Are wax melts chavvy?

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 20:13

This is the opinion of a good friend when I told her that I had recently bought a few melts and a burner: 'Oh don't get into them, they are SO chavvy!'

I just want my house to not stink of baby wipes and crisp crumbs ffs!

I love mine. It’s electric. I’m definitely not chavvy and I don’t care if they’re seen as that.

TrickyKid · 08/09/2019 21:25

Maybe she just means they're a bit naff, like plug ins or Yankee candles. They are a bit cheap smelling and overpowering.

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 21:26

I will let 5yo DS make the final judgement, he is autistic and has the olfactory capabilities of a bloodhound. He will be very vocal in his opinion and has never heard of a chav. Wink

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 08/09/2019 21:27

They sound awful whatever they are.
Hate fake smells.

Nat6999 · 08/09/2019 21:29

I buy my wax melts from a lovely lady who makes all kinds of waxy things including candles & melts. All made from soy wax, she makes some amazing blends that smell great. I don't think there is anything chavvy about them, & it's something to look forward to every month to get a wax box with new scents to try.

OrangeCinnamon · 08/09/2019 21:29

@wehttam you'd love me

I live in a New Build
I have most of the same white furniture as Mrs Hinch
I have wax melts
I've been known to brows an argos catalogue

Careful you might catch it!!

Honestly OP you are now being ridiculous you've gone from faux offence at being called chavvy to full on chav calling out. Hope it gives you the laughs you needed hun.

CheshireChat · 08/09/2019 21:29

How about if you make them yourself using essential oils Wink? Am I chavvingly middle class.

PositiveVibez · 08/09/2019 21:29

Well I make my own wax melts and candles and I don't think I'm a chav.

I have one melted away right now and the living room smells absolutely divine, so if that makes me a chance, so be it.

PositiveVibez · 08/09/2019 21:30

*a chav not a chance 😂

JumpyLiz · 08/09/2019 21:31

Pretty sure Yankee Candles do a Baby Wipes and Crisps variant. Might be in their 'Fall Collection'?

Nat6999 · 08/09/2019 21:32

I use electric warmers for my melts, I started with the candle warmers but soon moved on to the electric warmers, I do buy most of them through Yankee Candles because they do some beautiful ones.

FairyDust92 · 08/09/2019 21:32

Well call me Vicky Pollard then because I have a few wax melts.
The melt Kappa smells so nice, have you smelt it OP? 😌

ILearnedItFromABook · 08/09/2019 21:33

I like them, too. (Never bought them anywhere but from local shops. Plenty of variety there, and quite affordable.)

I prefer electric warmers. As others have said, there are no flames to worry about. Also, no need for matches/lighters, no wicks to fuss over, no "tunnelling", etc.

I like that I can turn them on and off as often as I like (which can be a bit messier with candles). They don't take as much room as candles, so I can have an array of fragrance options without needing as much storage space. They're relatively cheap, compared to nice candles, too.

It's a ridiculous thing to be judgmental about, but I suppose it shouldn't come as a surprise that some people are!

JacquettaW · 08/09/2019 21:34

@Jayjaybirdy Apart from that, they are carcinogenic

I didn't know that. My best mate not a chav uses them all the time, will be sure to tell her

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 21:42

I am jesting about the chav stuff really so apologies if it had offended anyone. I was as taken aback by my friend using the word 'chav' as I was at her vehement denouncement of wax melts. That said, I do sound like a snidey cow in a couple of my subsequent responses, and am suitably ashamed of myself for getting drawn in.

FWIW I bought these Yankee ones in Home Bargains, which is where I buy loads of stuff like shampoo and biscuits (and, of course, crisps) so I am clearly not rich myself.

PookieDo · 08/09/2019 21:45

I get your humour OP. I would like a beef monster munch one myself to be honest

Wehttam · 08/09/2019 21:45

@OrangeCinnamon 😛 Darling do the Euros, it sounds like you are trapped in suburban hell. Do you live laugh and love too? 😂

Hun I can send you some of my Diptyque candle empty jars, you could put a tea light in one and maybe some make up brushes in another? X

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 08/09/2019 21:46

@ClemDanFango your post made me laugh out loud 😂

CheshireChat · 08/09/2019 21:46

I can see I'm not the only one who makes them.

Fantababy · 08/09/2019 21:46

Fucking hell Wehttham, that's harsh!

I just can't get over the price of these Scentsy things. You're not too far from a Jo Malone candle by the time you've paid for the lot.

IceColdLemonade · 08/09/2019 21:47

I don't think so but that may mean I am a chav!

360eyes · 08/09/2019 21:50

What a really bizarre judgement to make.

Tell her you bought her the cheesy wotsit and white lightning fragrances for christmas.

LellyMcKelly · 08/09/2019 21:51

As an aside, if you have a cold or a stuffy nose, put a few drops of Olbas Oil in an oil burner in the room you’re in and keep the door closed. It really helps clear your sinuses.

Wehttam · 08/09/2019 21:55

@Fantababy I’m not judging, just commenting on my social observations. 😏

OrangeCinnamon · 08/09/2019 21:57

Trying to work out if I'd prefer to be chavvy or a sneery cow
