To think girls can wear clothes with dinosaurs on?

I was looking at baby clothes for my baby with my family, I don’t know the sex. I pick out a nice set with dinosaurs on, I think it was green. DSis says “what if it’s a girl?” I said girls can wear dinosaur patterned clothes too?! DM thought I was going “too far”. Am I BU? Or are they being insane? Would you dress your daughter in clothes with dinosaurs on?

I still wear a Jurassic Park top and I’m a girl.

Sparklybanana · 03/09/2019 12:53

Dinosaurs are boys, as are tractors, football, monsters and cars. Girls like flowers, butterflies, glitter and, shit, I know I wouldn't pass my gender stereotype indoctrination exam, what else?! Argh! Um, KITTENS! how could I forget kittens!

Oh, and pink. I make a rubbish girl :(

That's probably why dd wears dinosaurs, loves lightening mcqueen, butterflies and kittens. Totally messed up. All my fault. Or perhaps - enjoying life as a girl unrestricted by labels. Her 3 year old brother is similarly unphased by pushing prams, feeding dolls and playing with cars. He also helps me with washing and gets his own drinks. His future wife better adore me otherwise I'll buy her furniture and let myself in whenever I want! #kidding

Kuponut · 03/09/2019 12:54

My 6 year old's two fave tops are her superhero "pow" t-shirt and one with orange dinosaurs on.

BillywigSting · 03/09/2019 12:55

I'm a woman and have been somewhat obsessed with dinosaurs since I was about one (apparently).

They are being utterly ridiculous. Of course girls can wear dinosaur prints. (my favourite casual dress is covered in them)

sweetkitty · 03/09/2019 12:55

Don’t you if you put a girl baby in a top with a dinosaur on it she’ll immediately catch the gay or become one of those transexuals? Better stick to pink fairies just to be safe and stick a big pink headband on her head just do people don’t confuse her with a boy!

Seriously DD2 loved dinosaurs and even her school shoes had dinos on them. People are stupid.

NearlyGranny · 03/09/2019 12:57

Good grief! Is it still 1959 in your extended family?

You've got your work cut out there. I do wonder whether some of this gender dysphoria we're hearing so much about might be traceable to our society's current obsession with constructing highly visible manufactured gender roles and crazy rules for babies and children.

I'm planning a dinosaurs-on-mustard onesie for starters for my unborn first dgc, and because I sew, I can keep up the supply of unique and gender-neutral garments to demand, whichever sex it turns out to be! There are great solid colours out there and fabulous patterns of clouds, birds, jungle or forest animals, whales, seagulls, even avocados and broccoli. Much more fun than silly pink frills...

nitgel · 03/09/2019 12:57

Coach make a really nice dinosaur jumper for women

ZapADi · 03/09/2019 12:58

Dinosaur clothes are great for girls and boys.

DD is upset at the moment because she loves Mike The Knight and has since she was about 3. She's always had MtK t-shirts and hoodies, her current ones are very nearly too small, but she's 8 next week and I've tried everywhere and I can't find any MtK t-shirts in age 8 :( I've always had to buy hers in the 'boys' section.
*If anyone knows where I can get one then please PM me. Happy to buy online, even got ebay alerts set up but no joy so far.

bushtailadventures · 03/09/2019 13:02

I bought 4yr old dgd wellies with dinosaurs on last week, she looked at the ones with 'girly' patterns on, but wasn't interested. She's worn them every day and I had to remove them from her bed the other night. Dinosaurs are for everyone! (even grandmothers)

firstimemamma · 03/09/2019 13:04

My one year old son has some lovely dinosaur bits and I'm definitely saving them for a future child - girl or boy! Yanbu, your family are being narrow-minded and weird.

RaininSummer · 03/09/2019 13:04

I deliberately seek out the more interesting clothes for my granddaughters and so does my daughter. This does often mean walking straight past the vast sea of uniformly princess unicorn vomit which comprises the 'girls' section' in many shops and buying from the so called 'boys' section'. I find it really off that we don't just have a 'children's clothing'section. They love their dinosaur, sharks, planets, monsters etc clothing.

HariboLecter · 03/09/2019 13:06

My niece is nearly 4, she loves dinosaurs Grin

BarbariansMum · 03/09/2019 13:07

Girls can only like "cute" animals, boys only like things that kill. It's a gender thing.

HariboLecter · 03/09/2019 13:07

@ZapADi if you know someone with a printer, you could buy some transfer paper and print your own to iron on to plain tees and sweaters?

Mrsducky88 · 03/09/2019 13:08

Today my 2 year old girl has picked out some trousers with cars on and a navy jumper with dinosaurs. She has pink, floral and other “girly” things to pick from too but that’s what she chose today. I honestly don’t know why it bothers people!

TooManyPups · 03/09/2019 13:09

I bought this dinosaur one for my dd due in 7wks.

To think girls can wear clothes with dinosaurs on?
OrangeSlices998 · 03/09/2019 13:09

No. Dinosaurs for penis owners only, girls can only have flowers, unicorns and cute kittens.

YABU.

[sarcasm]

RogueV · 03/09/2019 13:10

YANBU

BettyBottersBitterButter · 03/09/2019 13:11

YABVVU OP, dinosaurs were all boys. Why do you think they died out? Grin

(Yes I would dress DD in clothes with dinosaurs on them, though she tends to prefer unicorns. Which incidentally used to be considered very tough and not at all girly!)

ZapADi · 03/09/2019 13:11

That's a good idea @HariboLecter, I have thought about doing something on Redbubble like that.
She won't let me throw out her old ones. I have made them into cushions and her dolls wear them. Her bedroom is totally MtK :)

HariboLecter · 03/09/2019 13:11

@TooManyPups cute!!

mogtheexcellent · 03/09/2019 13:11

This is my thought exactly.

As for the OP I spent my entire mat leave campaigning with others for the #dinosaursforall campaign as part of Let Clothes Be Clothes. As a result you now see dinosaurs regulalry in the girls section. Sadly some retailers still add pink glittery shit and eyelashes but there are many exceptions to this. My DDs favourite dress is the Sewing Circus Land Before Time one which has snarling T Rex on the front. DD is currently wearing a stegosaurus sweatshirt today. I'm an archaeologist so she has a lot of dino clothes.

Perhaps you would like to explain who Mary Anning is to your relatives?

RogueV · 03/09/2019 13:11

DD 7 months has loads of dinosaur print clothes they are really in at the moment

DeRigueurMortis · 03/09/2019 13:11

My experience when the children were little is that the boys clothes were always more interesting/fun/colourful than the girls.

I regularly bypassed the racks of pink glittery tee-shirts/tops in favour of more colourful boys tops.

This assumption that girls/women have to dress a certain way and favour "girly" colours drives me mad.

I went to buy myself some new trainers and low and behold the vast majority of the women's selection was pink/pastels, whilst the men's had an array of different colour choices (too small feet for men's sizes so ended up buying some red boys trainers).

Stick to your guns. Of course girls like spaceships, dinosaurs, cars etc and can wear those clothes rather than ones with cute pink glittery puppies on them.

GruciusMalfoy · 03/09/2019 13:11

Of course it's fine. DD has had dino shoes, tops and jumpers.
