To think Boris would win a general election

Well that really, Im a big remainer but I cant help but feel that at an election Bojo would win and win big. Its depressing and I cant see how anyone could vote for him but I see him winning a majority at the polls especially since the remain vote is split.

If Labour had a moderate leader, I agree they would have won the last election, and would certainly win the next one. I just wish Corbyn would have the decency to put his ego aside and the moderates in his party had more clout to make it happen.

My dearest wish is that Bojo loses an election, but I fear that he’ll win when so many also despise Corbyn and it’s a “lesser of two evils” choice for so many.

I’ll wait to see what the best tactical vote is for a remain coalition...

Alsohuman · 05/09/2019 15:10

The right doesn’t hold its nose, though, does it? That’s why Johnson has lost four votes in two days. And why Jo Johnson has walked.

TodaysDate050919 · 05/09/2019 15:13

That’s not true - only 25% say they’re voting Labour.

Sorry, I had my previous post in mind and there was no reason for you to have it in yours.

I wasn't referencing any polls or implying likely voting intentions based purely on intelligence. My point was that people of lower-than-average intelligence tend to follow the direction that the popular press points them in. And self-serving, vicious twats tend to follow the direction that the Telegraph points them in. When the two come together, along with the 'privately-funded' social media campaigns, it's a perfect storm.

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 15:14

Probably a hung Parliament again if I had to guess, but it's really hard to call until we know the level of cooperation between the Remain parties and whether the Tories and Brexit Party will work together. A lot of people will vote tactically.

TodaysDate050919 · 05/09/2019 15:15

He'll walk it

Exactly. Sad

Kazzyhoward · 05/09/2019 15:17

Corbyn has lost all credibility which is why, after repeatedly wanting a GE, he has suddenly opposed it when given the chance. He's running scared.

TodaysDate050919 · 05/09/2019 15:20

We need posters of him all over the place, looking confused and worried in the HoC and with LIAR emblazoned across them. Maybe some other, more mumsnety, words as well. Grin

If he wants it about him (like the fascists) then we need to make it about him.

Envy NOT envy

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 15:20

I will hear many things against Corbyn, but it's pretty obvious why he wouldn't agree to a GE now, and sensible too. Because Boris couldn't be trusted not to fuck with the date, and Corbyn has belatedly realised that Labour are more reliant on Remain than Leave support.

Alsohuman · 05/09/2019 15:21

He’s not running scared. He quite rightly doesn’t trust Johnson.

BeerandBiscuits · 05/09/2019 15:25

As PPs have pointed out, he won't agree to a GE before 31Oct because Johnson would be able to go ahead with a no deal Brexit if he won.

MoonageDaydreamz · 05/09/2019 15:25

Yes if he can get a GE now/soon I think he'll win.

Outside the bubble of Westminster / london / the most vocal people on twitter people (both brexiters and the normal non-frothing remainers) know that Brexit just needs to happen for the country to progress and move on, and feel no deal is preferable to this latest proposed prevarication. The overarching feeling is 'just get on with it'.

Boris, whatever you say, has been decisive and is doing his best to deliver that, which for a lot of people is like a fog (or fug) clearing after the gutless May years.

BunchMunch · 05/09/2019 15:29

Corbyn has been incessantly calling for a GE for ages. He knows he'll likely get trounced so is now hesitating in agreeing.

I think there'll be a big swing to the Lib Dems from remainers but overall the Cons possibly in coalition with BXP will get a majority.

Corbyn is incredibly unpopular and I shudder to think of Mcdonnell as Chancellor.

Yanbu op - Boris will most likely win a GE.

CendrillonSings · 05/09/2019 15:31

As PPs have pointed out, he won't agree to a GE before 31Oct because Johnson would be able to go ahead with a no deal Brexit if he won.

So you admit Corbyn’s afraid of how people will vote? If no deal is so bad, and Corbyn’s so awesome, then he should win easily and stop no deal as PM, right?

Right?

Allington · 05/09/2019 15:31

It is difficult to gauge how the purge of The Twenty-One will play, though. Yes, many have said they won't stand in another election, but some have said that if they are backed by their constituency assoc then they will. They have the right to appeal against being expelled from the party, and the fact that they have been expelled after one vote against the Con government, and other MPs (e.g. Rees Mogg) have done so over 100 times without any penalty at all is a factor.

Even if their appeal fails it will play out with full publicity - along with 'I voted according to my conscience and against my own interest, just like the UK in 1939, standing alone for what is right...' They can also stand as independent candidates and split the Con vote.

With so many variables the first past the post system means every constituency is its own little jigsaw puzzle.

Topseyt · 05/09/2019 15:32

I don't think Corbyn is running scared. He has more options in the Commons than Boris does right now and will play to that. He is able to gather more cross-party support (using the opposition parties alone) than Boris is right now, especially regarding Brexshit.

Boris is fast running out of options as he now has no working majority at all, with or without the support of the DUP.

lubeybooby · 05/09/2019 15:33

He's absolutely vile to the core which seems to be a good thing these days for the hoodwinked and ignorant masses so he'd probably win

WhoKnewBeefStew · 05/09/2019 15:34

I think everyone is so fed up and it feels like the government have been faffing about for too long. Boris actually seems to be doing something, rightly or wrongly, he's doing SOMETHING, and the alternative is too bad to consider. I think he'll win, and he'll win big.

Kazzyhoward · 05/09/2019 15:34

Cons possibly in coalition with BXP

If the Tories stand on a proper Brexit platform, there'll be no BXP - hence no need for a coalition. BXP wouldn't get any seats - they'd be irrelevant.

Manontry · 05/09/2019 15:35

Why do you think Labour is so desperate to block an election, having spent two years whining about how much they want one?

This. Of course the Tories will win.

CendrillonSings · 05/09/2019 15:35

Boris is fast running out of options as he now has no working majority at all, with or without the support of the DUP.

Actually, since Corbyn is too much of a coward to No Confidence him, Boris’ effective majority is gigantic Smile

kateandme · 05/09/2019 15:36

this scares me too.he is trump in the uk.he is smart and more like manipulative and knows exactly how and what to say to "certain"people to goad and make then vote for the lis he spurts.you can tell when hes talking the people at hom will be open eyes lapping it up the certain phrases he uses.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/09/2019 15:36

So you admit Corbyn’s afraid of how people will vote? If no deal is so bad, and Corbyn’s so awesome, then he should win easily and stop no deal as PM, right?

Well David Cameron was a nobber and Brexit was a fucking stupid idea and people voted for that so... people will vote against their best interests. Led by the nose by a press that has total contempt for it's customers. Corbyn (and I'm not a fan) is rightly making sure there is insurance against losing, something DC could have done but didn't, because he was an arrogant arse.

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 15:36

In respect of the purged MPs, at least a couple of them potentially have some constituency backing and we have to consider the possibility that they'll run as Independent Conservatives against a party candidate. Remain parties might decide not to run in those areas, and even if they do then the Conservative vote will be split.

Manontry · 05/09/2019 15:39

Also Corbyn's face yesterday when he thought he might have to sort out Brexit! He's never wanted to do it. If Labour did get in, Nigel Farage would be our next PM.

kateandme · 05/09/2019 15:40

to people saying hes actually doing something.but hes not.hes lying and promising things the rest havent done because they know its not safe for our country to do so and not in the best interest.
ffks his own brother quit today becasue he has trouble with lyalty to his family against loyalty to doing whats best for the country interests.
