Are wax melts chavvy?

This is the opinion of a good friend when I told her that I had recently bought a few melts and a burner: 'Oh don't get into them, they are SO chavvy!'

I just want my house to not stink of baby wipes and crisp crumbs ffs!

A wax melt is a piece of scented wax that you melt over a flame to release the fragrance, as opposed to a candle with a wick that you'd light, for those asking

What a faff. What's the advantage?

NoSauce · 08/09/2019 20:26

What are they?!

Nancyjuice7 · 08/09/2019 20:26

I agree with your friend. Buy a nice candle but not a Yankee butter cup birthday cake unicorn pink sparkle one Grin

MagicKingdomDizzy · 08/09/2019 20:27

I would say they are, but only because I associate them with MLMs.

LemonAddict · 08/09/2019 20:27

Yankee Candles are nasty though.

Every house I’ve been using some kind of scented wax is usually doing it to cover up a pet smell or stinky nappies that need putting outside, or a generally dirty house. They really don’t cover it up, they just add a synthetic smell to the dirty smell that’s already there.

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 20:28

Have just Googled 'wax melts' and 'mlm' and
you're right - they are!

You see in my mind Chavs are still in 2006 burberry and tracksuits, drinking cider at the park, decked in chains and swearing at anyone who passes by. Do they then go home and get the tea lights on to fill the house with the scent of pear orchard? Does that make wax melts minging or are they a wee bit chill on the sly?

Jayjaybirdy · 08/09/2019 20:28

All products that scream “my house smells so I’m covering it up with this” are chavvy! Those plug in air fresher things that fart a little bit of perfume out every minute or two are the worst though!

Apart from that, they are carcinogenic. Please only use soya products if you must have “wax melts”.

gorrisandhorace · 08/09/2019 20:29

I think you’re better with a nice vapey pod thing with posh essential oils op. Or maybe a nice candle like a neom

gorrisandhorace · 08/09/2019 20:30

Or a st eval candle. Cheaper . Last ages

Heismyopendoor · 08/09/2019 20:30

Yankee candle also make wax melts though?!?

Some brands out there are MLMbut you can buy other brands in the supermarkets, home bargains, garden centres etc

CurlsandCurves · 08/09/2019 20:30

I think i know where she might have got the ‘chavvy’ idea from.

I follow quite a few cleaning instagram accounts, all quite small, as a result of following a bigger friend of mine (not Mrs Hinch!)

Anyway almost all of them use wax melts, some of them make them too as a small business. And the ones I’m thinking of, none have much money to throw around, their whole account is based around keeping a home nice on a budget.

And I’ve seen some larger insta accounts taking the p out of people using wax melts and making them from home.

So maybe that’s where it stems from? 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

WishMyNameWasWittyNotShitty · 08/09/2019 20:31

In the next town to where I live there are a few people selling the wax melts that imitate famous perfumes/aftershaves, I'm not keen on that idea, especially as they tend to be the heavier scents, but I do burn fruity fragrances at home. I'm not sure whether wax can be chavvy or emo or mosher haha!

PookieDo · 08/09/2019 20:31

They are too much faff for me
You need to clean the holder and buy tea lights. I just light a candle if I really want to

Ok I do not really like the look of any of these Zoflora scented wax melts. They sound like they smell horrendous

ourkidmolly · 08/09/2019 20:31

What's MLM? Confused
Google says multi level marketing? It can't be that.

gorrisandhorace · 08/09/2019 20:31

Yeah multi level marketing

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 20:32

I feel like a whole new world has opened up to me. I had no idea that they were such a thing.

washyourface · 08/09/2019 20:33

It's the scentsy brand that is MLM. Smell great but super overpriced

Zoflorabore · 08/09/2019 20:34

I don’t give a flying fuck but I absolutely love them :) cannot for the life of me see how they are chavvy.

gorrisandhorace · 08/09/2019 20:34

@jamoncrumpet well do take care.
It’s a slippery slope.

DontForgetToDeadhead · 08/09/2019 20:34

Butchyrestingface I live in London - also never heard of these things before.

Maybe we are super posh HmmGrin

AsTheWorldTurns · 08/09/2019 20:34

I don't understand why cleaning has suddenly become fashionable.

PooWillyBumBum · 08/09/2019 20:34

I don’t think I know exactly what a wax melt is but I think Yankee candles smell overpoweringly sweet and generally don’t like the smell of synthetic house scented things (especially the plug in ones...blergh)

DownstairsMixUp · 08/09/2019 20:35

Those plug in air fresher things that fart a little bit of perfume out every minute or two are the worst though!

I agree I hate them things!

AsTheWorldTurns · 08/09/2019 20:36

Can you explain why you'd use this as opposed to a candle?
