For asking to be called they/them?

YANBU
Such whims (or instructions from woke record company bosses) are regressive, sexist and dangerous for women.

But great for the careers of mediocre men.

Sashkin · 15/09/2019 22:54

From Wikipedia: “Smith was bullied for having breasts as a child, and had liposuction at age 12”.

I think it’s quite sad that the end result of being teased for having breasts was deciding his bullies were right all along and that did mean he was really a girl.

Being a chubby boy is not the same thing as being female (just as “failing at masculinity” is not the same thing as being female, and women are not just “everyone who didn’t quite make the cut for being considered as men, ie gay men, trans men AND trans women, and anyone else we don’t think counts as a proper man for whatever reason”).

ChocChocButtons · 15/09/2019 22:54

Yes he is ridiculous..there are two genders male or female.

Mythreefavouritethings · 15/09/2019 22:57

I don’t care what people want to call themselves but I resent being preached to and having a jumped up pop star dictate how I address others. Let’s take a scenario where someone’s relative goes missing and they want to give police the best chance of finding them, are you still going to insist on ‘they’ or narrow things down a little? I am female but I am not going to spend every day focusing on this, I have too many other things to get on with.

Ariadnepersephonecloud · 15/09/2019 22:58

Agree with the general view on the thread, he is just attention seeking. And rude. Hope his new album sinks like a stone for this sexist nonsense.

Whenyourehome · 15/09/2019 22:58

They have said they think like a woman, and I couldn't help wondering which one...

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/09/2019 22:59

Grammatically, it riles the hell out of me.

hiphopchick · 15/09/2019 22:59

@gc400

YANBU.

Used to like him and loved his first 4 or 5 songs, but he is just boring, irritating, and tedious now.

He lost me when he banged on about how 'it's about time a gay man was recognised at the Oscars.' Then every song he - sorry THEY - released seemed more whiny and drony than the last.

Sam must be needing the publicity!. Annoying arse.

UrsulaPandress · 15/09/2019 23:00

The guy is an utter self obsessed tosser.

Knitclubchatter · 15/09/2019 23:01

maybe it's like people with multiple personalities? just look at SS and think of Sybil.
it's really sad for those who are genuinely challenged about who they are when minor celebs jump onto a bandwagon and appear totally disingenuous. SS's coming out wreaks of a media stunt.

Starksforthewin · 15/09/2019 23:01

Attention seeking twonk.

New single not selling well enough?

So bored of these ‘celebs’ trying to ‘out woke’ each other. Just shut up and sing, that is all that is required of you. You’re an entertainer, not the freaking Dalai Lama! 🙄

maddening · 15/09/2019 23:01

What about "heher" and "herhe' depending on which way the person feels?

Isittheend · 15/09/2019 23:02

YANBU. He needs a Biscuit

TheAlternativeTentacle · 15/09/2019 23:02

But it’s his choice, that’s his right

It is them's right to say whatever they want, it doesn't mean the rest of the world can't silently scream that them needs to stop being such a fucking dickwad.

NeelixFelicis · 15/09/2019 23:02

They is an attention seeking knobber

Itallt0omuch · 15/09/2019 23:04

It's a load of bullshit. Non binary is what used to be known as "having a personality". Ie, everyone has one, nobody fits 100% of gender stereotypes all the time. I'm non binary too apparently. I'm a woman who wears trousers, flat shoes but I also wear make up. But I'm not a massive snowflake so I don't need to insist on made up phrases to describe myself so I can be special. You're either a man or a woman. It's biology. The rest is personalities.

chipsandgin · 15/09/2019 23:07

They is making a joke of the English language (does anyone else hear sentences like that in Gollum’s voice..).

gc400 · 15/09/2019 23:08

I used to like Sam Smith when he first came on the scene. His music isn't as great now either.

The fuck he knows about being a woman. How does a woman think? Is it with a pink background or is it confined to make up shopping and sparkles?

bumblenbean · 15/09/2019 23:09

If he wishes to reject traditional male traits or even to think of himself as ‘non-binary’ - fine

Demanding that everyone addresses him by a non-sensical pronoun and banging on about how he thinks he’s like a woman because he can’t shift the weight from certain areas - not fine (and frankly absurd)

Genevieva · 15/09/2019 23:09

The thing I find weird about this whole personal pronoun thing is this:

When you are with someone you either call them by their name or you say 'you'. You won't generally be using the third person singular unless that person is absent. If they are absent they have no idea what pronoun you are using. It strikes me that the pronoun issue is indicative of people worrying too much about what other people are saying behind their backs.

GroggyLegs · 15/09/2019 23:10

I hear Yoda chipsandgin

He wouldn't tolerate this attention seeking bollocks.

Snugglepumpkin · 15/09/2019 23:11

Does anyone actually care what Sam Smith thinks Sam Smith is apart from Sam Smith & Sam Smiths mum?
Or does anyone actually hear any song on the radio & decide that they must sit & ponder on what gender the singer is for a bit?

I just put on music & honestly never really give a thought to who is singing or what gender/sex/whatever it is this week the singer might think they are.
I either like the song or I don't.

rwalker · 15/09/2019 23:13

Attention seeking who cares personaly I think twat would be a better way to refer to him.
Whats the betting Lilly Allen is dreaming up a new title
