To think Boris would win a general election

Well that really, Im a big remainer but I cant help but feel that at an election Bojo would win and win big. Its depressing and I cant see how anyone could vote for him but I see him winning a majority at the polls especially since the remain vote is split.

So you admit Corbyn’s afraid of how people will vote? If no deal is so bad, and Corbyn’s so awesome, then he should win easily and stop no deal as PM, right?

Right?

No.

This assumes the GE would be held early enough that No Deal could be stopped by whoever the new PM is. But it could be delayed beyond that, once agreed. Parliament don't get to choose the date. If Boris delays the election long enough for No Deal to happen automatically, it wouldn't matter if Corbyn got every single vote cast. We would still have crashed out.

Kazzy
I agree. If the Cons stand pledging they will finally leave the EU then they will win, and win big as others have said.
Its going to be a single issue election. If Boris plays it as the people vs parliament then yes he'll walk it.
Corbyn knows this hence the prevarication.

ilovesooty · 05/09/2019 15:47

It's entirely possible whatever the result of an election that Johnson might lose his own seat.

LoveSatsumas · 05/09/2019 15:52

I certainly hope he would win. I'd vote for him.

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 15:54

Interesting point. His majority isn't actually that massive. Only 5000. PMs are usually in much safer seats than that, but of course he wasn't PM when he last stood. If the other parties have any sense they'll only run one Stop Boris candidate again. Though I guess if that were hinted at, he might run scared be parachuted unto a safer seat by the party.

CendrillonSings · 05/09/2019 15:56

And? If he wins a majority then a Tory MP would be chosen to be PM by the same membership that chose Boris. More likely a loyal MP in a safe seat would resign, retire to the Lords, and thus trigger a by-election that would enable Boris to win the seat. Big deal.

HoneyIgrewthekids · 05/09/2019 15:56

Did anyone see the Times article about how Dominic Cummings is trying to start a culture war around issues like trans rights to win Northern Constituencies. Similar to the southern strategy in tbe USA.

DP and I were talking about this the other night.
I think against Corbyn Boris would walk it, but against someone like Keir Starmer, I really don’t know.

Snog · 05/09/2019 15:59

My city is safe labour and voted by a large majority to remain.
The Lib Dem's are the second most popular party here.

historysock · 05/09/2019 16:01

He would win where I live unfortunately. It's never been anything other than conservative and there seem to be a lot of people that voted leave and who are quite nationalist in their views... and who 'just want to leave'. I despair, I really do.

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 16:02

The more I think about it, the more I think Boris might be moved pre-emptively to a safer seat, but the idea that a sitting PM losing his seat wouldn't be a big deal is fucking handstand.

TodaysDate050919 · 05/09/2019 16:03

I've got an advert for 'Bottomless Dough Balls' running alongside this thread. Grin I hope it was the discussion of Boris that triggered that.

SleepyKat · 05/09/2019 16:04

I guess Boris has the choice of some safer Tory seats now he’s kicked so many MPs out (and his brother has left).

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 16:06

Apparently the safest Tory seat in the country is Christchurch with a 25k majority. If I were Christopher Chope I'd watch my back!

Namechangeforbrexit · 05/09/2019 16:06

his own brother quit today becasue he has trouble with lyalty to his family against loyalty to doing whats best for the country interests.

Jo Johnson is MP for Orpington, where the majority voted Leave. Perhaps Jo, like Philip Lee who was about to be deselected, was jumping before pushed (by his constituency, not by Boris).

If Boris delays the election long enough for No Deal to happen automatically, it wouldn't matter if Corbyn got every single vote

Corbyn has long wanted Brexit. I think he voted No in the first referendum in 1975. I suspect that he wants Boris to take us out of the EU but doesn't want to admit this.

Paintedmaypole · 05/09/2019 16:09

Corbyn is not running scared. Like the leaders of the other opposition parties and Tony Blair he can spot a trap and a manipulative attempt to push through a no deal brexit when he sees one. It is only the timing that is an issue. Posters criticising Corbyn are being vague about which policies they object to, except the person who said he won't allow anyone to leave over 125K, which isn't accurate as it is about when tax will be due.

MerryChristmasHarry · 05/09/2019 16:09

I don't think Corbyn is an actual Remainer but he does want to stop No Deal at this point in time. For purely pragmatic reasons, rather than because he thinks it's the right thing to do.

LoveGrowsWhere · 05/09/2019 16:10

^^ Though I guess if that were hinted at, he might run scared be parachuted into a safer seat by the party.

Also heard on local rumour mill.

Redwinestillfine · 05/09/2019 16:12

He will, but he'll loose seats and have to fight for everything. It won't help Brexit but maybe they'll learn how to compromise?

Sotiredofthislife · 05/09/2019 16:12

Agreed, OP. It is all too terrifying.

RedSheep73 · 05/09/2019 16:14

I'm sure you are right, that is his plan, replace the sensible side of the Tory party with Brexit nutter (hence the purge) and get a bit enough majority to force whatever he likes through and trash the country completely. I just hope to God we can stop him.0

Saucery · 05/09/2019 16:14

An alliance with the Brexit Party is my line in the sand and as he seems determined to drive out traditional and moderate Conservatives from the party then I’m rethinking my vote. To what, fuck knows, but I’ll never put my name to elevating Farage and his followers to further responsibility.

360eyes · 05/09/2019 16:16

TodaysDate050919

The rabble-rousing Express, Mail and Sun love him and the elitist ToryFascist Telegraph loves him so it's probably a done deal. Even the loud-mouthed scouser that runs my chippy loves him, and the shouty ex-miner who comes in the pub.

I agree. Some of the newspaper headlines this morning were totally juvenile (a bit like JRM lounging about the house of commons - what an immature bell-end), but that's how it is in this country, they can't think for themselves and base their vote on soundbites and pictures of Jeremy Corbyn's face on a chicken. Too blind to see that the people in authority who want a no deal are most likely in it for their own gain and not for their best interests.

My father, a sun reader, said he voted for leave because he was patriotic, but couldn't elaborate what that meant. He is desperate for a council flat as he is at retirement age, yet thinks voting conservative will somehow make this more likely. Hate to say this, but, he's a bloody idiot.

Saucery · 05/09/2019 16:18

Although anything that stops the TRA juggernaut crushing the very meaning of the word ‘female’ is tempting, even if it is whipped up by the execrable Cummings. Labour, Lib Dem and Greens would do well to listen to what women are saying about the erosion of their right to safety.
