Are wax melts chavvy?

This is the opinion of a good friend when I told her that I had recently bought a few melts and a burner: 'Oh don't get into them, they are SO chavvy!'

I just want my house to not stink of baby wipes and crisp crumbs ffs!

Yes

colourlessgreenidea · 08/09/2019 20:46

What does she use in her house?

Maybe nothing.

Do most people use some sort of fragrance-emitting product in their homes? If so, are people not concerned about the chemicals they’re breathing in?

If your house smells bad, open a window. Confused

ourkidmolly · 08/09/2019 20:46

Ha @jamoncrumpet I have never heard of the term MLM. Guess it depends what your sphere of reference is? I've been too busy completing my PhD. Wink

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 20:47

I am starting, and I am ashamed of this, to agree with my friend now, who is howling with laughter at me via text

BLOODY HELL!!!!!!

. . . I haveI a GIFT!!!!!!

Wehttam · 08/09/2019 20:48

They’re a bit ‘new build’ and very Mrs Hinch 🤮 so I’d say bandwagon chavvyish. They’re a sign of potential, someone who has aspirations of Diptyque and Cire Trudon but no budget and doesn’t want The shame of Yankee.

Wax melts are like Prosecco, very ‘hun’. But I don’t judge. 💋😏

Blue7 · 08/09/2019 20:48

Does your Friends make other odd comments or is this a one off?

lotusbell · 08/09/2019 20:49

PookieDo, pop the burner in the freezer once the melted wax has hardened again and after a few minutes it will slide out with no mess. Doesn't work as well with sot as they seem to be softer generally

Propertyofhood · 08/09/2019 20:49

Yeah I think it's the MLM aspect of it that makes it 'chavvy'.

I have a couple of FB friends who have got into it, and they post things about a 'super exciting announcement coming tomorrow' etc. I can't say that I think that wax melts are 'super exciting'.

And the 'Hinching' aspect as well - anything that makes horrid artifical smells in your house (Yankee candles, wax melts, zoflora, diluted Lenor sprayed all over your soft furnishings, Unstoppables in an oil burner gah!) is quite chavvy I guess.

Diptyque candles only for me Wink

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/09/2019 20:49

If your house smells bad, open a window.

I would have a kitchen full of wasps.

I have some of those Reed diffusers bought as gifts. They smell for about 2 hours then I can’t smell them anymore then it all evaporates

I have a dog so I wash things a lot

Blue7 · 08/09/2019 20:50

I don't use them but I wouldn't judge someone who did.

zukiecat · 08/09/2019 20:50

I've recently moved into a new house with my adult DD, we love our burners and wax melts!

My house is not smelly or dirty, I just love the scent wafting round the house.

Always used candles before but we prefer the wax.

gorrisandhorace · 08/09/2019 20:50

@Wehttam that’s a very good summary Grin

Jocasta2018 · 08/09/2019 20:51

I was gifted some wax melts from Yankee Candle which I used once or twice but I didn't really like the smell.

However I did buy some scented tea lights - cinnamon and spicy orange - from Yankee Candle and use them at Xmas in various tea light holders as I love the smell!

Never thought of any of them as being chavvy, just a successful high street store that hopefully doesn't go into administration!!

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 20:51

I think I may just burn the melts I bought and cut and run, there's no way I'm dedicated enough to get into this properly!

Zaphodsotherhead · 08/09/2019 20:51

I think she thinks they are 'chavvy' because, like a PP said, they are usually used to cover up underlying nasty smells. Just open the windows, ffs!

I like a nice reed diffuser myself.

PookieDo · 08/09/2019 20:52

Mrs H has started washing her laundry in 3 in 1 pods, with lenor, with lenor unstoppables. So 3 x the intensity 😂

AnnaMagnani · 08/09/2019 20:53

Possibly if:

They were bought from Scentsy/Partylite/any other MLM

The use of them was inspired by watching Mrs Hinch and is associated with excessive use of Zoflora

Use is justified by saying they are better than plugins they are not or that they are natural/soy/bought from Yankee Candle

I feel the need to wash my mouth out with soap now for judging something as chavvy but honestly, just clean your house like a normal person, without feeling the need to cause air pollution and set off my asthma

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 20:53

Christ I bet Hinch's laundry basket would give me a ten day migraine
