Am frittering away my afternoon re-watching Buffy, which I used to love. And as I’m watching, I’m realising that I am seeing a man who is 250 years old climbing in the window of a 16 year old girl in the middle of the night, and I’m thinking that’s pretty grim. She has teddy bears on her bed.

True but applying the “half your age plus seven” rule when you’re 250 would probably make it quite hard to get some.

Grambler · 03/09/2019 15:23

He pays the price though, doesn't he?

herculepoirot2 · 03/09/2019 15:23

That is true. But couldn’t he get just a bit closer to his own age? Buffy’s mum? Miss Calendar?

Does he or does Giles pay the price when he murders his girlfriend?

gamerwidow · 03/09/2019 15:26

Ps I still would obvs but Angel is a bit of an arse all round. Never takes responsibility for anything.

Shoxfordian · 03/09/2019 15:29

He's so pretty though..

herculepoirot2 · 03/09/2019 15:30

Very pretty. But questionable.

BlackCatSleeping · 03/09/2019 15:30

That’s kind of the whole point of vampires though. Young, innocent virgins. Bad men coming in their windows at night and sinking their pointy teeth into them.

Tableclothing · 03/09/2019 15:34

I found when I rewatched Buffy it wasn't quite the feminist utopia it had appeared to be when I was 16. Felt quite Sad about it.

🤣 True.

It would make quite the relationships post.
A lot of 90s teen TV had some shocking social messaging, on rewatch.

A lot of the heroes and sexy leads of 90s shows are actually grumpy, abusive, sulky, stonewalling fucks.

Don't even get me started on Ross Geller. We'll be here all night.

"I'm the holidaaaaay aaaarmadillo!"

You are, Ross. You really are.

TheDarkPassenger · 03/09/2019 15:37

Sometimes there are things you shouldn’t rewatch. I’m too scared to rewatch friends in full and ruin all the characters for myself

Pukkatea · 03/09/2019 15:37

This is why that 'curse' thing was SO STUPID. Fine, punish Angelus by giving him a soul and conscience so he suffers caring about all the evil stuff he did. But as soon as he's happy, take it away so he's free to kill people guilt-free again! Yeah well done on that one, thought that through.

nespressowoo · 03/09/2019 15:39

I was OBSESSED with David Boreanaz. Beautiful man. Loved the spin-off until he had his son 'Connor' then it just got mental.

thecatsthecats · 03/09/2019 15:40

I never 'got' Angel as a teen in the same way I 'got' Spike.

Now I appreciate his dry humour a little more, but I'm still a Spike girl.

As humans:
Angel - Dull blarney Irish stereotype. Meh.
Spike - Daft, wet, but well intentioned. Could do with learning what no means, but one to recognise a girl's effulgence.

As no soul vampires:
Angel - a pure monster.
Spike - well, quite a lot of a monster, but one who, in his devotion to both Drusila and Buffy, had a bit more heart to him. And he was funny, and non-apocalyptical.

As ensouled vamps:
Spike is still funnier.

Soz Angel, it's 3/3 for Spike.

"I'm the holidaaaaay aaaarmadillo!"

Also re-watching Friends. Untold horror there.

Aderyn19 · 03/09/2019 15:44

I explained this away to myself by deciding Angel's maturity levels stopped aging at the same time as his body did when he was turned. So he would be forever in this 20s emotionally and mentally.
It's a bit iffy, but I still would Wink

Spike is my favourite though!

Aderyn19 · 03/09/2019 15:45

Connor was a creepy little fucker!

Sammi38 · 03/09/2019 15:48

Ahh Buffy! Proper 90s classic! Loved Angel, never watched the spin off though.

Ross gellar! What a nasty sulky piece of work he was. Always reminded me of a spoilt toddler constantly chucking his toys out of the pram.

Was there ever anything redeeming about him? Whenever I watch friends reruns he always gives me the proper rage!

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 03/09/2019 15:49

Angel definitely an arse and a selfish bastard.

Spike so much better. Without a soul Angel is a killing machine, stalker, obsessive, cruel. Spike without a soul actually retains the capacity to work with others, when he first works with Buffy against Angel ity is because he recognises that he actually quite likes the world and having fun in it. When he has the chip he begins to do things because they are the right thing to do, not just because Buffy makes him. When he falls for her and then tries to rape her he realises that his lack of soul prevents him from being able to curb his vampire impulses all the time and he recognises that he needs his soul back and he goes and fights for it, the vampire chose the soul. Angel had his forced on him and the vampire within is always screaming to get out.

I may have spent too much timer thinking about it.

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 03/09/2019 15:50

In other questions, how do vampires smoke when they don't breathe?

How do they not have huge pudding feet if their heart doesn't pump blood? Their venous return must be non existent. And similarly how do they get erections without blood flow?

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 03/09/2019 15:51

Yup, love Buffy and Angel, both shows were awesome, but definite creep factor there sadly.
And even more so in light of some of Whedon's alleged behaviour with young actresses.

herculepoirot2 · 03/09/2019 15:53

And similarly how do they get erections without blood flow?

That old fan fic fave. 😂

thecatsthecats
Agree so much.
As an adult I don't really understand why we should prefer angel over spike. The only thing stopping angel from being an unfeeling psychopathic monster was his soul. Spike obviously did incredibly bad things but he chose to be good and chose to love even before he chose to have his soul back. Surely that means that ultimately Spike is the "better" man???

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 03/09/2019 15:57

TheStakeIsNotThePower

I see we're on the same page re spike.

I always liked to think that he went to get his soul back because he knew what he had done to Buffy was horrific and knew that with a soul he would have to feel it too.

Ooh I may need to start a rewatch.

Juells · 03/09/2019 16:00

I was OBSESSED with David Boreanaz. Beautiful man.

Yes, he was gorgeous! IIRC he was 'discovered' while waiting at a bus stop.

Spike was great too. The most convincing British accent of any American actor ever.

I mentioned Lorne in another thread earlier today, as he died very young from heart disease brought on by an untreated dental infection :(
