To think Boris would win a general election

Well that really, Im a big remainer but I cant help but feel that at an election Bojo would win and win big. Its depressing and I cant see how anyone could vote for him but I see him winning a majority at the polls especially since the remain vote is split.

Eh? He can't even convince his own party and they voted him in!

whattodowith · 05/09/2019 14:15

I think it would be a hung parliament again but ultimately yes, he’d most likely remain in power. I think most leave voters who don’t regret their decision would vote for him because he is ‘promising’ to leave the EU at the end of October and that is ultimately what they want.

Merryoldgoat · 05/09/2019 14:17

I fear you’re correct. I feel like crying every time I see the news.

CendrillonSings · 05/09/2019 14:17

Why do you think Labour is so desperate to block an election, having spent two years whining about how much they want one?

TodaysDate050919 · 05/09/2019 14:17

Eh? He can't even convince his own party and they voted him in!

Yes, but his party aren't the rabble he's playing to/with and who'll be voting for the posh twat.

HoneyIgrewthekids · 05/09/2019 14:18

I have a sick feeling that this is his plan all a long, to make this a people v Parliament election. The ultimate populism.

He has to win more seats though. He’s probably lost a lot of seats in Scotland where he’s unpopular and Ruth Davidson has stepped down; he’s likely to lose some of the more Remainy seats in London and the SE and parts of the SW look likely to go back to the LDs. Where is he going to win?

Would be interesting to hear from other MNers what they think is likely to happen in their own seat. Maybe we could work up a chart and make a prediction between us.

Jizzle · 05/09/2019 14:22

@Cendrilllon

Err, because they know if they agree to it BoJo will somehow contrive to ignore the vote they had last night which stops No Deal. You can't trust that man in the slightest, safest to wait until the threat of no deal is gone and then have the election

Bunglefromrainbow · 05/09/2019 14:22

I haven't looked at the odds (feel free, they do a LOT of research) but I'd imagine that the Tories would be favourites for the biggest party but that a hung parliament would be the most likely outcome of an immediate election. No idea how that would fall, if a Remain coalition would keep Boris out or not, a lot of that would depend on the alliances built up in the campaign.

TodaysDate050919 · 05/09/2019 14:23

The rabble-rousing Express, Mail and Sun love him and the elitist ToryFascist Telegraph loves him so it's probably a done deal. Even the loud-mouthed scouser that runs my chippy loves him, and the shouty ex-miner who comes in the pub.

This country. SadAngry

Massively depends on whether young people actually get out there and vote. A lot of them are more politically energised than ever before, and that could have an impact. If not, it'll be a hung parliament with Tories probably scraping something together to stay in power. Why people would want to vote for BoJo and his gang is beyond me, but I think those mentioning the right wing press are right - it has a lot to answer for.

Topseyt · 05/09/2019 14:27

I hope he wouldn't win, but fear he might.

I think there is the potential for another hung parliament.

Alsohuman · 05/09/2019 14:27

@CendrillonSings knows exactly why the Labour Party is refusing an immediate GE and is being disingenuous.

whattodowith · 05/09/2019 14:27

My area is a safe labour seat but the majority voted leave so I don’t think they’d choose labour if we have another election. I can’t see them ever voting Tory so I reckon it’d be Brexit party 🤮.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/09/2019 14:27

Two days ago you gov had conservatives at 35% and Labour at 25%.

The political scene seems to be changing hourly though so who knows.

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 05/09/2019 14:28

Im a big remainer but I cant help but feel that at an election Bojo would win and win big

I think its impossible to call because of so many variables

  • if we leave and then there is an election, that will pull the rug out from under the Brexit party.
  • if leave doesn't happen, Brexit party could either do bizarrely well and return MPs in a flood if they can field enough candidates or may split the vote in safe seats - esp Conservative seats and allow the next highest mainstream party in - in many places this would be Lib Dems but in some places Labour.
  • there seems to be a populist sense on the streets that BJ is very popular and the Brexit (majority in the referendum) voters are going to be out in force and voting against Remainer MPs in seats where the referendum vote was Brexit.
-but you have to factor in that a lot of younger people have come on stream as voters and seem to be very politically engaged and more likely to be Remain.

It's a crazy world we live in.

Paintedmaypole · 05/09/2019 14:28

I think voting will be more fragmented and not on 2 party lines so it is hard to predict. He may get in if Lib dems, SNP, Plaid Cymru etc take Labour votes but I don't think he will have a working majority. He is very disliked. Perhaps libdems will get some of the conservative vote but he will take votes back from the Brexit party. It won't be straightforward. Expect a huge media bashing of Jeremy Corbyn.

Baguetteaboutit · 05/09/2019 14:31

Yes. I suspect he might win. His incompetence has no bearing on his popularity.

Alsohuman · 05/09/2019 14:32

I fully anticipate the Remain parties to agree to only stand one candidate in marginal constituencies to avoid splitting the vote. The Brexit Party has said it will stand a candidate in every constituency which will split the leave vote. Add to that Corbyn being an excellent campaigner, whatever else you might think of him, and the race could be anyone’s.

whattodowith · 05/09/2019 14:33

He is very disliked.

I don’t think he is, I think people think he’s oafish and amusing.

Alsohuman · 05/09/2019 14:37

Anyone who’s given the news even a passing glance in the last week would agree he’s oafish. Amusing? Terrifying more like.

sunshinesupermum · 05/09/2019 14:38

Hung Parliament whoever wins.

Paintedmaypole · 05/09/2019 14:39

He is very disliked by most of the people I know but I know that isn't representative of the whole country. Sadly alsohuman I don't think that will happen, I think the vote will be split.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 05/09/2019 14:39

I can't see how he won't, given the absolute shitshow of Opposition.

jesuschristwtf · 05/09/2019 14:41

I think he will. Where I live is a labour stronghold and that won’t change unfortunately.
