to not give the Amazon delivery driver my date of birth?

Evalina · 11/10/2019 13:48

Amazon just delivered a couple of packages including one for my husband which had alcohol in it. The delivery driver asked me for my date of birth to enter into his handheld device.

I wasn't happy to give it, and said that I was 53 so clearly well over the age of 18. He said he had to put my date of birth into the device, and that he couldn't deliver the package without it.

I offered to show my driving licence but restated that I wasn't happy to have my Date of Birth recorded in the device. I asked what Amazon use the data for and he couldn't tell me, but said someone had been fired for not collecting this information on a delivery.

In the end my husband signed for it, gave his date of birth and is going to contact Amazon to find out more.

WIBU to refuse to sign it, and is this now standard practice?

People like you really annoy me, sorry. This guy is working in difficult times. Maybe someone who had another job and doing this to bring some food for his family. He's been told he has to asked date of birth or could get in trouble. He is in a hurry to deliver all his parcels, but then he's got to deal with people giving him grief just over giving a date of birth.

FGS, why would you care? I bet if he'd say it was for a chance in ten 10 to win a million pounds you'd no problem telling him.

Wake up! There are much bigger issues at the moment than to worry about giving your dob so your oh can enjoy his drink or whatever it was.

zigaziga · 28/03/2020 12:59

Oh yay let’s make life even harder for the poor delivery guy.

Just give your DOB.

DameXanaduBramble · 28/03/2020 13:06

Poor Amazon guy.

Mlou32 · 28/03/2020 13:08

My goodness. Why make someone's life difficult? People are having a hard enough time as it is.

NotSorry · 28/03/2020 13:10

Zombie thread everyone

Axa101 · 02/09/2020 10:39

Did you get to know if he had the right to know and did anything scary happend.

Same
Thing happend to me
But for razors.

mrpumblechook · 02/09/2020 10:56

Basically Amazone don't trust their drivers and want proof that they have checked. I was unable to find proof quickly to prove I was over 18 (I am in my 50s so you would think my face proves it) and had to get DD to show hers. It puts me off buying from them.

Chloemol · 02/09/2020 11:09

I just give a date. And now you know do t order anything from a,Avon that requires age proof

DGRossetti · 02/09/2020 11:11

The bank also hold my pin number, but I don't give that to them over the phone

The bank don't hold your PIN. They hold a hash of it which is not the same thing at all.

(They also clearly state to never give your PIN to anyone on the phone too, but that's a separate issue).

You know something ? Rather that making a big scene about trying to hold a poor Amazon driver to account for rules beyond their control, it's a fucking shame more people in this country didn't take a similar approach to holding the shitshow of of a government we have to account for things that are most assuredly in their control.

Or is it just easier to punch down than up ?

eaglejulesk · 02/09/2020 11:11

Christ just give him your date of birth. Why do people have to make things so difficult.

God knows - pathetic isn't it?

zingally · 02/09/2020 11:13

This wasn't the drivers fault.

I really get annoyed with people who make things difficult for the person at the bottom of the totem pole, like the delivery driver, the waiter, the check-out person. My mum does this sometimes, and it drives me bonkers.

If you cared that much, make up a fake one! If your real birthday is 3rd March '63, tell him it's 2nd February '63! The driver doesn't care, he's just "ticking a box".

... But surely if you have an account with Amazon, they already have your date of birth?

unchienandalusia · 02/09/2020 11:14

This thread would probably be pissed off to have to show ID too as it's BLOODY ANCIENT!

zingally · 02/09/2020 11:17

Another example of punching down, because it's easier than punching up.

People who get arsey over stuff like this need to check their privilege.

seayork2020 · 02/09/2020 11:17

I figure they ask because it is part of their job rather than having read '1001 ways to annoy customers'

fairydustandpixies · 02/09/2020 11:17

Why is this a thing? Does it really matter? My postman asks for my date of birth and ID every time he delivers something from Amazon that has an age restriction on it. It's become a joke now and we both laugh especially as he pretends not to believe I'm 49! Why is everyone so precious about their age?? These people are just doing their job which requires them to ask, why get all wound up about it?!

fairydustandpixies · 02/09/2020 11:19

HA!!! @unchienandalusia - you're right!! Just noticed that it's a zombie thread... GrinBlushGrin

MyOwnSummer · 02/09/2020 11:28

YABVVVVVU - it is the law, he has to do it (source - I have worked for a delivery company and can confirm this is absolutely a thing, we have IT systems designed to deal with this issue and they are designed according to the specification we are required to follow by law). He has no choice but to follow the instructions he is given, or refuse to give you the product. He would most likely be fired if he failed to follow procedure.

If you don't want the faff or like stating your age out loud, buy your age restricted products in a shop.

On another note, age is nothing to be embarrassed about, it is just what you are. The driver won't give a toss either, as long as you are over 18!

Tootletum · 02/09/2020 11:36

I agree with you and would definitely take it up with amazon. Given all the fraud around I would not want some random person to have my name, address and dob. They don't need it as pp have said he should just be able to tick that he's seen proof, not input the data.

81Byerley · 02/09/2020 11:38

To be honest, I don't understand what the problem is with giving your date of birth.

Redcups64 · 02/09/2020 11:40

If you don’t like it then don’t order things like that from amazon!

You don’t need to be on your Hugh horse about it, the driver propbably doesn’t give a rats arse about your date of birth, but needs to put something into his device...don’t know why this is such a big deal for you, next time just say 1st April 2000

Doyoumind · 02/09/2020 11:41

Why has this zombie been resurrected twice?

SirGawain · 02/09/2020 11:48

You are being very very unreasonable! The guy is just doing his job, cut him some slack!!

SirGawain · 02/09/2020 11:48

Oh dear a Zombie thread!!

GabsAlot · 02/09/2020 11:49

im sure its in the terms for restricted items

GabsAlot · 02/09/2020 11:50
