No more Flora for me, they’ve just announced they’re having nothing to do with the hate site mumsnet. mobile.twitter.com/StopFundingHate/status/1182647264046669824

Its interesting how many posters think MN is a transphobic forum but stick around anyway.

If this site is a hotbed of transphobic bigots why use it?

Toorahtoorahaye · 11/10/2019 19:58

It's not reflective, which you see more when the discussion comes through occasionally onto AIBU, even though if you just frequented the FWR board it'd seem like it was reflective of all. It's really not.

What views are not reflective? That men can’t conceive and give birth? That sports should be sex segregated rather than by gender? That self id is problematic?

The thing is, many people hear on the rumour mill about transphobia on MN. Then they take a quick peek and, wow, there ARE a lot of posts about trans issues. So the quick assumption is the rumours must be right. Women are told off and told to stop talking.

Those who spend a little time reading often end up staying to question, discuss and (shock) even agree that there are serious issues at play here. Medicalising children for not adhering to sex stereotypes is just one.

Flora jumped to the wrong conclusion here and assumed the worst of women who largely want only to protect the few hard won rights they have.

I won’t be buying Flora again.

PinkyU · 11/10/2019 20:00

Perhaps it’s the fact that there are posters who write transphobic things in the first place, repeatedly, that are then left to stand for hours, until they are reported, said posts are then left to stand for hours whilst they’re “investigated”, and then are finally deleted because they are found to be transphobic.

Maybe that’s what this company find go against their values of inclusivity and don’t want to be affiliated with? Perhaps if MN were to take a harder stance with repeated offenders and were to remove offensive posts in a timely manner, they would not lose revenue nor be tarnished with the reputation that they do?

PinkyU · 11/10/2019 20:02

I stick around because I don’t think echo chambers are healthy.

Trewser · 11/10/2019 20:05

It's beyond ironic that they announced this on Twitter, of all places. Why won't they boycott Twitter, which has some truly awful shit on it. Why pick on a site predominantly used by women? Oh, wait...

HumberElla · 11/10/2019 20:08

PinkyU I would disagree that many deleted comments were actually transphobic in the first place. Talk guidelines on this issue are very strict. Correctly sexing a serial rapist was until recently deemed against talk guidelines for example.

Also having a reputation for free speech, an ability to back up assertions with evidence and telling the truth is an interesting way for you to describe ‘being tarnished’

Toorahtoorahaye · 11/10/2019 20:08

I’m glad they’re fine with the transphobia, ageism, homophobia, racism, misogyny, porn etc on twitter and FB

The thing is, like most posters on here, I was broadly sympathetic to trans rights until attempts were made to railroad through every issue where biological sex is the issue - things like allowing 6'2" male-born people to play women's rugby (where women risk spinal injuries as a result), or putting multiple rapists still in possession of their penises into women's prisons.

Brenda who was born Brian in accounts? Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Men in women's sports, male sex offenders in women's prisons - bothers me a great deal.

Being told I can't talk about those things because even raising the issue of whether it was a good idea to put a multiple rapist in a women's prison where he went on to sexually assault several of the inmates - because just trying to talk about it would make me a hateful bigot. The whole "no debate" schtick. That's fuck off to the far side of fuck territory as far as I'm concerned.

And it would appear Upfield have chosen a side on this one. Which is a shame, because although I wouldn't dream of spreading flora on bread, it is quite good for baking with, and now I will have to find a good alternative.

12 million unique users a month, isn't it? Mostly women, mostly mothers, mostly the people doing the weekly grocery shop. Yes, I think this is a Ratners moment.

HumberElla · 11/10/2019 20:11

Indeed, the hypocrisy of the self righteous Twitter announcement!

I bet their next Comm’s meeting will be interesting.

colourlessgreenidea · 11/10/2019 20:12

People still buy Flora? How retro!

Exactly what I was going to say!

Bless them, trying to be all current and ‘ting’ Grin

GlitterToast · 11/10/2019 20:13

Titania McGrath is on it! Grin

Mmm, I mean twitter's got actual Nazis on it ffs.

MrsMaisie/OnAnother or quite frankly I'd ask my grans dog if it meant we got an answer ...

Please share examples of this hate you've seen?

fatulousatforty · 11/10/2019 20:22

This is the week that social media has really come into its own
#wagatha
#Transbutter

PinkyU · 11/10/2019 20:23

They didn’t “pick” this site, they were asked to give a reason as to why they were comfortable being affiliated with this specific site due to transphobic posts. The company investigated the allegation made toward MN, agreed that it was intact the case and announced that they would no longer be affiliated.

They’ve not chosen any particular outlet, they are responding to a query, then have taken (strong) action.

Waveysnail · 11/10/2019 20:23

Meh my kids prefer flora dairy free over every other free from brand

marfisa · 11/10/2019 20:24

They've not called MN a hate site, they've become aware of the transphobia displayed by a small but vocal element on MN and as a result no longer wish to be associated with it.

Yes, this, exactly this.

NearlyGranny · 11/10/2019 20:26

However hard it tries, it can never be real butter because it still has its palm oil.

SilverySurfer · 11/10/2019 20:26

I would be devastated except I hate the oily, greasy shit so don't give a damn.

Trewser · 11/10/2019 20:26

they've become aware of the transphobia displayed by a small but vocal element on MN and as a result no longer wish to be associated with it

But they are happy to stay on Twitter.

Right.

HumberElla · 11/10/2019 20:28

Nope. Their contract with MN and the (multiple) product tests with them had already come to an end. More likely the social media bod was after quick, freebie woke points with a knee jerk response.

Bezalelle · 11/10/2019 20:28

But if all this transphobia is deleted, surely Mumsnet isn't a transphobic site.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 11/10/2019 20:30

Flora is fucking rank
