To think this is the end of the Tories

…..as we know them.

None of them can agree with one another. It seems that there will be utter chaos when the Election is called as their Manifesto will be impossible to write.

Actual interview starts at about 14.30. Before that is a refreshing 14 minutes of Corbyn bashing.

Figmentofmyimagination · 04/09/2019 18:46

The uk has always had a strong authoritarian streak as well as being very deferential to your ‘betters’. I’m sure this won’t go away soon - although maybe it will die out with generational change.

whattodowith · 04/09/2019 18:47

Probably not but we can live in hope...

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 04/09/2019 18:51

When the Election is announced I shall be interested to see which parties the Tory rebels stand for (apart from the grandees who are retiring).

I distrust both JC and BJ but I loathe John McDonell. I don’t believe his policies and views are good for this country. Agree. he's a sinister man

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 04/09/2019 19:00

Mrs. Thatcher would have handled this situation much better than BJ is currently doing.

It's a miserable way for Kenneth Clarke to end his career.

And Nicholas Soames. The irony of his grandfather being Johnson’s hero - I bet Churchill’s rotating in his grave now.

BertrandRussell · 04/09/2019 19:42

Actually, i’ve just re listened to the Starmer interview I linked to. It absolutely fascinating considering what’s happened since. It was done at the time of the Tory leadership elections. I really recommend it.

DontFeedTheCatCake · 04/09/2019 19:47

If There is an election, and Boris wins, one good thing outcome will be that it will surely lead to the end of Corbyn. Politics is always healthier with a credible opposition leader.

Alsohuman · 04/09/2019 19:49

We are clutching at straws now. Corbyn’s rediscovered his mojo this week.

noodlenosefraggle · 04/09/2019 20:00

I don't know. I think he's ended his career with a great deal of respect from people on all sides, although he probably feels very upset at being treated so poorly. He stood up for his principles and put country before party . His leaving, and Nicholas Soames says more about the current government than it does about them.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/09/2019 20:17

Kenneth Clarke was the only Tory MP to defy the whip and not vote to trigger Article 50

Don’t underestimate how the Tories will pull together when the need is there

And he has never supported a second referendum I think many are now seeing the second referendum and no deal issue as the same it isn’t. Corbyn is not supporting a second referendum he just isn’t supporting leaving without a deal

DontFeedTheCatCake · 04/09/2019 20:22

Disagree about Corbyn and his mojo, people are deeply distrusting of him, McDonnell and Momentum.

AngryFeminist · 04/09/2019 20:32

I think it's the end of the Tories as we know them but not in a good way, which I say as a card carrying socialist. BoJo always intended to go for broke on a general election I think. The vote last night served well to show him who his enemies are and consolidated a hardcore team of brexiteering right wingers around him. I have a horrible feeling he will win a snap election on a hideously ironic 'parliament vs people' ticket and pushing through a no deal Brexit will be only the first of our woes.

I really REALLY hope I'm wrong.

TriciaH87 · 04/09/2019 20:36

Farage for pm. Least he will get the job done.

Alsohuman · 04/09/2019 20:41

Corbyn promised a second referendum in the Commons yesterday. He was on fire yesterday and again today. I still don’t want him as PM but he’s actually behaving like a decent leader of the opposition at the moment. He’s certainly giving Boris grief.

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 04/09/2019 20:43

I am not personally afraid of JC being the Opposition leader.

But is he going to persuade the electorate that he is a credible Leader of the Opposition? Unfortunately I don't think so.

A lot can happen in a few weeks and he’s at his best on the campaign trail. It might be a mistake to underestimate him.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/09/2019 22:18

Corbyn then said about negotiating for the UK to leave with a deal (which he says more often than not as he stands by now he people’s vote) rather than leaving with a no deal

He absolutely does not support a second referendum as he didn’t support remaining in the EU and he struggles to take a definite stance

Labour might promise one in a be GE but that will be against his views, against what he has said before and the risk of losing a lot of voters and we know how well the Brexit party have done they can not be ignored

justasking111 · 04/09/2019 22:22

It occurred to me that BJ now does not have to worry about getting out on time. Anyone who criticises him he can deflect and point to others whenever something goes wrong. Is he that clever or is it dumb luck?

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 04/09/2019 23:24

This worries me. The Brexit Party really cannot be ignored. Will the electorate really vote for them? I think they may well do, as parliament disintegrates further and further.

Alsohuman · 04/09/2019 23:27

@EnthusiasmIsDisturbed, I sat watching Corbyn on TV yesterday and heard him promise another referendum with my own ears.

ReanimatedSGB · 05/09/2019 00:14

The Brexit Party are far, far more frightening than Corbyn-led Labour, They are the fascists who are coming for your livelihoods, your wellbeing, your children, as well as for your friends and neighbours.
You might think you will be OK, even if enough stupid people vote for them. You might think that because you own your own home and have a couple of months' worth of savings, that it won't be so bad. You might think, even if you don't want to say it out loud, that you will be OK whatever happens because you're either white or 'respectable.'.

But you won't be, unless you are wealthy enough to be part of the 1%.
