to not give the Amazon delivery driver my date of birth?

Evalina · 11/10/2019 13:48

Amazon just delivered a couple of packages including one for my husband which had alcohol in it. The delivery driver asked me for my date of birth to enter into his handheld device.

I wasn't happy to give it, and said that I was 53 so clearly well over the age of 18. He said he had to put my date of birth into the device, and that he couldn't deliver the package without it.

I offered to show my driving licence but restated that I wasn't happy to have my Date of Birth recorded in the device. I asked what Amazon use the data for and he couldn't tell me, but said someone had been fired for not collecting this information on a delivery.

In the end my husband signed for it, gave his date of birth and is going to contact Amazon to find out more.

WIBU to refuse to sign it, and is this now standard practice?

We must input the DOB off the ID so you cannot make one up

Evalina · 11/10/2019 14:40

@bellinisurge - exactly - it's the potential for fraud. He asked for my driving licence, so giving a fake DOB was not an option.

It is to record that the staff are actually asking for ID, the till calculates their age and keeps a record that we are doing our jobs and IDing people. The date of birth isn't recorded, just the fact that we ID'd them. The poor guy was only doing his job.

3ismylot · 11/10/2019 14:43

This is an official email from them.....

Hello,

We noticed that you delivered your first Age Verified Delivery within the past week. This delivery contained an age-restricted item such as alcohol, a knife, spray paint or e-cigarette.

Amazon conducts regular mystery shopper audits to ensure all delivery partners follow the Age Verified Deliveries process for age-restricted deliveries. Failing to follow the process may affect your eligibility for the Amazon Flex programme.

How to make an Age Verified Delivery:

• When delivering an Age Verified package you must check the customer’s ID.
o Even if the customer looks over 18, always ask for ID.
o Check that the ID matches the person receiving the delivery and enter the recipient’s date of birth into the app.
• Ask for a signature. All age verified deliveries must be signed for, regardless the recipient’s age. Never sign on behalf of the customer.
• Do not leave the item unattended or with a neighbour, even if the customer has provided instructions to do so.• Do not take photos of customer's ID.
• The process is the exact same when delivering to a building receptionist, whether that be a commercial building or an apartment complex with a concierge. You will need to ask the receptionist or concierge to provide a valid ID, showing they are aged 18 or over. If the receptionist is not able to provide this, do not deliver the package and return it back to the pick-up location.
• You can deliver to someone other than the customer as long as the recipient is located at the delivery address, they are 18 or over and you have verified their ID. If any of these steps cannot be completed, or if the recipient cannot provide ID, the item must not be delivered and must be returned to the delivery station.

• Do not take photos of customer's ID.

Acceptable types of ID: A government issued ID card, licence or passport are all acceptable forms of ID. Be sure to check the photograph on the ID to ensure it matches the recipient. Then, when you enter the date of birth into the app, it will tell you if the recipient is aged 18 or over and if you can complete the delivery. Note, photos or photocopies of an ID are not acceptable, physical ID must be shown

If any of these steps cannot be completed, or if the recipient cannot provide ID, the item must not be delivered and must be returned to the delivery station.

Additional information is available in the ‘Making an Age Verified Delivery’ video.

Happy delivering!

The Amazon Flex Team

@DarlingNikita

The bank also hold my pin number, but I don't give that to them over the phone. They have that data, so do not need to ask for it again.

I didn't order the package, DH did, so it's his DOB they have associated to that order, not mine.

I do care though, and giving out your date of birth isn't a non-issue either

But amazon already have your DOB when you regiatered so what is the issue?!

Sobeyondthehills · 11/10/2019 14:45

Amazon recently got into a lot of trouble on Watchdog, so I assume this could be in response to that

Mrsthomasshelby1 · 11/10/2019 14:45

Sorry crosspost

CasparBloomberg · 11/10/2019 14:46

@3ismylot then it feels to me there is something really wrong as Amazon are requiring delivery drivers to store the personal information of someone who potentially has no relationship or contract with Amazon, on their system without providing information on how that data is used, stored or how long it is kept or how they can get it removed.

Hmmm... definitely doesn’t feel right under GDPR.

3ismylot · 11/10/2019 14:46

@Evalina you are perfectly in your right not to show your ID it just means that you cannot accept the parcel

DarlingNikita · 11/10/2019 14:48

I see, OP; thank you.

I agree with others that surely it's enough for the driver to tick a box saying they've seen ID, and for you to sign to say you are over 18.

The drivers themselves do not store any customer information once it is uploaded to the app we never see it again. Even when we call a customer it is done through the app so we don't see their info and they don't see ours.
We are just doing our jobs at the end of the day

Evalina · 11/10/2019 14:49

I had no problem with showing my ID as per their terms and conditions. The issue is why my personal data has to be captured and what they plan to do with it.

OP posts:
ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 11/10/2019 14:51

They have to.

No they don't have to, they tell you they do. They T&C says you shave to show it.

bellinisurge · 11/10/2019 14:52

When you are buying booze from Sainsbury's, you might be asked to show your driving license as proof of age but the cashier doesn't take down your details on your license.

Whatisthisfuckery · 11/10/2019 14:53

I had a very surly amazon deliver man demanding ID at the door the other day. I’d ordered some vape coils, so not age controlled themselves, but potentially for use with nicotine. It’s a bit daft really because I’m in my late 30s and don’t look under 25 but I suppose amazon need to cover their arses. If an under aged person does get hold of a nicotine or alcohol product and someone complains then a delivery driver is going to get their arse tanned.

Mrsthomasshelby1 · 11/10/2019 14:53

Not everything is a conspiracy. Amazon don't plan on doing anything with it that they won't have already done with your DOB when you registered. Its captured to try to prove the driver is asking for ID correctly.

Evalina · 11/10/2019 14:54

@HotChocolateLover

So if Amazon tell their delivery drivers that they need your pin number you'd be happy to give them that?

OP posts:
19lottie82 · 11/10/2019 14:54

This is a requirement for the drivers when delivering age restricted products. You don’t have to give it, but you won’t get your goods.

AmIThough · 11/10/2019 14:55

They won't so anything with it unless DH phones and said "you delivered the parcel to my 12 year old son and he drank my whiskeys - he's underage and I'm reporting you"

Then they'd say "our driver delivered to @Evalina and we have a DOB recorded which shows driver confirmed she is over 18".

Same as they take your name and don't use it unless someone complains about the delivery

Evalina · 11/10/2019 14:56

Well interestingly we've just had a call with Amazon who claim that their delivery drivers are not required to take down Date of Birth. We said that it was very clearly an app on the driver's handheld device and that DH also was asked to give his name too.

They are investigating..

OP posts:
HotChocolateLover · 11/10/2019 14:57

@evalina They wouldn’t require that to buy alcohol, so yes I would say no. However, they (and the government) refuse alcohol sales to minors so DOB is relevant to allow the sale. I dislike the policy as much as you do but it’s the big corporations that you need to take it up with sadly.

3ismylot · 11/10/2019 14:57

Trust me when we are delivering upto 48 parcels in a 4-hour slot with a starting point nearly an hour from the depot in the dark and rain we would much prefer not to have to waste time looking at your ID or recording your DOB either, what amazon do with your data is covered under their privacy policy which you agree to at the time of purchase. If you do not agree with having your data collected then simply do not accept the delivery on behalf of someone else and there will be no problem
