Are wax melts chavvy?

This is the opinion of a good friend when I told her that I had recently bought a few melts and a burner: 'Oh don't get into them, they are SO chavvy!'

I just want my house to not stink of baby wipes and crisp crumbs ffs!

I burn a Yankee whenever we are having visitors. I have 3 dogs and would rather the house smelt on a nice candle than wet dog!

TheCraicDealer · 08/09/2019 22:02

I have a scentsy electric wax melt thingy. Occasionally I do an order but I also get from local independent candle makers who sell them. I have a few Dyptique and Jo Malone candles which I use sometimes but after seeing the soot left in my DSis's room from her Yankee Candles the wax melts are a better bet for my lungs and (new build!) white paintwork. If that makes me chavvy, well, I don't give a fuck!

escapade1234 · 08/09/2019 22:04

I hate any fragrance indoors.

Open the windows if your house stinks.

Buy flowers.

TheJellyBabyMadeMeDoIt · 08/09/2019 22:04

I could not give a figurative fuck what some random thinks about smelly wax.

😂

MaybeitsMaybelline · 08/09/2019 22:05

WTAF, I love a Yankee wax melt. I buy them from Asda but only those that smell of clean linen or Cashmere 😁 I light a new one every Friday and the house smells lush.

I thought chavvy houses smelt of vegetable oil and chips. .

CheshireChat · 08/09/2019 22:14

But you can't keep windows constantly open and flowers would work out expensive, wasteful and pretty useless for improving the smell as most varieties no longer have a scent.

Plus, I don't use them because my house smells bad, I use them because I like the house smelling in a certain way.

Woodlandwitch · 08/09/2019 22:20

I associate them with MLM’s

Yankee candles might not be chavvy but are possibly the worst smelling candles I’ve ever experienced

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/09/2019 22:21

I don’t think I know what a wax melt is! I have seen Yankee candles but don’t like them as every one that I have smelled has been too sickly and a bit yuck - just my taste of course. Other candles can be lovely but I veer away from candles in the house as I am worried about accidents.

Woodlandwitch · 08/09/2019 22:21

Agree with @escapade1234

colourlessgreenidea · 08/09/2019 22:27

But you can't keep windows constantly open

Why would the windows need to be constantly open? How bad is the smell indoors?

Plus, I don't use them because my house smells bad, I use them because I like the house smelling in a certain way.

Do you not have any concerns about the chemicals they release? I know we’re all breathing in chemicals to a greater or lesser extent every day, but I’d be concerned about adding more chemicals into the air in my home when it’s avoidable.

HennyPennyHorror · 08/09/2019 22:28

Open the windows regularly, change your bins and wash your soft furnishings OP.

Covering up smells doesn't work anyway.

If you want a lovely scent, put some cinnamon sticks and orange or lemon peel in a pot of simmering water. Smells like Christmas!

Gingerkittykat · 08/09/2019 22:31

Yankee candles were probably fairly middle class a few years ago but now they sell them in Asda for £1 for a votive so hardly high class.

I keep meaning to get a wax melter, much safer when you have cats.

CheshireChat · 08/09/2019 22:34

I try and use essential oils in humidifiers so they're fairly harmless.

justasking111 · 08/09/2019 22:36

Burning scented candles make me cough I have to leave the room. Oils with diffuser sticks are ok. No idea why. Never considered if they were chavvy or not. With two dogs it would be nice sometimes to use them.

Blue7 · 08/09/2019 22:52

I love a candle. Looks pretty and cosy. I've got two dogs and my house doesn't smell. Trust me I have a Mother that would tell me if iit did

YesQueen · 08/09/2019 22:58

I love the ones I use but I've been buying them since 2006, off one person who is definitely not MLM!
I vary from laundry type scents to fruit to mystical. Today is bedtime baby bath which is really relaxing

CheshireChat · 08/09/2019 22:59

colourlessgreenidea oh, I just meant for the PP who were trying to cover pet smells and the like.

SolemnlySwear2010 · 08/09/2019 23:16

I used to use candles/wax melts but found they would irritate my asthma. I bought cold vapour humidifiers from Amazon (about £10 each) and they are fab. Just a few drops of essential oil in each one and the vapour runs for about 6 hours, no need to worry about flames and it turns its self off automatically when the water runs out.

I am using the clean linen oil and my house smells lovely and fresh. I dont have a smelly/dirty house and I open the windows every morning but i am sensitive to food smells etc and the humidifiers help to eliminate them

Nonononon · 08/09/2019 23:26

I got 3 big boxes of "scent-chips" from Holland and Barrett, £1.50 each reduced from £12 😮 12 quid for a box of smelly wax they wanted!
Call me a chav all you like but my house smells luuuuush 😎

ChicCroissant · 08/09/2019 23:45

My DD and I used to love smelling the Holland and Barrett wax melts, we were disappointed when they disappeared from the store - well done on your bargain!

Frangible · 08/09/2019 23:52

Yes, they’re like like air freshener bought by people who like scented pantry liners.

coldfeetallthetime · 08/09/2019 23:54

I kind of get what she means but don’t necessarily agree (just a little disclaimer there).

I associate them with people on Instagram who Zoflora their sink 20 times a day and have grey everything (I like grey!) and silver crushed velvet sofas. I see so many Instagram stories of a melting wax melt.

So I see the association with a certain type of person who people (again, not me!!!) may perceive to be ‘chavvy’.

Lucindainthesky · 08/09/2019 23:57

Chavvier than a white company reed diffuser. Not as chavvy as wiping your radiators with zoflora.

Oakmaiden · 09/09/2019 00:04

I think people who describe things (or other people) as chavvy lack a certain amount of class...

HoomanMoomin · 09/09/2019 00:06

I’m using them to not smell the chicken shit aroma coming from nearby farms. I generally use yankee candle ones, but ones that are single, flower shaped. Tesco also does small variety of them. The orchid one was really nice.
And yes, I’d rather smell all the synthetic smells, than chicken shite au naturel. Hmm
