Not had Ben & Jerry’s for months, treated myself to the heavenly peanut butter cup flavour this evening. All good? Nope it tasted really really bad. And guess what it’s full of now ?

Not just palm oil but coconut oil too!

Why???

Can’t believe they are charging the prices they do for ice cream that’s now pretty much the same as the value branded stuff.

I miss the days before food was full of shite!!

AIBU??

The recession screwed so many good products. People couldn't afford them any more, so the manufacturers did anything to cut costs and maintain revenues and they brands survived in this adulterated form

This is the issue, food is much cheaper than it should be. As a result it is also worse quality than it should be.
We have an ice cream maker.

managedmis · 05/10/2019 01:41

Does it contain palm oil or not?

What should it contain?

Tartyflette · 05/10/2019 01:49

I thought proper home-made ice cream has an egg-custard base and not just cream? I've tried making it with condensed milk and whipped cream and it's ok but it's not the real deal. It melts very quickly. (The best one is Nigella's espresso ice cream which is seriously good, for coffee lovers anyway)
I used to have an old fashioned ice cream machine that had an inner and outer section with a gap between the two that you filled with ice and salt, you loaded the cream mixture into the inner container then switched it on to churn and you had a lovely soft ice cream about half an hour later. You needed loads of ice though. About six trays worth.
As for the best artisan ice cream, you can't beat Roskillys, in deepest Cornwall, especially with a large scoop of their clotted cream on top.

YANBU, coconut oil is such a saturated fat it's practically lard Sad

Didkdt · 05/10/2019 02:28

Ben and Jerry have a recipe book. Amazon have icecream making machines
Problem solved

Ladybirdbookworm · 05/10/2019 02:42

Well strangely I had a taste of Hersheys chocolate when I was I the USA last month and it left a taste in my mouth like vomit . Now this might be totally untrue but my daughter said that she was told it has an ingredient that can replicate the taste of sick ............all I can say is it was like having reflux in my mouth ....
I'll just leave that there ....your welcome

Hopoindown31 · 05/10/2019 02:45

It's been Unilever mass produced crap since 2000 anyway.

pumkinspicetime · 05/10/2019 03:00

Hershey's taste is condensed milk powder that gives it the odd flavor.

BritWifeinUSA · 05/10/2019 04:54

I’m allergic to coconut to the point where even a small taste of ice cream made with coconut oil has my lips swelling, face burning, throat closing... horrible reaction. The more chocolates and ice cream that have coconut oil in them, the fewer choices I have. Should be good for weight loss anyway.

LandaB · 05/10/2019 07:59

I treated myself to Hagen Daz Pralines and Cream the other day. It used to be my favourite so creamy and caramely and gooey with so many pralines. Not any more, flavour seems to have totally changed, without comparing the ingredients it seems bland, not as sweet and lacks the amount of caramel sauce that used to run through it.Hagen Daz Salted Caramel is now my go to ice cream.

PancakeAndKeith · 05/10/2019 09:04

The whipped cream and condensed milk recipe is ok but it’s not real ice cream.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 05/10/2019 09:51

Hello all,

Interesting as i assumed the nasty aftertastes was palm and coconut oil, I have now checked the ingredients and it lists vegetable oils (coconut, rapeseed and soybean) so they’ve replaced palm oil with those, I think it’s good they are taking palm oil out, but replacing it with other oils isn’t the answer!

Bluergh!

Thanks for all the ice cream brands recommendations- I have had mackies in the past and it is nice, will go back to that I think, and try Kelly’s too.

If I get chance to try and of the homemade recipes out I will report back!

Sorry, posted too soon!

Also the wider discussion about mass produced food is very interesting, and I agree that we are better off with quality rather than quantity

Reallybadidea · 05/10/2019 09:57

Personally I don't think that the ingredients for Kelly's ice cream are any better: www.kellysofcornwall.co.uk/product/kellys-dairy-cornish-vanilla/

No coconut oil, but still nothing like homemade.

Oldraver · 05/10/2019 10:02

When did they get rid of Chery Garcia .?

It was in my cinema earlier in the year

Whysshedoingit · 05/10/2019 10:31

Anyone who has dumped Cadbury's - try their new 30% less sugar Dairy Milk! Omg! It's like the Dairy Milk of the 80s & 90s! So so nice

LittleAndOften · 05/10/2019 10:35

I've had two incidents lately of Cookie Dough tasting very weird like it'd been defrosted and refrozen

Same! Bought some last week it was really poor quality and a funny texture. They also used to have proper pieces of cookie dough, this was like it had all been mixed in.

viques · 05/10/2019 11:57

Talking of ice cream makers... I went to a science of food thing at the university of London a couple of years ago and we made icecream. It wasn't wonderful, but it was fun and you could add flavours.

You need a large. Zippy bag and a small zippy bag. Put double cream in the small zippy bag and zip. In the large zippy bag put crushed ice, salt and the small zippy bag. Zip the large bag. Massage the contents with your hands and the cream will freeze. The science is the salt makes the ice colder (no I don't remember why). It's quite fun to do with kids.even Ben aand Jerry had to start small.

We also did things with chocolate and frozen nitrogen, you know how frozen chocolate tastes weird? It's because when it's frozen its choc lately molecules are rearranged from vertical to horizontal -don't quote me because I might have misheard that bit because I was overexcited at the nitrogen canister- it was a good night. There were cocktails but I can't remember the science bit for them.

HotChocolateLover · 05/10/2019 11:58

Don’t buy it if you don’t like it.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 05/10/2019 14:47

Who pissed on your chips HotChocolateLover?

OP posts:
BlackCatSleeping · 05/10/2019 14:56

Well, it's a fair point? You don't like the taste of Ben & Jerry's. So, surely the answer is to buy a different brand. It's not like there aren't loads to choose from. I love B&J's.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 05/10/2019 15:06

In genuinely baffled by the snippy responses here by the way.

Who knew that not liking the new recipe of something could cause such offence in others!

OP posts:
BlackCatSleeping · 05/10/2019 15:26

But, is it a new recipe? You said it contained palm oil and it doesn't. I'm confused whether this is actually true or you're just mistaken.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 05/10/2019 15:47

As I pointed out earlier it contains coconut oil, rapeseed oil, and soybean oil.

This is definitely new. It tastes very different. And I think it’s a bit shit that food manufacturers bulk out there product with cheap fillers.

Why are you so bothered about the fact I want to talk about what’s in ice cream?

OP posts:
BlackCatSleeping · 05/10/2019 15:58

I don't care. I just don't believe that the recipe has changed. So, it seems a pointless thread. 🤷‍♀️

But, if you're having fun. Go ahead.
