noticed on Amazon recently that they are selling a 42,000 piece puzzle!

Ooh I'd love to have a designated room with a giant table for this, you wouldn't see me for months.

I don't start with the edges. I start with the boldest colour then the next boldest.

Oh dear, have you thought about getting help?Grin

I've tried to recreate daylight by using a head torch but DP and DS were outraged.

Now that is genius. It's frustrating when it gets dark and even with the light on, my head gets in the way and casts a shadow and I can't see the pieces properly.
Also loving the idea of the advent calendar.

100PercentThatBitch · 28/09/2019 13:01

I don't have table space for bigger than a 1000 sadly and I have seen bigger I'd like to do

BaronessBomburst · 28/09/2019 13:09

Oh yes! You really need daylight to see sea and sky. I use an anglepoise lamp in the evenings which helps; the overhead lights are useless.

gabsdot45 · 28/09/2019 13:16

I love doing jigsaws. DD and I started one this week. I'm delighted she likes them too.
I'll put on a podcast and work away on them for hours

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/09/2019 13:17

I see to love them as a child and would so one face up then do it again face down. I haven’t don’t one for years but spotted one on top of DS wardrobe (Rosetta Stone - oh goody) and may have a play tonight.

myself2020 · 28/09/2019 13:18

spend all morning with husband, 6 year old and 2 year old one one. had tons of fun

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/09/2019 13:21

Sadly I don’t have anywhere where I can do one and leave it, so will need to complete it or put it away.

100PercentThatBitch · 28/09/2019 13:25

If we could use this thread as a recommend page where people give each other ideas as to which one next that would be good.

This is the one that DS has. It’s so monochrome!

I was thinking years Grin Oh and it costs £231

I usually start with edges but I'm currently doing one with birds with a lot of plain white edging and got bored with trying every piece in one gap so have gone with doing the birds and some foliage first. It feels really odd not to have the edge done.

These are a couple of my favourites

that rosetta stone one looks diabolical!

We used to do them as a family, my mother would tut, she cannot do them, you could give her the last piece and she would not be able to fit it in, but me and my dad were brilliant at them!

I recently did one at a fancy hotel....they had some in the sitting room, it was whisky bottle shaped, which meant the edges were BUGGERS and it was of different whisky labels/brands

I did about a third of it, dh was very nonplussed and unhelpful then the housekeeper came and joined in, she stayed up later and had about another third of it done, and I had another bash after breakfast but dh was champing at the bit to get on the road, so I had to leave it.

I am going to get a bit of glass for my coffee table so I can set that over the top and keep one going. I have a roll up thingy that i have never even opened, maybe I'll give that a go first.

That could be the understatement of the year - where would you begin! How is your son doing? Has he found 2 pieces that fit together yet? Grin

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/09/2019 13:58

He’s not even started it yet so I am commandeering it. I am looking forward to it.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/09/2019 13:59

Do those roll mats work?

ineedaholidaynow · 28/09/2019 14:19

LordProf I don't know about the roll mats but we use a portapuzzle, which lives under the sofa when we aren't puzzling

Souwest · 28/09/2019 14:25

Love them and so does dh.

BelfastSmile · 28/09/2019 14:26

I love them, but don't have much time these days... this thread has inspired me to ask for a jigsaw board that could fit under the sofa for Christmas.

I love the ones that are made up of loads of tiny photos - PhotoMosaics or something? I got a Titanic one for Christmas one year, and we had a several-day-long power cut that year, so we all got under duvets and did the jigsaw while we had daylight!

Whathappenedtothelego · 28/09/2019 14:31

Yay, someone else who doesn't do the edges first! I start with the boldest colour too.

I really like the Ravensburger ones with bookshelves with books grouped by seasons and colours. I also like Galison, and House of Puzzles jigsaws, they have fun shapes.
I like ones that slot together with a satisfying soft click. Nothing worse than flimsy ones where you can't tell if you've made a mistake.

GinisLife · 28/09/2019 14:47

My me m was really into her jigsaws and always had one on the go. My dad cut her a piece of really solid chip board and it slid under the sofa. She had some circular jigsaws that were made by (I think) Worthingtons ? There was a birds one, world famous monuments, No idea what happened to them when she died.

Chatt3rb0x · 28/09/2019 14:56

They seem to love them in the US. Went to a general store in Cape Cod that had a whole room of White Mountain puzzles, dh wouldn’t let me buy one.Sad

Mummybares · 28/09/2019 14:57

Oh god no incredibly dull

DonttouchthatLarry · 28/09/2019 14:57

I love jigsaws - my favourites are the Colin Thompson ones (as SilverySurfer posted above) as they're so intricate and detailed. I have no interest in acres of sky etc.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 28/09/2019 15:07

I love them! Great for doing with other people in bits and bobs when you're just chilling in the winter, although I always want to finish them off on my own so I get the glory :) My DP always gets two for my birthday (in the autumn) and I save one to do at Christmas. I might ask for one of those puzzle boards this year... currently do them on my yoga mat but it's bad for my back!

latedecember1963 · 28/09/2019 15:17

Is Barney's Newsbox in Grasmere still selling jigsaws? I used to love browsing in there and usually came away with at least 2 puzzles.
Since we've had our caravan on Anglesey we've neglected the Lake District. Perhaps we need a jigsaw and Grasmere gingerbread pilgrimage for old times sake.

Tropicalsunshine · 28/09/2019 15:32

I'm inspired! Has anyone done one of the 3d ones? I'm tempted by the Taj Mahal but it will be disappointing if there isn't the required 'snap'
