We are supposed to be going away for the weekend tomorrow with our DC’s (primary aged). We have a 180 mile trip at 10am tomorrow. He told me he was going out for a meal and a few drinks for his friends birthday - which is fine - I waved them off at 7 this evening. It’s now approaching 1am and he isn’t home - he has decided to drink until the pubs close. He doesn’t go out often with friends , yet when he does he always takes it too far (drinks wise) - as in coming home very very drunk.

He will be home shortly and he will most likely just collapse on the sofa - but my point is he will still be over the limit tomorrow which isn’t safe for anyone. I’m furious as we are supposed to be going away with extended family also in the morning.

Please tell me how to handle this situation.

@ContessaLovesTheSunshine what breathalyser did you get & is it reusable? I'd love to be able to check. Honestly I could be slightly over the limit after a bottle of wine some mornings

ContessaLovesTheSunshine · 11/10/2019 22:24

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Police-Breath-Alcohol-Tester-Self-Digital-Analyzer-Detector-Breathalyser-UK-Sell/122955102996?epid=9014216530&hash=item1ca0b1fb14:g:zIAAAOSwYvNcx7Qn

It's somewhat trigger happy (i.e. Goes from safe to dangerous without much in between) but is reusable and, we think, a useful tool.

It was actually instrumental in getting DH to realise he was drinking far too much, but that's another thread....

timshelthechoice · 11/10/2019 22:31

There can be 10 units in a bottle of wine and you're not sure if you're not over the limit the next morning Hmm?

mum11970 · 11/10/2019 22:52

I'm surprised he could stand after seven pints + Budweiser.

Get out of it, even I could stand after 7 pints over 6 hours and a meal, never mind my husband. I’m not saying I’d wouldn’t be drunk but I certainly wouldn’t be falling over.

Is it really a lot? I don't consider myself a binge drinker but I can easily do that when just sitting at a pub with a friend. I'd feel drunk but definately not falling over.

In this particular case he shouldn't have drank that much. Also op shouldn't have tried to lock him out.

Rachelover60 · 12/10/2019 04:02

I suppose so if he was having a meal that took six hours. I admit to being a light weight when it comes to booze though. Men can usually take more drink than women. Seven pints is till quite a lot though.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 12/10/2019 07:13

You can also get units called interlocks, which test your breath alcohol, and if it's over the limit they lock the ignition on the car, preventing you from driving. Usually they will be locked for 30 minutes, then you can re-test and if you're below the limit, you can start the car - if not, then it will lock for a further 30 minutes.

SpecialKRocks223 · 12/10/2019 07:33

For the record - it doesn't matter how much coffee or water he drinks, it doesn't matter if he drinks 15 gallons of it

If he's over the limit he's over the limit.

QueenoftheDay · 12/10/2019 10:21

I reckon there are loads of people driving over the limit on their way to work. Loads.

Yes. I would hope that myth would have been dispelled by now but from this thread, evidently not. Drinking water will help counteract the dehydration that comes from drinking too much alcohol, but it won't make you sober.

I reckon there are loads of people driving over the limit on their way to work. Loads.

This thread has certainly been an eye-opener for me. It does explain a lot of the behaviour I see on the roads, especially on Sat/ Sun/ Monday mornings. So many people must either be over the limit and/ or hungover.

Did Bluntness ever come back and explain how she knew so much more than the NHS calculator and knew the OP's DH would be safe to drive?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/10/2019 11:29

To the person saying 15 units = 15 hours from when he started drinking. Couple of points - it takes time for the alcohol to be absorbed and it has to be absorbed before it can be metabolised. There was a Horizon programme with the Van Tulleken brothers (identical twin Drs) where they looked at binge drinking v daily drinking. One thing that came out was how much the blood alcohol level continued to rise for several hours after he had finished the binge (it got close to toxic levels).
The binge was 21 units - the OP’s DH with 7 pints and a bottle of Bud won’t be that far off 21 units.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/10/2019 11:30

Meant to add
We don’t know what beer the OP’s DH was drinking, some beers are 3 units a pint.

timshelthechoice · 12/10/2019 11:40

It's a common way of getting a DUI. And again, loads of ignorance about sleep, coffee and water making you sober. Only time does this as that's what allows your body to absorb and metabolise alcohol. A lady on here just a week or so ago also thought she was capable the next morning, was drunk, got banned and fined but thankfully no one got hurt.

A good point someone made that you'd never dream of driving the school run after a boozy lunch (well, some do!) but so many believe a few hours kip makes it fine.

Really wish the limit would be lowered so there's no grey area for people.

Ninkaninus · 12/10/2019 11:57

I don’t drink even one drink and then drive, and I would never drive the morning after a fairly heavy drinking session. I’m aghast at the ignorance and lack of understanding displayed on this thread, and frankly, quite a bit more nervous about other drivers on the road than I used to be!

Weenurse · 13/10/2019 01:25

Just waiting to see hoe the trip went
