Are wax melts chavvy?

This is the opinion of a good friend when I told her that I had recently bought a few melts and a burner: 'Oh don't get into them, they are SO chavvy!'

I just want my house to not stink of baby wipes and crisp crumbs ffs!

She is just being a snob and probably means 'common' I buy soy wax melts don't you know! They are from a company called 'Cushty' which she would probably baulk at.

I have an electric wax warmer it is no faff at all does make house smell nice.

I love St Eval candles too but they tend to give off a lot of sooty stuff that disagrees with me I think . Therefore only used at Christmas.

gorrisandhorace · 08/09/2019 20:37

No . It’s a mystery

ethelfleda · 08/09/2019 20:37

Erm... what?? Confused
Does chavvy mean something different these days?

Nancyjuice7 · 08/09/2019 20:37

@ourkidmolly IPlayer had a documentary explaining it recently. Herbalife / juice plus / Avon to a degree are MLM.
Usually a company that young women buy a bunch of stock from for say £50, and are supposed to sell it on for £250. Never ends up happening and the woman loses £30-£40. Thats a basic summary

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/09/2019 20:37

I don't think chavvy but I do dislike anything strongly scented like this, they make me wheezy. I'd never tell a friend something they liked was chavvy.

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 20:38

What I'm seeing a lot of, from digging around on Instagram and Facebook selling pages, are wax melts made of familiar scents, like blue Lenor or Zoflora. So there must be some weird Hinchlike cultish thing going on here.

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 20:39

Oh @Disfordarkchocolate - she is a very good friend and it was said in horrified good humour

Thing is you have to be a bit chav to understand what is chavvy Grin
If you’re middle class you’ll think everyone is being judgemental but if you’re a bit chavvy yourself you’ll understand Grin.
Like me.

GeorginaPilot · 08/09/2019 20:39

CurlsandCurves Yes they are thought of as a bit down market because they are a cheap product marketed to a special group I think.

If you like them, so what OP. She was rude to mention it.

ourkidmolly · 08/09/2019 20:39

Am I being really thick? What have wax melts got to do with marketing?

GeorginaPilot · 08/09/2019 20:40

Specific group not special group 😂

ChicCroissant · 08/09/2019 20:40

Wax melts are generally stronger than candles IMO, but burn for less time so more convenient if you don't want to leave something burning for hours. I do use oil burners as well.

I don't associate them with MLM, I like Yankee Candles/was melts though so as they are everywhere in shops it doesn't make the think the wax industry is MLM in general Grin

MayFayner · 08/09/2019 20:40

I just want my house to not stink of baby wipes and crisp crumbs ffs!

You can get fragrance free baby wipes. If you mean used baby wipes, I’d put them in the outside bin more regularly. Crisp crumbs... probably the bin too tbh.

Put the wax melts in there too while you’re at it 😂

jamoncrumpet · 08/09/2019 20:40

You are a bit thick @ourkidmolly if you have got this far in modern society without encountering the term MLM, yes

OP posts:
ourkidmolly · 08/09/2019 20:41

@Nancyjuice7
Thank you for that! Only heard of Avon but get the gist now.

chilledteacher · 08/09/2019 20:42

Grin I read chavvy as chewy. I was genuinely concerned for your welfare for a moment there OP.

GeorginaPilot · 08/09/2019 20:42

ourkidmolly people target certain groups with cheap to produce products via mlm. But they are making a huge mark up. The £s soon add up for the customer because of but one get one free deals etc.

Heismyopendoor · 08/09/2019 20:42

pookie you can get electric warmers. That’s what I have. I don’t need/want a flame with my kids and dog about.

Blueshadow · 08/09/2019 20:42

Chavvy? Not sure. Plenty of people round here use those plug in things and those reeds in a jar thing. I like essential oils in a diffuser or beeswax candles or Ikea peach scented candles. Just a matter of taste really - keep them if you like them.

madcatladyforever · 08/09/2019 20:42

How odd. I had a gift of very expensive wax melts (soya) last Xmas and they smelled fabulous and lasted ages.
I'm guessing glade blue linen wax melts (if such a product existed) might make me turn my nose up.

gorrisandhorace · 08/09/2019 20:43

The thing is if you’ve never heard of them it’s because you don’t spend your weekends perusing home bargains or B&m’s Grin

Tweetingmagpie · 08/09/2019 20:43

They’re a big Mrs hinch thing and even though I like her she is a bit chavvy! Not that it matters though! I’d love some wax melts I like anything that smells nice Smile

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/09/2019 20:43

I don't know . . .

. . . are they Lynx Africa and Blue WKD scented?

PookieDo · 08/09/2019 20:43

I think she probably means if yes you are buying lenor scented wax melts. I don’t know why you would!

I hate the word chav, I am from Essex and it’s a nasty word to describe cheap/common things nowadays

I have nothing against Mrs Hinch at all and do not want another bashing thread but IMO the candles and wax melts craze are batshit crazy and OTT

gorrisandhorace · 08/09/2019 20:44

@SchadenfreudePersonified pretty much.
