To think girls can wear clothes with dinosaurs on?

I was looking at baby clothes for my baby with my family, I don’t know the sex. I pick out a nice set with dinosaurs on, I think it was green. DSis says “what if it’s a girl?” I said girls can wear dinosaur patterned clothes too?! DM thought I was going “too far”. Am I BU? Or are they being insane? Would you dress your daughter in clothes with dinosaurs on?

When we were away a few weeks ago I stuck my head into Joules as they'd got a sale on. DS2 was with me and found a stripy t-shirt in the children's section with a unicorn made of sequins on the front and asked if he could have it. DH looked at me and shrugged, I shrugged and said fine, he wears it whenever it's clean and nothing terrible happens.

Clothes are for people. So long as you're human, wear what you like.

theruffles · 03/09/2019 13:46

YANBU! My DD has clothes with dinosaurs on but I've also brought her ones from the 'boy's section' that are blue and covered in planets and rocket ships. Girls don't always have to be dressed in pink and frills and unicorns (the latter being a personal peeve!)

Purplerain16 · 03/09/2019 13:47

I saw a little girl in a dinosaur dress yesterday, painting a trex money box! I absolutely loved it.

So much so, I bought a dinosaur dress 😂

TrixieFranklin · 03/09/2019 13:47

I bought this set for my baby before I knew what we were having, didn't think twice about it.

Obviously dress your baby in what you want but...the only way I see it from your family's point of view is when your baby is little you may find you want to dress exclusively in "boy clothes" or "girl clothes" because until it is obvious that your baby is a boy or girl you spend a fair bit of time telling old ladies at the shop what your baby is. Even though it shouldn't bother you, when you are an extremely proud new parent it does weirdly piss you off when people think your baby who (to you) is obviously a beautiful baby girl is actually a boy and vice versa. I put DS in a yellow top once and had a health visitor say "Oh isn't she gorgeous", I replied "Yes, HE is" but she didn't notice and said "What is your name little lady?", she was a bit confused when I said Henry. It happened frequently enough at the supermarket / park as to annoy me into usually putting him in a blue top for the first few months, but maybe there are just more annoying old ladies where I live!

I brought and still buys from 'boys' section for my girls. Why are tractors and dinosaurs only on boys clothes. Hate the cut of clothes on girls section too .

Lima45 · 03/09/2019 13:49

@TrixieFranklin that's adorable, where's it from?

Imicola · 03/09/2019 13:53

My DD wears dinosaurs, bugs, cars, tractors, blue (plus others of course). Often mistaken for a boy, but I think the people making assumptions are the odd ones. I just don't understand the mentality that girls should be wearing pink. I don't dress in pink every day, but noone thinks anything of that!? So, ignore them.

PhilSwagielka · 03/09/2019 13:56

YANBU. I loved dinosaurs as a kid. And I'm a woman.

Evilmorty · 03/09/2019 13:56

My boy is 3 and still people think he’s a girl because he has long hair, long eyelashes, and a gorgeous face.

It really doesn’t matter, if people are complimenting him on being beautiful, he is still beautiful whether he is (or they think he is) a boy or a girl.

DisneyMillie · 03/09/2019 13:56

My dd3 loves the colours blue and green and therefore mostly picks those to wear. She’d also rather wear shorts than a dress - she gets mistaken for a boy lots but it doesn’t bother us - she gets a bit indignant if she realises!

Somehow her shoulder length blonde curls make her look even more boyish which doesn’t help.

But girls shouldn’t be restricted to pink, yellow and purple.

Imicola · 03/09/2019 13:56

I also felt irrationally annoyed recently when she was given a dinosaur dress as a gift, because it had lots of pink and flowers on it. I mean, it's a dress with dinosaurs, you don't need to 'girlify' it with flowers and pink. Grrr.

Rainbowknickers · 03/09/2019 13:58

My son adored dinosaurs
So did his sister
One of my other boys loved pink, princesses, barbie and anything girly
My eldest daughter wears/loves anything black/gothic
Another of my sons loved his tiara and handbag as a young lad
Also loved his pram with his dollies

None of em grew a new penis or vagina because of that they played with or wore

It’s nothing to do with sex-it’s the child

Nobody ever said a word to me about my kids-I would have torn em a new arsehole if they did

TartanCurtains1 · 03/09/2019 13:58

Our baby DD has a batman onsie as DH liked it. Didn't occur to me that it "should" be for boys!

We had a lot of hand me down stuff, some of which I've had to charity shop straight away as I couldn't bear to put her in horrendous big frilly pink dresses with glitter and butterflies :/

I tend to pick up the more gender neutral stuff or boys stuff as generally it's a bit nicer and there's more selection than a bunch of flipping pink unicorns which seems to be the majority of the girls stuff.

Plus - she's a baby. She doesn't give a rats arse. If you like the dinos that's the only thing that matters!

Neverender · 03/09/2019 13:58

Yep! DH used to dress our Dd as a boy some days (now her bunches give it away) Smile

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 03/09/2019 13:58

I’m guessing your DM hasn’t heard of Mary Anning then?

HariboLecter · 03/09/2019 13:59

BlueZoo at Debenhams have some lovely Dino clothes (some even have unicorns on as well)

PollyRoe16 · 03/09/2019 14:00

Of course! I've seen loads of dinosaur clothes that would work for both boys and girls! I had the same reaction from my mum when I bought my little boy leopard print leggings 🤦🏼‍♀️

SarahSinclair · 03/09/2019 14:02

This lovely little dress is currently available from Next....

Have a look at 2nd hand frugi on eBay, a few years ago they did a really cute pattern of dinosaurs on a bright pink background (including a dress and some really cute dungarees), see if you can get hold of something just to mess with your silly sis and DM heads!!!

spongemumnudiepants · 03/09/2019 14:04

Of course they can.

TurquoiseWeekend · 03/09/2019 14:04

I'm another one who's mum raised an eyebrow at some leopard print leggings I'd bought for my DS. They're lovely as well. He tends to wear them over to her house quite a lot now 😉

HariboLecter · 03/09/2019 14:06

Wonder if they will do this in adult sizes? Sad
