To think Boris would win a general election

Well that really, Im a big remainer but I cant help but feel that at an election Bojo would win and win big. Its depressing and I cant see how anyone could vote for him but I see him winning a majority at the polls especially since the remain vote is split.

Corbyn is not far left. He seems it because the overton window has moved so far to the right.

Yes, I'm sure the mass confiscation of private property wouldn't be far left at all ... to someone on the far left! Grin

Toooldtobearsed2 · 08/09/2019 19:55

It would help if people called him 'Johnson'. Boris is FAR too affectionate a name.

No one calls May or Corbyn or even bloody Blair by their given names.

He is Johnson. Not Boris. Not BoJo. Not quirky funky PM. Johnson.

Moanranger · 08/09/2019 19:57

I think the electoral calculus is v complex, national polls not helpful, as it will be battled constituency by constituency. Anyone’s guess.
No huge fan of Corbyn, BUT:
1.He has consistently performed better than BJ last week in Parliament

  1. He campaigns well.
  2. Popular with young voters.
Critical will be him doing what he does well, and leaving complex matters/policy/etc to his team. Labour have struck me as pretty disciplined, esp in comparison to Tories (ERG during May’s time, for example?) But they need a better comms strategy to stop being continually wrong-footed in the press. I am not a socialist, but inequality & housing are Huge issues & need addressing and Tories won’t. Let the Tories be the party that campaigns on protecting bankers bonuses!
noodlenosefraggle · 08/09/2019 20:00

He will win because leavers will vote for him to get a strong Parliament. I only hope Labour seats aren't lost to the Brexit Party because of it.I'm in a Tory area that voted remain, just. It's a key Labour target and it may well swing to them. But we are a remain constituency in a remain city. We are surrounded by Tory leavers, so one seat lost, about 10 retained.

AsTheWorldTurns · 08/09/2019 20:01

It’s amusing how confident some are that Boris is done. He still has an excellent chance of beating the Labour cowards when they are finally forced into an election.

I agree, and I have a niggling feeling that he's got something up his sleeve for tomorrow.

People view Johnson through their Brexit prism. Remainers think he's humiliated, whereas Brexiteers view him as doggedly committed to the cause.

Far right demonstrators stomping all over the Cenotaph yesterday was sooooooooo much more respectful than Corbyn wearing a rain coat to the Cenotaph last November right? Hmm Hmm Hmm

Oh dear, do you really want to do down that road? Have a look at what the far left was doing days after the Conservatives had the temerity to win a democratic election in 2015:

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/war-memorial-vandalised-anti-tory-protesters-spray-fk-tory-scum-during-anti-government-protests-10239105.html

The Monument to the Women of World War II, on Whitehall in London, was spray painted with the words "f**k Tory scum" during an anti-austerity protest in London yesterday.

Whoops - were you equally offended when the far left were doing that?

Alsohuman · 08/09/2019 20:41

Yes.

HelenaDove · 08/09/2019 20:50

Yes i was I remember a thread on here at the time

Think there's some truth in that - I voted Remain, but I'm not seeing him as humiliated - I come from an area where it's heavily Leave (and Labour!) but people saying they see BJ as the one to get the job done.

So true smile. Just read an article in a Canadian newspaper and they call him a clown car! Perfect description of how he is driving this country.

ZenNudist · 08/09/2019 23:33

The parliamentary maths haven't changed that much. Young people will vote corbyn. Labour voters might defect to brexit party. Tories will lose in Scotland. I reckon hung parliament. Either Labour or conservative we will get a brexit. I think corbyn is best off out of it at the moment. Let BoJo fuck it up. The only way out is through. The country has to go to the dogs. It may never return.

Bahlindah · 09/09/2019 01:57

I hope you're right but I don't think so. I think we're having our Trump moment where conservatism gives way to extremist nationalism and, unfortunately, it will win.

Anyone remember what it was like 5 years ago when hardly anyone gave a crap about our EU membership?

Kazzyhoward · 09/09/2019 08:40

Anyone remember what it was like 5 years ago when hardly anyone gave a crap about our EU membership?

If that was true, Farage and UKIP wouldn't have been growing popularity.

The in/out of EU issue was huge in Blair/Browns terms of office. Blair had his "rub the noses of the right in diversity" and Brown had his "bigotted woman" statements.

Long before that, there were divisions in both main parties about the EU - back as far at Thatcher, she had to deal with the pro-anti factions in her party.

The referendum only happened because of ever increasing public unhappiness with the EU, which is why Farage/UKIP became popular.

Alsohuman · 09/09/2019 08:56

Nobody outside Westminster gave a shit about the EU before Farage started stirring the pot.

Figmentofmyimagination · 09/09/2019 09:01

If Labour can get the university vote out (not a great time of year) and if they have managed to persuade significantly more renters onto the electoral register, they might stand a chance of stopping Johnson getting a majority, but the way the electoral system works is weighted in favour of the Conservative vote and anyway the polls for Corbyn are not encouraging.

I’m hoping for a government in which a left of centre alliance is formed across the other parties.

AngryFeminist · 09/09/2019 09:02

@HoneyIgrewthekids I agree with what you said upthread:

I have a sick feeling that this is his plan all a long, to make this a people v Parliament election. The ultimate populism.

Particularly as Dominic Cummings is behind him. He ran the Brexit campaign on that toxic mix of ambiguous, right-wing 'take back control' sloganing and pure lies re NHS etc. I reckon he is thinking 12 steps ahead always - recent events have purged the party of anyone likely to challenge Boris from withing and shown him exactly who his enemies are. I think he would win on a similar campaign and the new hard right government would soon see Brexit was the least of our troubles.

AsTheWorldTurns · 09/09/2019 10:40

Nobody outside Westminster gave a shit about the EU before Farage started stirring the pot.

Obviously not true.

Alsohuman · 09/09/2019 11:13

If it’s so obvious perhaps you’d like to supply some evidence @Astheworldturns.
