It feels blimmin cold to me in the evening but I don't normally turn it on until the end of this month. Maybe I'm just getting older and feeling the chill ... 10th September would be a record I think!

No but our thermostat is reading 20c currently.

If it was lower and general consensus was that it is cold then yes I would flick it on - our upstairs is always warmer than downstairs and im still quite warm even with a summer duvet.

But! I did tweak the bathroom radiators on to low tonight so when the hot water comes on they heat up a little - ive noticed that the towels just arent drying during the daytime.

GeneandFred · 10/09/2019 23:30

No, our house is warm. Great in the Winter but a pain the Summer Grin

IWantMyHatBack · 10/09/2019 23:36

Yep. I've been known to turn it on in August occasionally (which is usually my reminder to book the boiler service)

Heating engineer told me it's better to turn it on occasionally over the summer rather than leaving it switched off and inactive, and better to give it a test run before it gets properly cold in case of faults etc.

CasperGutman · 10/09/2019 23:38

We have this thing called a thermostat. The heating has been "on" all summer.

Muminho · 10/09/2019 23:47

Obviously not. Virtually nobody in this thread has mentioned carbon footprint/ urgent need to change behaviours to have any chance of combatting climate change. Seriously does nobody think about this stuff? Does anyone care? Put a jumper on, make a hot water bottle, move around a bit. Nobody needs to put their heating on in the UK in September. Jeez. Bloody ridiculous.

YesQueen · 10/09/2019 23:57

I have put my duvet back on the bed though!

One thing I can recommend, my feet are always cold and I sleep in thermal socks year round. Bought a real sheepskin sold as a pet mat (it's amazing quality) and put it at the bottom of the bed so my feet are on it. Slept without socks for the first time in years Grin

Finfintytint · 11/09/2019 00:02

Agree Muminho, there are plenty of people who would like to be warm but have no real need other than comfort and ease. I have oil and have no choice in my rural area. I hate having to use it and I’m sparing with its use. I grew up in the 60s and 70s when heating was hit and miss due to power cuts, strikes and general hardship. Unless you are very elderly you will not die.

MrsTeaspoon · 11/09/2019 00:04

Jumper or dressing gown, hot water bottle, throw blanket in settee in evening - these are all the obvious things to do surely at this time of year? It seems so wrong to me to be using that much energy unnecessarily.
Even Scottish dreichness can be combatted with woolly socks and jumper in September!

BackforGood · 11/09/2019 00:07

Do the people who say 'I don't like being cold' not have warmer clothes ? I don't like being cold either, so I've moved from skirt and sandals / bare feet and legs, to jeans and socks. I've put a jumper on.
I'm aware MN is a World wide site, but I think the majority of posters are in the UK, and - yes, I know it varies, and tends, overall, to be colder in Scotland - it really isn't anywhere near cold enough to be needing heating on this week.

PickAChew · 11/09/2019 00:11

It has a thermostat, like most 21st century central heating. It's been coming on for a bit in the mornings and evenings, this week.

PickAChew · 11/09/2019 00:19

In all seriousness, where are you all where it's so cold? We've been in shorts and vests all day with doors and windows open to cool the house down. Still feeling balmy in here now, and saw it's meant to get warmer end of the week. I'm in the Cotswolds

Nuff said. I'm in the NE. It's been pleasant, today and feels mild enough, tonight, but we've had a few nights this past week where it's got down to about 7 or 8C by the early wee hours and we've woken up to misted up windows in the less well insulated rooms of the house.

skybluee · 11/09/2019 00:22

I care very much about carbon footprint, which is why I live somewhere where the heating bill is under £30 a month even when I use the heating, because it's so incredibly well insulated. That means I can use the heating as and when I need to, which results in me actually feeling more well as opposed to sitting there with blue nails and feeling cold to the touch. Its not as simple as heating on/heating off, it's about the type of property you choose - it could very easily be argued that some of you who are martyrs about heating (who often seem to fly yearly from what I can tell as well) actually have more of an impact/end up costing way more than some people who do use the heating.

Yes, for some people there IS a need to put heating on in September. I've felt pretty unwell recently and it was only the other day, when I did finally put the heating on for a few days I was saying to someone I actually FEEL well again now I'm not cold from 8am to midnight. Nothing like a good guilt trip though over someone's comfort...or a lack of appreciation that not all of us are able to 'get up and move around'.

PickAChew · 11/09/2019 00:23

PLeasant being fine with a light jacket over a t-shirt, this morning, warmer, this afternoon. Definitely wearing jeans and socks, though. Most people seem to have pulled their quilted jackets out of hibernation.

skybluee · 11/09/2019 00:24

I also would be very interested to hear the unit use/heating costs per month for someone like Muminho who is so virtuous about her heating... because I can pretty much guarantee they're likely to be more than mine, despite the attitude...

GlamGiraffe · 11/09/2019 00:25

Yes. The temperature in the house is sitting at around 14 degrees after a vast, top, cardi and fleece I put it on a bit. It is in zones though so only heat the bit were using.

Qwerty19 · 11/09/2019 00:29

I did this morning as the lounge was freezing and dd. Was so cold her hands were red..she feels cold more than us.
Dropped her to CM walked back in it was like an oven so windows open.

And had in for 30min sun morning

I hate it cold but the minute the heating on I feel Sick and irratable guessing it's the hormones.

PickAChew · 11/09/2019 00:30

My poor joints would seize up at 14C and I'd probably lose the use of my hands. Fine in the day, when I'm moving, but not in the evening when everything really hurts from moving and I just need to sit.

CTRL · 11/09/2019 00:38

I’ve had my heating on from the day after bank holiday !
The weather switched up real quick 😢

MorganKitten · 11/09/2019 01:02

Nope

MissConductUS · 11/09/2019 01:30

I was in the kitchen cleaning up after dinner and felt the central air conditioning start up. The forecast is for a high of 31 tomorrow.

irisheyesaresmiling7 · 11/09/2019 01:36

Yes. It's been coming on in the mornings for about an hour for the past couple of weeks and I've also started to light the stove in the evenings since last week.

RavenLG · 11/09/2019 01:37

17 is cold? Yikes wrap up at ours though, the heating is set to 18 Grin

MissTicPizza · 11/09/2019 01:42

I'm wondering where those of you who have put the central heating on live. We're in the north west and definitely don't need the heating on yet. Windows are open all day as well.

irisheyesaresmiling7 · 11/09/2019 02:04

@MissTicPizza, I'm in Northern Ireland.

UnrelentingFruitScoffer · 11/09/2019 02:10

Central Heating goes on at Halloween, before that wear a jumper.
