No more Flora for me, they’ve just announced they’re having nothing to do with the hate site mumsnet. mobile.twitter.com/StopFundingHate/status/1182647264046669824

I wonder who started this all off by publicly dropping MN? Do you know, I can't possibly remember. If you want to suggest a general palm oil or Uganda boycott, best start another thread. This one is about Upfield and their blatant hypocrisy on the issue of human rights.

Although we clearly, already established in our discussion yesterday, that you and I have opposing views on trans issues, you are bang on here^^.

Probably, most people on here wouldn't know about Uganda. I have to admit, I didn't even know about that law, which is ignorant of me.

It is because Flora has gone after MN that I am now aware of this. Own goal Flora fuckwits. You and your products are disgusting in every possible 🖕🤢.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/10/2019 09:11

Bringing ethical consumerism to a wider audience is a good thing.

When companies behave badly, continued custom gives just them permission - so they cut more corners and lower standards further. When they throw a spotlight on themselves, breaking their backs to appease activists then they throw a light on a lot of bad business.

So don’t buy Flora if your conscience dictates, but don’t deliberately decide to buy it because they say dubious things about a website. Think if you are happy to ignore the other things they get up to.

Yep

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 15/10/2019 09:40

all their spreads are vegan

Actually no, all have the vegan icon, but some may contain milk. Only dairy free flora is truly vegan.

FeckOffGraham · 15/10/2019 10:02

I linked to an article up thread about the vegan / non vegan issue.

Most vegans disregard the "may contain" warnings as they usually just mean that, while no animal products are added as ingredients, they cannot guarantee that cross contamination has not occurred in the place where they're processed. So, if you were super strict about this, you would never eat anywhere where animal products were consumed or prepared. This is very difficult, so most vegans disregard this.

Having said this, vegan or not, there are some very good reasons to avoid eating Flora, as has now come to light.

FeckOffGraham · 15/10/2019 10:04

veganfooduk.co.uk/may-contain-milk/

Here you are^^. Explains it better than I can.

ginghamstarfish · 15/10/2019 10:12

Can't believe anyone still buys that crap anyway. Read up on how margarine is made, with the bleaching, deodorising, colouring, etc etc, nothing natural or good about it, any of them really. I'd rather have nothing than eat that. Butter is superior in every way.

FeckOffGraham · 15/10/2019 10:31

Can't believe anyone still buys that crap anyway

I know. I feel like an idiot. I was buying this because it is plant based and I was kidding myself that it tasted alright - you know, as long as I didn't think about it too much or actually let myself TASTE what I was eating.

Now I think, WTAF was I doing?

They've marketed themselves as this plant based hero, when they are actually a shit stained, nasty company, which doles out the hate, ("MN are a hate site you say? Oh yes, we've investigated and we agree"), when they are apparently guilty of investing in countries with some very seriously, bigoted regimes. Much more heinous than anything that would be allowed to stay up on MN. Reintroduce a "Kill the Gays" law? Yeah, that would stay on MN for approximately a second before being deleted and the poster being banned for life. And rightly so.

AND it tastes revolting when you TASTE it. Plant based is great, but olive oil and coconut oil, nut butters and hummus are a lot nicer than 🤢🖕 Flora.

SesameOil · 15/10/2019 10:44

And re ignorance, right back at you. The scale of palm oil in everyday products seems to have been a revelation to some on this thread. I see no call to arms re boycotting specific other companies, probably due to the subsequent empty cupboards this would entail. The same applies to boycotting companies for other reasons. I find it interesting that Flora and Uganda are the focus, no other companies or countries?

See again, you're getting upset about the use of the word ignorance when it's just a factual term for the level of knowledge you had. You admitted yourself you don't know what's happening on twitter. There's nothing terribly wrong with you not knowing, it just means you made your decision without a full understanding of how hypocritical Upfield are being and how in fact they're actually perfectly fine associating themselves with genuine hate. Now you do know, of course, if you're still sticking to your view based on something other than ignorance, well, that means something rather less excusable.

As for products containing palm oil, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and presume your concern is genuine. This is not a new topic on MN so you've evidently not been paying attention, but by all means start a thread on it if the issue is truly important to you.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 15/10/2019 10:46

FeckOffGraham

Thank you.

FeckOffGraham · 15/10/2019 10:54

Omfg, I thought it was sunflower oil? Is it palm oil? Ugh, seriously, do one Flora. You should not exist as a product.

FeckOffGraham · 15/10/2019 10:55

Is it the sustainable variety? Not that I'll be buying it anyway, but just for my piece of mind.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 15/10/2019 10:58

Is it the sustainable variety? Not that I'll be buying it anyway, but just for my piece of mind.

Apparently so
As a responsible brand, we’re committed to ensuring that the palm oil in Flora is from sources that respect human rights, cause no deforestation or climate change impacts with public acknowledgement by NGOs.

FeckOffGraham · 15/10/2019 11:06

Well that's something I suppose.

Thanks!

midnightmisssuki · 15/10/2019 11:12

Flora is absolute SHIT anyway. No one should eat it. Real butter all the way.

Fuma · 15/10/2019 13:53

What's up with their Twitter? I can't see anything past September on it.

happymumof22019 · 15/10/2019 14:20

Did anyone see their ad about children's lunchboxes? That was enough to put me off buying flora never mind anything else.

FeckOffGraham · 15/10/2019 14:22

Thanks @Erishkigal. I'll take a look later. Just about to start getting ready for the school run again.

NeurotrashWarrior · 15/10/2019 14:35

Welcome @334bu :)

Aridane · 15/10/2019 15:29

Thanks, @Ereshkigal - I did not know that and had assumed certifications of sustainability were accurate

Ereshkigal · 15/10/2019 18:34

No worries, I was quite shocked by it myself.

Datun · 15/10/2019 21:44

Very moving.

mobile.twitter.com/mumofc/status/1183879434811727872?s=21

And whoever runs the mumsnet twitter account has publicly thanked them.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/10/2019 21:48

Why does she say ‘I’ll be gone?’

Datun · 15/10/2019 21:50

Gone as a customer I'm guessing.
