AIBU Greta Thunberg?

onalongsabbatical · 22/09/2019 10:34

AIBU to ask everyone who can to get behind Greta Thunberg, even if only online, as she's now getting a lot a lot a lot of hate. She clearly threatens people - especially her polar opposites, men, rich old men, powerful men (did I mention men?). Let's all give her the lurve and support she needs.
So on FB I challenged one just now - Why are you attacking a young woman? - and he disappeared. Funny, that.

How is she a phoney Lafalala

She does too much, too emotional, too single-minded

Not enough, phoney, acting, not real

People say anything really

DoctorAllcome · 24/09/2019 20:36

Meh, we will need extra population for when we colonize other planets and systems anyway.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/09/2019 20:38

She’ll be last weeks news when her puppet masters have used up their sound bites

If so, I hope she'll cope with the rejection when doors start to close and assorted "leaders" are disinclined to put themselves forward to be shouted at. We might not like Trump treating her as an irritating irrelevance, but somehow I don't think he'll be the last

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 20:40

She’ll be ok

Better than your typical sleb on the decline I’d wager

Plus she said no to meeting Trump apparently (op)

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 20:41

Pp rather

She’s got 5.1m on IG away so has a platform already no idea on Twitter. She can generate stuff from there

Jammin5 · 24/09/2019 20:52

I have no doubt that she’s genuine. But her sanctimonious histrionics annoys the hell out of me. Yeah, I know I’m unreasonable.

Butchyrestingface · 24/09/2019 21:21

Pretty much what I said up thread.

Amusing as his savaging of guests could be, (Michael Howard!), Jeremy Paxman found out to his cost that no-one really enjoys being humiliated on live TV, and soon enough governmental ministers were sending their minions into the lion’s den rather than risk a mauling themselves.

I fear Greta’s days as a keynote speaker may be seriously numbered if she makes a habit of yesterday’s antics.

Pomegranatepompom · 24/09/2019 21:30

How is she a credible keynote speaker anyway? Bizarre world where people strive to be insta influencers and 16 year olds are being given platforms like this rather than scientists.

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 21:37

Not only that she’s nominated for Nobel Peace Prize that’ll annoy people if she gets it. Hope she does

Pomegranatepompom · 24/09/2019 21:42

Not annoyed but that are people far more worthy, although often are.

Jillyhilly · 24/09/2019 22:03

How is she a credible keynote speaker anyway?

She’s not, but is it possible that some adults rather like being yelled at by her? It’s the only thing I can think that makes any sense.

I definitely don’t think she’s acting. She comes across to me as someone who is really traumatised. Filled to the brim with eco-anxiety and encouraged in her behaviour by credulous adults who have abdicated any responsibility for her well-being. It’s a shocker, really.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/09/2019 22:06

Not really - when you consider this is the award denied to Gandhi but given to such as Yasser Arafat, the EU and Barack Obama, I can't help feeling that some of its gloss has become a little tarnished

That said, another nakedly political choice might well be seen as an apt metaphor for our times

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 22:08

Ah someone will be I’m sure. Doing a talk has done it. At least when people say to hey what have you ever done’ she can say won a Nobel Peace Prize and you?

Pomegranatepompom · 24/09/2019 22:15

It's totally baffling, yes she has raised awareness, oh and took a boat when a video call would have sufficed.
I think the 'you ruined my childhood' moment will actually have a negative impact, it's far easier to dismiss her message.

Jillyhilly · 24/09/2019 22:42

'you ruined my childhood'

My well-fed, warm, comfortable, peaceful childhood in one of the safest countries in the world in the most prosperous period of history the world has ever known, thanks to industrialisation and human ingenuity. It’s been hell, I tell you.

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 22:49

It’s not often people remember lines from speeches so many quoters

onalongsabbatical · 24/09/2019 22:57

So; to sum up, 24/09/19 - the British PM was told by the Supreme Court, led by a woman, that he acted unlawfully and misled the Queen; an impeachment is begun against the US President by the Speaker of the house, a woman; and a 16 year old young woman with Aspergers and fifteen of her peers launched an international lawsuit against the five biggest polluting countries who have also ratified the climate accord. I think Feminism is having a good day people.

AbsentmindedWoman

Stop twisting and misreading what I wrote. I said she was depressed when she was 8, not since she was 8, the way you write it's as if she has always been depressed. You clearly do not understand ASD. As for the rest of the ghouls on her speaking 'as a mum' does not give you the right to denigrate someone, question her puberty and so on. So narrow-minded to think a 16 year old must be a puppet or mentally ill when they speak truth to power.

AbsentmindedWoman · 24/09/2019 23:25

@obligations

Um I have not twisted anything - she has not just had a brief bout of depression at age 8. Her problems were/ are longterm and complex. She didn't eat for three months at age 11, because of her worry over the environment. Her diagnosis include OCD and an eating disorder. Her mother has written a book about how troubled her two young daughters are.

She cites her school strike which has evolved to this ongoing campaign as the cure for her mental health problems. That's what I mean about an external locus of control.

It is dangerous and irresponsible to encourage this kid to think the fix to her mental health problems lies in shouldering the burden of saving humanity from a fatal environmental crisis.

I understand ASD quite well. I am not, for one second, suggesting that ASD is in itself a mental illness.

Helpfindme · 25/09/2019 02:09

She is being used and looks high.

MangoFeverDream · 25/09/2019 04:00

I didn't mention anything about any country so the immigration element is mute, it is a global problem and we want to decrease the population as it is a huge driver to increased use of resources or do you not realise that

Immigration element isn’t mute and is not a wash globally as the West uses far more resources than developing countries. Immigration from low carbon to high carbon countries will increase carbon emissions overall and massively increases that individual’s lifetime carbon output.

Most Western countries would actually have a declining population already if not for immigration. This is where overpopulation counts the most.

So yeah, it’s absolutely something you need to be concerned about. Talk about an elephant in the room Hmm

Whats

How about unclutching those pearls

conderellainyellakissedafella · 25/09/2019 05:28
