to not give the Amazon delivery driver my date of birth?

Evalina · 11/10/2019 13:48

Amazon just delivered a couple of packages including one for my husband which had alcohol in it. The delivery driver asked me for my date of birth to enter into his handheld device.

I wasn't happy to give it, and said that I was 53 so clearly well over the age of 18. He said he had to put my date of birth into the device, and that he couldn't deliver the package without it.

I offered to show my driving licence but restated that I wasn't happy to have my Date of Birth recorded in the device. I asked what Amazon use the data for and he couldn't tell me, but said someone had been fired for not collecting this information on a delivery.

In the end my husband signed for it, gave his date of birth and is going to contact Amazon to find out more.

WIBU to refuse to sign it, and is this now standard practice?

Zombie thread, but still no real excuse for Amazon asking for yet more personal data.

Technonan · 02/09/2020 11:55

If you'd shown his your driving licence, that would have given him your date of birth. Seems like a mountain out of a molehill.

rosesandcashmere · 02/09/2020 12:02

I couldn't get upset over this. Just give him your date or birth

Couchbettato · 02/09/2020 12:03

Oh fgs, it's not stored against your account. Any one who answers the door, Amazon account or not, when ordering alcohol would have to give their DOB.

Just like you would with Royal Mail if you ordered alcohol through them, or through Uber Eats if you order alcohol with your food.

Amazon have got a huge presence so obviously they have to be thorough because it's their reputation on the line when kids order next day delivery for bloody house parties.

alfrew · 02/09/2020 12:04

Love the typo, telling people not to get on their 'huge horses'.

Made my day.

No they need evidence that you are over 18.

I've yet to have anyone at the door who could tell me what was going to happen to the data they were collecting via the handset.

I've increasingly noticed delivery people being asked to take photographs of the customer which I also decline.

PonfusedCarent · 02/09/2020 12:14

Just give them a fake one if you must. The Amazon driver knew mine was fake when I gave it to him but he's done his job and could see I was over age.

PattyPan · 02/09/2020 12:23

A Sainsburys delivery man once asked for my ID because I’d ordered matches... which aren’t even age restricted.
When asked online I usually give a fake DOB e.g. 1st January 1980. I also give a fake phone number (01234567890) if it’s a company I suspect will try to phone when I don’t want them to (e.g. getting an online quote for something). I only give my real DOB or phone number if there’s a legitimate reason for them to need it.

@HairyFloppins
Christ just give him your date of birth. Why do people have to make things so difficult

Because they are precious and looking for something to be outraged about. Poor Amazon delivery guy, just trying to do his job Hmm OP, may I suggest that you get a grip, this is so petty and really not worth getting pissed off about Confused

amusedbush · 02/09/2020 12:40

I know this is a zombie thread but I was asked for ID by an Amazon driver last week. I showed him my driving licence and then I watched him open the calculator on his phone to work out that I'm 30 Grin

mrsBtheparker · 02/09/2020 12:45

If they didn't ask and an under-18 got their hands on restricted goods, alcohol, knives etc no doubt the same people who are criticising Amazon would be here, criticising Amazon!

Jaxhog · 02/09/2020 12:47

Does anyone else think it odd that a 53-year-old woman is being asked for id? I also wouldn't give my dob if I didn't have to. It could be the first step towards id theft. This is not as rare as many people think.

midlifecrash · 02/09/2020 12:52

Recording and keeping your DOB when not needed is breach of GDPR. AS pp have said they only need to confirm proof of age checked

CatSmith · 02/09/2020 12:54

This ⬆️⬆️⬆️ With bells on. What on earth do you think amazon are going to do with this secret piece of highly protected information?

ekidmxcl · 02/09/2020 12:54

When I am unnecessarily asked for my DOB, I amend the year by one (irrelevant as I’m in 40s) and also amend the day by one.

OLGADEEPOLGA · 02/09/2020 12:55

OMG how much do you think the Amazon delivery chap cares? Just give him your date of birth (as he will need to verify that you are over 18) and get on with your life. FFS. This is beyond ridiculous.

pussycatinboots · 02/09/2020 12:58

I've been asked for mine - I just made one up!🤷🏻‍♀️

Devlesko · 02/09/2020 13:06

Too much time on your hands, why not just give your dob.
He would have had to make it up, otherwise or be sacked.

Devlesko · 02/09/2020 13:07

Argh, must read the posting date
ZOMBIE

I8toys · 02/09/2020 13:10

It always happens - don't see the problem. Just spin that wheel.

OrigamiOwl · 02/09/2020 13:17

I've previously done Amazon deliveries. It's app/smart phone based but the driver cannot override the fill in a date of birth screen for age-restricted products.
If someone wouldn't give a date of birth (even a fake one, we don't care) we cannot hand over the parcel or if we did we'd be sacked.
I gave up delivering, for a minimum wage job it was an extraordinary amount of hassle. I did it as a second job and was lucky enough I didn't need to rely on the money.
Between rude customers, places with no house names or numbers, being given routes an hour's drive away (you only get paid for the deliveries, no traveling time) I realised it wasn't worth it. I realised with the no traveling time issue I was making well under the minimum wage.
Spare a thought for your delivery driver, they aren't doing this to deliberately inconvenience you.

MadisonAvenue · 02/09/2020 13:21

I had an Amazon driver want to see ID to prove I was over 18 when I took in a delivery of alcohol for my son a few weeks ago.
I’m 51.
I don’t have a driving licence and he had to wait while I went two floors upstairs and emptied out a cupboard to get to the box where I keep our passports for safe keeping.

I’d actually picked the parcel up off the doorstep before he asked for ID and he told me that if I didn’t put it down he’d call the police.

lotsolove · 02/09/2020 13:22

Why would providing a DOB to Amazon be a problem when you had already volunteered your name, address and BANK DETAILS? If you trust them to hold this personal data responsibly, surely you can trust them with your DOB?

As your under no obligation to use Amazon it might be time to shops elsewhere.

Regularsizedrudy · 02/09/2020 13:22

I don’t know how you have the time or energy to give a shit about this

lillylemons · 02/09/2020 13:27

Asda driver asked for my dob the last time we had alcohol in the delivery. Amazon driver has also asked when I ordered garden shears.
