Not had Ben & Jerry’s for months, treated myself to the heavenly peanut butter cup flavour this evening. All good? Nope it tasted really really bad. And guess what it’s full of now ?

Not just palm oil but coconut oil too!

Why???

Can’t believe they are charging the prices they do for ice cream that’s now pretty much the same as the value branded stuff.

I miss the days before food was full of shite!!

AIBU??

What’s wrong with coconut oil?

SleepyKat · 04/10/2019 19:10

No idea what coconut oil tastes like in ice cream but palm oil is rank in chocolate. Cheap, greasy stuff.

I’ve just bought some b&b peanut butter cup so am sad about this.

Drpeppered · 04/10/2019 19:12

Water, CREAM (20%), sugar, condensed skimmed MILK, PEANUT, vegetable oils (coconut oil, rapeseed oil, SOYBEAN oil), free range EGG yolk, PEANUT flour, fat reduced cocoa powder, skimmed MILK powder, whole MILK powder, salt, emulsifier (SOY lecithin), natural vanilla flavouring, stabilisers (guar gum, carrageenan). May contain gluten. Sugar, cocoa, vanilla

Am I being thick because I can’t see palm oil in the list of ingredients? I know it sometimes goes by other names

IceniSky · 04/10/2019 19:12

I just eat Mackies now.

Twillow · 04/10/2019 19:12

Palm oil is terrible stuff, destroying the ecosystem where it's grown.

which1 · 04/10/2019 19:13

Maybe you just picked a disappointing flavour, no?

I can recommend Choc Fudge Brownie, Half Baked, and Phish Food.

Greatnorthwoods · 04/10/2019 19:15

I have been boycotting B&J ever since Jerry said all US police officers should be shot

MitziK · 04/10/2019 19:22

Considering the price, I'd go without for a bit and then start making my own with an icecream maker. No cheap shit in homemade icecream unless you choose to put it there.

Weedsnseeds1 · 04/10/2019 19:24

It's owned but Unilever now. That's why.

theconstantinoplegardener · 04/10/2019 19:26

Judes ice cream is nice, and free of palm and coconut oil (well, the variety that is in my deep freeze at the moment is anyway). Green and Black's is great too. Haagen Dazs do Peanut Butter Crunch ice cream, which you might like. It does contain a bit of coconut oil, but it's the eighth ingredient of nine, so not very much. No palm oil.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 04/10/2019 19:28

I miss the days before food was full of shite!!

YABU to say this when you bought a flavour of ice cream that has to be heavily processed to work at all. The days before food was full of shite, ice cream came in one flavour and you had to buy it from an ice cream van or cafe because houses didn't have freezers to keep it in and Iceland wasn't invented yet either. Try making your own from scratch if you want to have more control over the ingredients. There's so many recipes online.

CottonSock · 04/10/2019 19:30

Joe's ice cream peanut butter is heavenly

Deathraystare · 04/10/2019 19:31

I don't like any of the flavours. In my nearest supermarket - a tiny Sainsbury's it only sells those chocolate cookie/brownie type things. Yuck.

DontCallMeShitley · 04/10/2019 19:32

I have never bought Ben & Jerrys because it used to contain palm oil (not sure which flavours) plus all the other crap listed above. Carageenan is apparently carcinogenic and guar gum and soya cause bloating. Proper ice cream has not need for these thickeners.

Carte D'Or is also crap.

middlemuddle · 04/10/2019 19:34

I've had two incidents lately of Cookie Dough tasting very weird like it'd been defrosted and refrozen. So I melted it in the microwave slightly and it was ok haha. I'm not sure if that was a B&J change or if it had been defrosted by accident now...

My DH (gadget fiend) bought a very expensive ice cream machine 25 years ago.

I was furious at the time but have forgiven him now as it has been used constantly, it makes the most delicious ice cream.

BUT it will spoil you as no other ice cream can possibly come up to the standard of bespoke ice cream.

MissConductUS · 04/10/2019 19:39

All of the flavors I eat in the US have coconut oil, not palm oil. I've had to cut back as I've discovered that the guar gum doesn't agree with me.

cornstarch · 04/10/2019 19:47

Make your own. It's so easy and ice cream makers aren't very expensive

SnottyLittleMango · 04/10/2019 19:52

@middlemuddle I had the same with the Cookie Dough last week, it was really grainy and a bit greasy. At least I know to avoid it now...

LaserShark · 04/10/2019 19:53

I had some Toblerone today. It used to be my favourite thing. Today I kept eating it waiting for the flavour - what the fuck has happened and why? What chocolate is still decent now?

Rudeabaga · 04/10/2019 19:57

I love coconut but coconut oil is rank. Try Judes or Mackies

BustedDreams · 04/10/2019 20:00

Make your own. So easy. Just cream, sugar and vanilla extract. Delish.

DontLettuceBrexitLettuceRomain · 04/10/2019 20:01

It's owned but Unilever now. That's why

It's been owned by Unilever for almost 20years...
