To be disgusted at Gogglebox

When asked how Boris Johnson 'shut up' a woman grilling him, Izzi Warner said, "shoved his knob in her gob."

Her sister then said later on in the show, "I played Tig (Tag) not so long ago. But we called it #MeToo and basically we had to chase each other and either grab somebody's boob or Bum and then say (#MeToo)

AIBU or is this vile?

While I wasn’t horrified or disgusted, I didn’t find the comments funny and think C4 made a serious error of judgement airing them.

But I generally don’t find those two funny anyway and think they should just stick to stuffing their faces while watching the telly.

Vynalbob · 22/09/2019 18:39

It was a tastless joke. I do not think bad about the girls making it but CH4 shouldn't have used it. Not because it was bad but because they should have forseen the massive offence a few people may feel and should have protected their "goggle stars"

I think its funny and unpretentious sillyness

Alleycat1 · 22/09/2019 18:41

There is a difference between 'dark humour' and just plain vulgarity.

frumpety · 22/09/2019 19:24

The sisters are overweight , Northern and female. They will have encountered all the various guises of misogyny through their relatively short lifetimes. Being overweight, Northern and female instil's in you a certain skill set, you need to make a joke about anything and everything related to that onslaught of misogyny, you need to out bloke that bloke, make the joke first and the joke is on the bloke. Or at least you hope it is.

Rtruth · 22/09/2019 19:33

I thought it was funny.

I get humour is subjective, so understand it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But don’t think anyone should be that offended by a joke. It’s not like someone’s shit on your carpet.

I’m intrigued, what do you find offensive?

  1. blowjobs
  2. suggest Boris has a big enough one to keep someone quiet
  3. raising discussion point of sexual assault in comedic way, which not once did they condone it.
  4. saying something risqué on channel 4
  5. making light of a very serious issue, whilst watching TV in relaxed manner? (Glad they didn’t play Yawn rape)

Honestly though (enough of my poor humour) I don’t think I’ve ever been offended by a joke, when it clearly was one.

Drabarni · 22/09/2019 19:35

I love these posters who have a great sense of humour (self assessed) yet don't find funny things, funny . Grin

Twinkled · 22/09/2019 19:37

I agree with you Patrick. Also this is not dark humour, more in line with thick and sexist

FamilyOfAliens · 22/09/2019 19:48

I hope you're getting the help that you need to work through your issues Smile.

I haven’t read every post in detail, but this comment to a survivor of sexual abuse is disgusting.

passionfruit11 · 22/09/2019 19:54

I thought it was funny. However, if I had found it offensive I would have simply moved on and not watched it again. I certainly wouldn't have went online to badger the producers and have the girls dropped from the show, as some have done

Vivianebrookskoviak · 22/09/2019 20:02

It's just a bit of fun. I find it quite funny actually.

The only people damaging the credibility of the #metoo movement are those making false claims. Hmm

mum11970 · 22/09/2019 20:02

I laughed

FelicisNox · 22/09/2019 20:04

I'm going to say it: it takes a certain mentality to enjoy Gogglebox IMO and it's usually the same people who like the X Factor, Celebrity BB, Love Island and Jezza Kyle.

Don't get me wrong, each to their own but let's call a spade a spade: it's trash TV so what do you expect?

CasanovaFrankenstein · 22/09/2019 20:19

Hilarious? Really? Dull and mildly humorous maybe.

Agree with the poster who said not enough people take metoo seriously and silly jokes don't help, it just reinforces that.

Lilymossflower · 22/09/2019 20:35

To all the people saying 'its just a joke'

That's exactly how sexual abuse becomes normalised in our culture.

TV shows and little comments and jokes like these. They all contribute to how we see sexual abuse subconsciously.
Normalising it and thus allowing the perpetrators (the people who actually run the world and own TV etc)
To continue getting away with it

ToftyAC · 22/09/2019 20:41

I am an abuse survivor. Quite frankly I find Gogglebox hilarious and I very much laughed at the comments. Why? Because I fucking refuse to be a victim - and it was funny.

macblank · 22/09/2019 20:50

I have t seen this, but I have seen the sisters before make, remarks some thin skinned people might take offence at.

I've never heard of this #metoo and I am a survivor of childhood abuse

From what I've heard was said, I too think not quite funny.

I have a quite dark twisted humour some days, and anything that takes the piss out of something like this, I like it. I'm not offended by it, and I'm one of the ones who should be.

I suspect a bunch of daily mail readers didn't get their princess Di dose, so lashed out at this. They didn't demean survivors at all.

Lighten up, and enjoy life, and stop taking everything so serious.

peachgreen · 22/09/2019 20:58

The only people damaging the credibility of the #metoo movement are those making false claims.

Sums up the mentality of the kind of people who find this sort of thing funny. Hmm

Ravenesque · 22/09/2019 21:42

@02Vivianebrookskoviak, WTAF! Wow, you really are a nasty piece of work.

GabsAlot · 22/09/2019 21:43

I did think it was immature playing tag in your mid twenties although i do love the film may be thats the sort of thing they were doing

i dont generally like them two though theyve said some really thick things on tv in previous series

yolofish · 22/09/2019 22:03

I've always thought Ellie and Izzie were as thick as pig shit - now confirmed.

gforg · 22/09/2019 22:25

@PatricksRum completely agree. Just seems to be commoners watching commoners but then again I am a ‘middle class southerner’ so what do I know 🙄

Lovely13 · 22/09/2019 23:52

They are young and say stupid things. Never particularly funny. I miss the lovely old pair from Liverpool. June and Leon. Yah! Love the two ladies in Bristol. Always a treat.

Mummyshark2019 · 22/09/2019 23:55

To be expected when you watch garbage like Gogglebox.

abcdeg · 23/09/2019 04:44

@Mummyshark2019

Gogglebox isn't garbage! I definitely didn't have high expectations at first but a family member convinced me to watch and I trusted their judgment.

It was actually very enjoyable, watching others reactions- how is that trashy? Obviously you've never watched it. Granted some of the stars have run their course...

abcdeg · 23/09/2019 04:47

@gforg

We're all commoners, being middle class doesn't make anyone special. People of all demographics watch, as is shown by the cast themselves.
