To be disgusted at Gogglebox

When asked how Boris Johnson 'shut up' a woman grilling him, Izzi Warner said, "shoved his knob in her gob."

Her sister then said later on in the show, "I played Tig (Tag) not so long ago. But we called it #MeToo and basically we had to chase each other and either grab somebody's boob or Bum and then say (#MeToo)

AIBU or is this vile?

I don't know why people are always surprised that the majority of women aren't feminists when it's clearly demonstrated in every survey conducted.

riotlady · 21/09/2019 11:54

A bit in poor taste but not sickening, I hope they’re not kicked off for it.

cricketballs3 · 21/09/2019 12:14

She was told off by her sister, so not sure why you are so outraged OP

I though take more offense at people who look down their noses at other's TV preferences

hiphopchick · 21/09/2019 12:43

@PatricksRum

LOL, I could not be arsed to get upset about something so trivial.

But then I have a good sense of humour, and don't get mortally offended at naff-all.

It was funny IMO!

Thegallofher · 21/09/2019 12:52

It’s the programme makers that should be castigated here. The success of this programme lies in the viewers sharing in the viewing experience of the featured couples/families. The people that come over the best are the ones that appear less self conscious and just make off the cuff remarks in that couch potato state most of us watch telly in. The ones that are conscious of how they’re coming across are painful to watch - the hairdresser with his new partner has become a pastiche of himself and the vicar woman was prone to pontificating. I like those girls and I think they weren’t justifying or endorsing BJ sticking his knob in a woman’s mouth - they were just aware of his reputation and I think social historians would find it revealing that a member of the British Public would say such a lewd thing about their fine and upstanding Prime Minister. The MeToo Joke was bad and I would imagine happened on a pissed up night amongst friends. I don’t for one minute imagine that they were suggesting a woman complaining about sexual harassment was something to laugh about. It was just a stupid, ill-considered remark reflecting a stupid lark-about amongst their mates. The Producers should have protected them from this and said ‘actually that’s not going to come across well, we’re going to edit it out’.

I am an intelligent person and think Gogglebox is a great programme that reveals a lot about class, politics and relationships. As a snapshot of Britain trying to wrestle with what the hell is happening with Britain since the referendum I think it’s a priceless social history resource.

ymf117 · 21/09/2019 13:28

Poor taste.

Show is aimed at all demographics and the comments were cringeworthy. I think a lot of complaints will be made which is a shame as these girls are usually funny

DariaMorgendorffer · 21/09/2019 13:40

I thought it was funny. My goodness, take it in the spirit it was intended.

EndoftheWorlds · 21/09/2019 13:42

Ellie used to be my sons hairdresser. She is very funny and a great story teller.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 21/09/2019 13:43

!!!!

It was in incredibly poor taste.

The mental image it conjoured, the laughing at such an issue, the denigration of women's issues, men's atrocities. It was a wholly shitty thing to say, let alone to have actually played as a game.

DH and I exchanged horrified glances and spent a fair few minutes giggling like well tickled 2 year olds.

It was possibly the best bit if truly dark humour I have heard in a long while. Totally unPC, unexpected and extremely thought provoking.

DH and I are still discussing it and the wider context now.

Toastymash · 21/09/2019 14:07

Outside the world of Mumsnet those kinds of comments are normal. Chill out a bit.

SimonJT · 21/09/2019 14:12

I thought it was funny.

I have also been sexually assaulted.

🤷🏽‍♂️

SweetPetrichor · 21/09/2019 14:52

I didn't see it, but it's my sort of joke. I'd have laughed at that.

Ringdonna · 21/09/2019 15:00

Lot of snowflakes on here , I thought it was hilarious. The Feminist board is over there

LuckyAmy1986 · 21/09/2019 15:17

Im all for dark humour, frankie Boyle or Jimmy Carr are some of my favourites but those jokes aren’t even funny

Ditto. I don’t find them offensive personally. But hilarious? Really?!

TumblingTumbleWeeds · 21/09/2019 15:44

British humor be the best in the world and what was described in the OP sounds a funny as fuck. The more inappropriate the harder I laugh.

Soon you'll only be allowed to watch 'slap stick' rubbish and jokes about drunks falling over.

supersop60 · 21/09/2019 16:11

As a PP said - I blame the editor. Channel 4 could have left it out, but they chose not to. I didn't find the remarks funny, but they were typical of the sisters.
And before anyone starts judging them for the programmes they watch - they are TOLD what to watch, so that all the participants watch the same thing.
I love it. (although I might claim to be offended by the dimness of the two Geordie girls)

GorkyMcPorky · 21/09/2019 16:15

I laughed/gasped too. Also tickled by the worthy comments about us Gogglebox watchers being thick as shit.

PuffHuffle5 · 21/09/2019 16:18

It was funny and it’s the type of joke real people make. Gogglebox is about ‘real’ people watching and commenting on the telly. If you prefer something more PC then watch something else. And never play cards against humanity...

SandraOhshair · 21/09/2019 16:46

I wasnt offended either, and found the me too one funny.
Everyone's entitled to say what they want. You dont have to like it. That is life.

NaviSprite · 21/09/2019 16:52

As my Grandfather often said, if a joke can be made about one subject, then it should be true for all.

I haven’t watched Gogglebox but I do think that those saying the “game” is damaging to the movement are perhaps being a little over dramatic. It’s not in good taste, but because some find it funny does not mean they agree. Frankie Boyle has made some extremely distasteful jokes/comments throughout his career and as he has said since losing his job with the BBC “I’m not fucking serious!” - curious for those who have issues with the game, but okay comedians like Frankie Boyle and Jimmy Carr, who often joke about rape and molestation? Does that not also count as the minimisation of a horrific issue? All in all I say if you find it funny, great, if not, your prerogative, but to be immediately offended to such a dramatic degree is disconcerting IMO.

missyB1 · 21/09/2019 17:04

As pp said it’s trashy TV and it features trashy people. It doesn’t surprise me that silencing a woman by shoving a dick in her mouth would be considered a side splitting hilarious joke on there.

For those saying that Frankie Boyle is funny - no he’s not, he likes to poke fun at disabled kids. Oh but I guess that’s funny really and I should just “lighten up” 🙄

Aaarrgghhh · 21/09/2019 17:57

I was an abused woman, I was also raped as an adult and long term as a child. I have a dark sense of humour, I don’t get offended because I choose not to. If you don’t find it funny that’s okay, kindly don’t speak for those of us who have been hurt at the hands of men as if you are speaking for all of us, because you aren’t. But I remind you that humour has no limits, you do.

Sugartits27 · 21/09/2019 18:02

Pretty funny in a silly, crude way. No worse than the crass stuff me and dp say to each other.

The point of gogglebox is that it's supposed to show people's natural reactions in their own surroundings. If they start editing everything remotely controversial the show wouldn't be the same.

Lifecraft · 21/09/2019 18:31

Just because someone is offended doesn't make them right.

Fresta · 21/09/2019 18:33

@missyB1I don't think Goggle Box is full of trashy people- you're more offensive than they are! Goggle box families have a fairly wide demographic and are definitely not all from the same walks of life! From what I can tell they are all a diverse bunch and not trashy at all. I like that they represent different cultures, different regions of the Uk, different classes and different sexualites and relationships. Long may it continue. To censor it too much would be to mis-represent the British viewing public.
