To ask how you all feel about mixed sex loos and wards?

Just in the past day or so there have been discussions on social media about the new NHS guidelines that allows patients to choose which sexed ward they feel most comfortable in reality making wards mixed sex. And today the Old Vic is also following the recent trend to make its loos mixed sex - mixed sex with urinals, mixed sex with with stalls and gender neutral loos. Just wondering how folk feel about the end of single sex wards and loos for mixed sex provision.

I went to a bar last week that had mixed sex toilets, all cubicles with sink, dryer etc. Sounds fine in principle, but the stink of piss from the one I went in was overwhelming. I understand men’s piss has a stronger smell than women’s, and of course they’re not always careful where it ends up when drunk.

A bar near me has one toilet. Last time I was in there a guy went in, his mate stood just outside in the bar and they continued their conversation while he had a piss in full view of the bar! He wasn’t doing it to be a dick, but the reality is that many men don’t close the door in single sex toilets, and so are likely to forget in mixed sex loos.

As for mixed sex wards, when this blows up (as it will) the government will understand what the majority of people want and, with any luck, act on it.

Women can harass and follow other women as much as men can. I've been harassed by both genders on nights out.

Well if you don’t know that the correct terminology is sex, i really hope you’re joking by using ‘nurse’ in your ‘name’. You must be the most unlucky person on the planet, if you’ve been harassed equally by both ‘sexes’. Hmm

Theendofmyrope · 03/10/2019 19:34

The trans woke bullshit express is steaming on

Quellium · 03/10/2019 19:40

Really dislike the idea of both.

GenderfreeJoe · 03/10/2019 19:46

No.

user1497207191 · 03/10/2019 19:49

I would be uncomfortable with mixed sex toilets and wards.

So where do transitioning, gender free, or whatever other type of "inbetween" or undecided people go.

Now that gender is flexible, mixed sex toilets and wards are inevitable.

ForestDweller27 · 03/10/2019 19:51

I’m reading this and wondering how many people realise mixed sex loos are just cubicles around a sink area. Many schools have them and they are no issue.

AnyMinuteNow · 03/10/2019 19:57

Women can harass and follow other women as much as men can. No they can't, bio lesson, the female sex doesn't have a penis.

Nope, never ever happened, sexually assaulted by another woman in a toilet.

both genders

I am not interested in genders, they are harmful socially constructed stereotypes, and don't really mean much any more.

But sex differences, yes, very much noteworthy, and to not break equality laws is vital.

Many are throwing equality law out of the window, on their own heads be it.

RTFT

Wrong.

It is a huge issue in schools for girls, as is well documented and evidenced.

Also this is not legal in primary schools where toilets for male and female children are compulsory.

Whatwouldbigfatfannydo · 03/10/2019 20:16

@user1497207191

Those folk go where their sex dictates. Biological men will always be just that. It really isn't hard to grasp, especially after 7 pages of discussion about this very thing.

Now that gender is flexible, mixed sex toilets and wards are inevitable.

Gender and sex are NOT the same thing.

cwg1 · 03/10/2019 20:20

user I don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable. What concerns me is that one group is being prioritised above all others and anyone trying to express their concerns is dismissed as a bigot.

Now that gender is flexible I can only say that there seems to me to be a very strange conflation of what used to be called personality with very stereotypical ideas about biological sex and I wish it would stop.

TrainspottingWelsh · 03/10/2019 20:37

Women harass just as much as men, what complete and utter bollocks. Let me guess, the next bullshit line is that lots of women feel more comfortable when they're at their most vulnerable with other random men around, rather than women.

MadameGazelleIsMyHomegirl · 03/10/2019 20:51

It’s a big fat no from me. I do not want men, or biological men who have now decided they are ‘women’, in the same toilets, wards, women’s refuges, prisons, changing rooms and wherever else there are safe spaces for women.
No matter what you think, you CANNOT change sex. You can live as the opposite sex but you can’t change biology.

I was referring to gender. I didn't stop to ask if the woman harassing me if she was trans or not and certainly didn't check her genitals. I couldn't tell you the persons sex just the gender they presented as. We were in a very trans and LGBT+ friendly place.

