To ask if you've got your central heating on?

It feels blimmin cold to me in the evening but I don't normally turn it on until the end of this month. Maybe I'm just getting older and feeling the chill ... 10th September would be a record I think!

No.

The central heating system is on but it will only click the radiators on if the temperature in the house drops below 16°C.

If I'm cold I put a vest on underneath my T-shirt and a jumper on over the top and when I'm just watching TV I cover myself in one of our many blankets.

managedmis · 11/09/2019 02:22

Not on quite yet. Been cold overnight though, 7/8 degrees etc.

LOVE the colder weather ❄️

@PinkLacy - the temp you mentioned would appear to be rather high unless elderly or infirm:

The World Health Organization's standard for comfortable warmth is 18 °C (64 °F) for normal, healthy adults who are appropriately dressed. For those with respiratory problems or allergies, they recommend no less than 16 °C (61 °F), and for the sick, disabled, very old or very young, a minimum of 20 °C (68 °F).

Heavily insulated modern house - so unbearably hot in these recent tropical summers, but now it earns its stripes, because we never need heating on in autumn or winter!

minesagin37 · 11/09/2019 05:10

DH and I struggling with different requirements. I'm preferring ice cold when I go to bed ( menopausal). He is freezing and probably quite rightly wants the heating on. So consequently it's on and off!

Ritascornershop · 11/09/2019 05:18

No, it’ll be a high of 16 tomorrow and we still keep the kitchen and bathroom windows open when we’re home.

TinyMystery · 11/09/2019 05:18

No, we don’t have central heating! Still haven’t sorted a fire guard for the wood burner so that’s not going on any time soon either. It’s a bit chilly in the mornings but I don’t feel like it’s that cold. I’m feeding the baby naked currently with only my legs under the duvet and I feel hot! It’s been 17.5-19 degrees in our room the last few days, with the bathroom and spare bedroom windows open. Hardly arctic.

MutedUser · 11/09/2019 05:21

YES 10 degrees outside last week I needed it on.

Shebertherbert · 11/09/2019 05:45

No its still on average 17 degrees. Which is comfortable for us. It probably wont be on for a while yet. During the day we wear appropiate clothes. We use blankets and dressing gowns in the evening. We have not felt the need for heating yet. We are frugal with the heating for ourselves. Noone young or elderly living here. But the cat as bad knees and the heat is good for them if I think he his bones are feeling the chill the radiators go straight on. I wont have him in pain to save a few quid. Luckily we likes to stuggle up to us and being wrapped in fleeces blankets. So he's fine just now too.

Hederex · 11/09/2019 05:50

Not yet. I grew up not allowed the heating on before Bonfire Night, and though I don't quite stick to that, I can't bring myself to put it on in September.

userabcname · 11/09/2019 06:15

No way! I have the window open and needed a fan yesterday. I'm amazed it's cold enough anywhere yet for the heating to be on.

DitheringBlidiot · 11/09/2019 06:20

We’ve had it on for a couple of mornings because I get up at 4.45/5ish and it’s quite cold at that hour, had it on last weekend too. I don’t really understand why people would pick a set date and not put the heating on until then! If you’re cold, put the heating on.

circleorsquare · 11/09/2019 06:26

@CountFosco we have cavity wall insulation and all it's done is make our house damp. I really wouldn't recommend having it done. Ours was done by our previous owners and we can't remove it Sad

Buddytheelf85 · 11/09/2019 06:35

No. It hasn’t been any cooler than 17.5 degrees in the house (south east). We’ve got a new baby too so don’t want to overheat him!

I’m amazed by some of the responses. Heating automatically on when it gets below 20 degrees?!!! No wonder the planet’s fucked.

historysock · 11/09/2019 06:35

It's on but I'll turn it off today as its due to get warmer again today...but then that's the case all summer. If it's cold in August I put it on. If it's cold it's cold, I don't care what month it is!

adaline · 11/09/2019 06:46

Nope - we still have all the windows open here in Cumbria!

Far far too warm for the heating - I even had the air con on in my car the other night after work as it was so warm!

Heyboyo · 11/09/2019 06:53

Not yet. New build so very well insulated. My thermostat is set to 21 so if it gets below that it’ll come on. It’s sitting at 24 just now and I’m in the north east.

nononever · 11/09/2019 06:56

Yes, it comes on automatic when below 20 degrees.

Shock

Our thermostat is set to 10 degrees, if it was 20 the heating would likely be on year round. North of Scotland here. It's 18 degrees inside at the moment and I'm just about to open windows.

Heyboyo · 11/09/2019 06:58

muminho

If I’m cold, the heating will go in. I’ll boost it. I refuse to sit cold and put 30 layers on in my home. I grew up in a cold house with my parents not wanting the heating on and it was miserable. I don’t want that for my child.

Heyboyo · 11/09/2019 07:00

nononever

You do realise that you’ll likely make everyone sick having the temp that low. There are minimum temps for a reason. I pity any children you have

HeronLanyon · 11/09/2019 07:00

No although have wanted to. Inherited lovely old piece of furniture and it has to sit close to a radiator - worried about it drying and cracking. Currently in mad kind of stand off. Can’t go on - will need heat at some point !

nononever · 11/09/2019 07:11

Grin Grin

Don't be ridiculous! I can't remember the last time either of us had a cold far less anything else. I'll pass on your sympathy to our children, who probably couldn't give a rat's arse what some random on the net thinks. Nice assumption that we never put the heating on and I shouldn't have to justify the fact that in the winter months our heating is actually on a schedule. Right now it is far too warm for heating here, yes even in the north of Scotland where we both ended up with t-shirt tans at the weekend past.

Heyboyo · 11/09/2019 07:32

Setting it to 10 degrees is not putting the heating on. It’s freezing.

HairyFloppins · 11/09/2019 07:34

My Scottish DH would pack all his belongings and leave if I set our thermostat to 10. Mine is on 21.5.

I would have thought you are all used to those temps by now though.
