Are wax melts chavvy?

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 20:13

This is the opinion of a good friend when I told her that I had recently bought a few melts and a burner: 'Oh don't get into them, they are SO chavvy!'

I just want my house to not stink of baby wipes and crisp crumbs ffs!

Wax melts are MLM? No they're not. They're sold everywhere. I've just bought a load of lovely wax melts back from the US. They smell great. Different brand to Yankee Candle, they're a brand called "Better Homes and Gardens" available in Walmart and a way better product than YC.

Zoflorabore · 09/09/2019 03:47

I have a wax melts box that houses all of my melts, tis my pride and joy Grin I also have a special cutter thing and a huge collection of burners ( including electric ) and my house smells amazing

If that makes me chavvy then so be it....

Bloomburger · 09/09/2019 04:29

Women at DD's school sell these and are always trying to get us to buy them for the teachers presents because a 25 year old woman would be thrilled with 30 bloody smelly wax things Each Christmas, Easter and end of term 🙄

HennyPennyHorror · 09/09/2019 04:33

Carol they may be sold everywhere but they're also commonly used in MLMs.

Clockworkprincess · 09/09/2019 07:28

I'm using them at the moment. Tbf I've received them as presents over the years and the drawer was stacking up 😂 at the moment i have two on the go a spiced apple and a cinnamon. Quite like burning in the morning before i leave so the house smells nice of an evening.

Blue7 · 09/09/2019 07:48

Trying to work out if I'd prefer to be chavvy or a sneery cow

Grin

Is she the SIL from Mum?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/09/2019 13:02

Surely your house is supposed to smell of wet labradors, barbour jackets, and the oil fired aga

Mine smells of wet spaniels, wellies and vegetarian curry . . .

from123toabc · 09/09/2019 13:40

I do associate them as being used to cover up something gross.

If your house smells like cat poo and you light a 'unicorn sparkle' wax melt your house still smells like cat poo but with the added bonus of sickly chemical fragrance.

Same goes for auto air freshers etc.

Open a window- or if it's a smelly loo issue light a match (old house wife trick)

this is a personal taste thing though

jamoncrumpet · 09/09/2019 14:32

I have binned the Yankee ones as they were like living inside a plug in, but am open to more natural, less MLM ones. No Lynx Africa scents though.

Do most people use some sort of fragrance-emitting product in their homes? If so, are people not concerned about the chemicals they’re breathing in?

I don't, because most smelly stuff either makes me feel shite one way or another (joss sticks make my nose stream, a lot of scented candles/diffusers make me feel nauseous or trigger a migraine, plug-ins can manage both). Oddly, a few drops of Zoflora in water when I'm cleaning is fine.

If my house smells, it's usually because it needs a damn good clean and a damn good clean tends to sort it. I fling all the windows and the back door open for at least 30 minutes a day though. The only extra help it gets is a spray of something like Febreze but more subtle on the sofas, which get a bit dog-whiffy, and on the dog's bed.

LakieLady · 09/09/2019 15:25

Mrs H has started washing her laundry in 3 in 1 pods, with lenor, with lenor unstoppables. So 3 x the intensity 😂

Shock

Does she have no sense of smell?

I bought Comfort Intense by mistake, and it smells so strong I have to dilute it.

ChocChocButtons · 09/09/2019 15:30

My friend sells scency and to humour her I bought a warmer and some melts. Their actually nice. I have one in my bedroom and one in my living room.

ChocChocButtons · 09/09/2019 15:31

Why has this turned into a Mrs Hinch bash session. She’s doing no own any harm on her instagram. Leave off.

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 09/09/2019 15:38

I don't use them (considering treating myself to one of those essential oil vapour pod things though) but I don't really mind if other people do, although the less synthetic the better and it is pretty obvious if you're using the scent as a cover up. I like a little waft of something nice!

Ornery · 09/09/2019 15:42

I’m laughing that so many people are using the phrase ‘lush’ in a discussion about whether wax melts are chavvy. Grin I think that answers the question. Wink
I’m still in existential crisis over the fact that my student child owns a scentsy oil blend that I quite like though. Being a crashing snob is fine as long as you can recognize it. Grin

ChocChocButtons · 09/09/2019 15:52

The word lush is defo Chav! I hate it

CaptainButtock · 09/09/2019 16:13

I think your friend may be confusing ‘chavvy’ and ‘common’

lvsel · 09/09/2019 16:27

Lol they aren't chavvy

Blue7 · 09/09/2019 20:23

Lush makes me think of Gavin & Stacey which I love. I'm now going to get told watching Gavin & Stacey is chavvy. I'm not, honestly.

Tweetingmagpie · 09/09/2019 20:30

My house is pretty immaculate and doesn’t smell, I have a cleaner twice a week and I clean a lot too ( this isn’t as ott as it sounds, I have a very big house and lots of children!) I also have dogs but they don’t come inside.

I have smelly candles etc, because I like the smell, or because I’m trying to cover anything up.

I do laugh at the people who can’t bear the smell of anything other than fresh air and have to dilute fabric conditioner, delicate old souls Grin are these the same people who can’t even finish a happy meal and get 4 meals from a small chicken Grin

Tweetingmagpie · 09/09/2019 20:31

That should say NOT because I’m trying to cover anything up!

Sugarplumfairy65 · 09/09/2019 20:57

There are lots of independent candle makers who aso make wax melts. Most of them are not MLM and the quality of their candles is as good, if not better than the likes of Jo Malone

Wehttam · 09/09/2019 21:10

@CaptainButtock I think you’re right, they are common ✔️

Adoptthisdogornot · 09/09/2019 22:10

Never seen a wax melt in the home of any of the upper or upper middles I've known. But who the fuck cares? Have what you like, life is short and precious so do whatever makes you happy

PookieDo · 12/09/2019 18:00

I don’t know what came over me but I felt like I always worried about candles and the like so I now have an electric warmer Blush

No idea what melts are the best though!
