but I really don't think I've ever seen a round butter... Might be a geographical issue.

These dishes look somewhat messy as well. Does the butter come in that form? Is it more of a smushing thing? Are you supposed to melt the butter and pour it @ in? Confused

Oh I'm loving this thread. I might sound like a dimwit here but doesn't think butter slip around on the tray like dishes?

@historysock - I absolutely love your butter dish, where is it from?

NoProblem123 · 17/10/2019 00:00

Sound of science you’re just too funny

Standard glass cow for me thank you very much but I feel the need for a spare now 😁

Creepster · 17/10/2019 04:42

Nope. It's easy peasy. Unwrap the cube and plop it in but leave the wrapper resting on top for a bit. When the butter has softened you put your palm on the wrapper and press it into the dish. Not messy at all.
Some creamery butter is sold in rolls which is, I think, why some butter dishes are round.

CravingCheese · 17/10/2019 06:22

Ah... Where I live butter is pretty much exclusively sold in cuboids of various sizes.

Unless you buy something like this: (but those are fairly rare. Mostly found at certain speciality shops)
