To not tip when eating out?

Saw a thread on another board that mentioned tipping when eating out and whether or not you should. The majority of posters seemed to think of a person as being tight fisted or ungenerous if they don't tip. I disagree and don't tip as a matter of routine, only if the service is exceptional. AIBU?

No, I don't tip, and YANBU.

Everyone gets the national minimum wage or higher these days, and waitresses and hairdressers (who USED to get shit pay pre year 2000) get the same pay as everyone else now.

No need to tip them at all, so don't do it.

May as well tip the checkout operator in Asda, or the bank Clerk in Barclays, or factory workers or sewing machinists, or admin assistants, or refuse collectors.

NO-ONE needs a tip in this country.

'Tipping people' is 2 decades out of date.

Personal choice. I always leave a tip. But in the UK everyone in that restaurant earns at a minimum, minimum wage, I've earnt that as a shop assistant, a role that doesn't get tipped, so part of me still questions why I do it, but I still do it. It's irrational when you look at it like that.

Often restaurants don't even give the tip to the server, it goes into the day's takings. So no YANBU.

If I was eating out with someone who refused to tip, I would think they were tight, no matter how “out of date” they believed the practice to be.

I read that thread too OP. I always tip 10-20% in restaurants assuming no problems and didn't realise it was an objectionable practice so I will be watching this with interest!

I HATE tipping. For the reasons already mentioned above. The employee earns a fair wage so they do not need a tip. Nobody tips me in my job.

Why not ask if the restaurant does this and if it does, give your tip direct to the staff.

@bluegirlgreen if I knew how I would have I agree with you completely. Many posters got arsey about it though saying they wouldn't even date a person that didn't tip as a matter of routine

Where my student daughter works she's on minimum wage works very hard and tips make her day same as the other staff there too.

If it's particularly good then sure, leave a tip. No routine expectation though.

I check the bill religiously first. Because what really pisses me off is ordering a £100 meal, then getting a bill for £112.50 because they decide they're due a 12.5 % service charge. That's happened a couple of times where I've tipped a tenner without looking at the breakdown, then realised they've taken a 12.5% tip without consulting me. I think it's so cheeky.

If service is good and every thing is above and beyond then yes. But in reality eating out costs quite a bit and normally thinks are ok but not brilliant so no they don't get tipped.

If I was eating out with someone who insisted on tipping, I would think they were a mug, and wonder if they also tip the barmaid at the pub, the woman who sold them a pair of shoes last week, the receptionist at the council who helped them with their query, the refuse collectors who collect their rubbish every week, the woman who put their £75 worth of shopping through the checkout in Tesco, the Halfords employee who changed their 2 front tyres and the bulbs for their brake lights, and the teacher who has been teaching their kid this past few months.

When DD was a waitress she said tips partly made up for the appalling way she was treated by some customers.

In the UK, no I don’t routinely tip. If I have felt the service is genuinely good then I do.

In the USA I do, as they don’t have a minimum wage and are financially reliant on tips in a way nobody is in the UK. That said, I won’t tip there if the service is outright bad.

EXACTLY. It's daft, outdated, and bonkers to tip restaurant staff and hairdressers in 2019. No need for it whatsoever, and only mugs do it IMO.

If hairdressers and restaurant staff should get tips, then so should everyone else, everywhere, in every job.

I HATE tipping. I’m all for being polite and grateful to waiting staff - I did the job myself as a teen but why do they need extra money over and above their wages when we now have a NMW in place? It’s totally unnecessary. I feel the same about tipping my hairdresser. I don’t receive any extra money over and above my salary for doing my job.

I usually tip in restaurants.not of course if they have already added 10% to the bill automatically (which annoys me, but I pay it!).
I was annoyed on Friday evening, as I was staying in a hotel and ordered on room service. The lady who took my order asked if I was aware there was a £5 tray charge. Fair enough. When my food was delivered, I had to sign the bill and it gave the combined cost of the food and tray charge, and left a space for me to add a tip. I didn't, but I thought this was very cheeky. And next time I stay at that hotel, I will buy my dinner en route.

Some cheeky bastards even try and add a gratuity on! If they do, I will insist it's taken off.

I do not tip anyone. EVERYone in the UK gets the same bloody national minimum wage OR MORE.

I bought a takeaway coffee the other day, went to pay by card and the server asked if I wanted to add a tip on. Wtf. For making the drink?!