I also said women CAN harass as much as men [CAN harass]. I'm sure someone who knows the difference between gender and sex can understand the difference between can and does.

As it is I've been harassed by men and women at work as well.

But please attack my profession because you have a differing view on the world. Do you feel better for it?

So women cannot harass people because they don't have a penis? 🤨 wut?

No one said they were sexually assaulted by a woman in a toilet. I said I was harassed.

Harassment, sexual assault, rape etc are different things.

Men can be harassed and even sexually assaulted by women. Shocking I know but it does happen.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/10/2019 21:07

SherbetSaucer so because I'm 'the average person' I'm supposed to be ok with sharing a hospital ward with men? I would rather discharge myself than be in a short staffed hospital ward with some bloke when I'm sick and vulnerable.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 03/10/2019 21:10

People can’t change sex and gender is a load of made up misogynistic wank that claims that you need to ‘feel like’ your sex or the opposite sex, then behave in a stereotypical manner/dress in a stereotypical way to represent and belong to that sex. Btw, I’m not attacking OUR profession (25yrs of working in neurology), I’m disappointed that you’re actually trying to imply that women harass women to the same level that men do. Since 98% of violent and sexual crime is committed by males and that percentage doesn’t change, even if they identify as women, then frankly my dear, you’re talking a load of bollocks.

itsallamysterytome · 03/10/2019 21:17

Used a unisex toilet in a department store in Barcelona. It was laid out like a typical female toilet and I went in with DH. The toilets were tucked in the corner and down a short corridor, there was a queue of men and me and one other woman.and it felt quite odd and a tiny bit intimidating. I would have felt that much more if DH wasn't with me.

I can't think of anything worse than mixed wards. It is bad enough when visitors overstay their welcome, without trying to preserve your dignity 24/7.

Again I said CAN. Not do. Not more likely. Bit higher risk. Just CAN.

I work with victims of abuse primarily now, have been a SARC nurse. I do get the statistics. Hence referring to capability rather than likelihood.

I have also worked with men with severe mental health difficulties because of their inability to live as they identify. I've known men die because of it.
I've also worked with abusers. I don't get to decide on my patients after all. I know I would rather work with.

AutumnCrow · 03/10/2019 21:45

doublebarrellednurse you're not making any sense here

EC22 · 03/10/2019 21:46

My sisters friend was sexually assaulted on a mixed psych ward. Mixed places make women vulnerable.

doublebarrellednurse · 03/10/2019 22:06

It's been a long day @AutumnCrow so apologies if I am not articulating myself well. I'm on call so answering between calls too.

Time for bed possibly.

AnyMinuteNow · 03/10/2019 22:24

nurse. I hope your profession are protrcting vulnerable women, as stated by the equality act.

I am an nhs customer and i want my wishes respected when I say no.

I don't understand your argument that uses 'can' as an assertion of does, then defend it, and being different. Confused

I do need to know the sex, not the gender, and as a nurse its absolutely vital if you are to protect life!

DrawingLife · 03/10/2019 23:25

Mixed wards - no way, and I'm really appalled that the NHS has broken the promise to work towards single sex wards.
I used to think toilets weren't a big problem, but I'm not so sure, looking at the problems with spy cameras and especially with the the way it's being rolled out. Just lazy relabelling of the doors. No floor to ceiling, single room. Mixed toilets with urinals?? Ew. As if that wasn't just an invitation to flashers.
With that in mind lots of institutions just take away the women's loo and keep the men's. At my daughter's school the boys have two toilets, the girls only one because one of theirs was turned "gender neutral". At the Old Vic they collected donations for "more women's loos", but it turns out all their toilets are now mixed sex, some with urinals, which means most women will self exclude. I'm getting angry just typing this. Mixed sex in addition, fine. As the only option it's women who lose out and I'm not ok with it.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 04/10/2019 01:28

Since nurse has already said that nurse can’t tell the difference between a male that identifies/tries to present as a woman and an actual woman, I don’t think centring females is top of nurse’s agenda.
