Aibu to think private school kids wearing their logoed school jumpers at the weekend is weird?

Isn’t it a bizarre stealth boast, except it’s not stealthy at all and a bit attention seeking? I know several children who do this. If your child does, why?

You’d never catch a state educated child wearing their school jumper at the weekend. If my child started to, I’d suggest they changed.

Personally I think we live in times when it is pretty common for the fairly wealthy middle classes to be carelessly scruffy and shop in Aldi while the people that the snootier ones might look down on are pushing expensive prams and wearing designer items. I think it's actually pretty patronising to the less wealthy to suggest that other people should deliberately dress down in their presence for fear of upsetting them.

My dcs go to (state) superselective grammar schools. They have to wear uniform to/from sports matches at the weekend. They often wear sports or school trip hoodies out and about. But I guess that is just as bad they are proud of their school.

EllenMP · 04/09/2019 17:53

Also, private schools have sports matches on Saturday and many of them require pupils to arrive at school for the match and leave school after it in their regular uniform.

mathanxiety · 04/09/2019 17:55

And frankly, the members of that tribe are very good at identifying and keeping aloof from people who don't belong in it. It's quite a trick to get away with, excluding people very subtly, left, right and centre, but presenting to the world as down to earth types, back bone of the country, etc.

Answerthequestion Wearing a woolly v-neck school jumper which goes over a shirt as part of school uniform rather strange and not something I’ve seen

I think that would probably mark out the kids whose parents are so skint they have very few clothes to be honest.

I reckon the OP is just talking about the odd bit of sports kit or trip jumper/t-shirt. Hardly crime of the century, unless you're a grown adult (aimed at OP) who's looking to have an internet rant about what amounts to bugger all.

monstiebags · 04/09/2019 18:02

Private schools often do lessons on Saturday morning - they also have lots of sports matches every weekend

mummyrocks1 · 04/09/2019 18:03

My ds wanted to wear his pe hoodie he wears to school over the summer hols. It has a logo on it. God knows why as it is fleece lined and very hot. I couldn't be bothered to argue and didn't see a problem. He's 6

Doryhunky · 04/09/2019 18:09

When I was little we sometimes wore our blazers at the weekend because we didn’t have very many smart clothes.

TheBigBallOfOil · 04/09/2019 18:14

you better write to the vice chancellors then Bertrand. I’m sure they’ve got nothing better to think about.

TheBigBallOfOil · 04/09/2019 18:16

Ps - how will the students know where all the stupid people are? Pretty tactless to flaunt insignia of the university to them too, isn’t it?

EtonianMother · 04/09/2019 18:30

Goodness, what a thread.

OP, do you also wonder about children who wear other items of school clothing during the holidays, or is it just hoodies/jumpers that bother you? My DS1 (16) wears his logo-toting school PE stuff for sport in the holidays, purely because he hasn't got anything else to wear for sport (why would I buy sports clothing twice over?) Plus he doesn't give a stuff what he's wearing. To him, it's just sports kit. Ditto his school sports bag, which he uses to cart sports stuff around in whenever he needs it. To anyone who sees him walking to the (council run) leisure centre, I suppose he would look as if he were wearing his school uniform. But it would be a bit odd if anyone cared, as DS1 certainly doesn't.

MrsC45 · 04/09/2019 18:30

It might be sport activity related? They might just like them. My son got a hoody from school when he started secondary, he wore his around and about for a while. It was comfy, he liked it. He's at a state grammar. A lot of local children wore the leavers jumper given at the end of primary, again not private school.

CendrillonSings · 04/09/2019 18:32

Well, there are times and places for everything- and places in both Oxford and Cambridge where a display of conspicuous wealth would be tactless.....

That’s a little harsh on colleges like Mansfield and Robinson, but I take your point that we should be careful not to hurt their feelings...

BertrandRussell · 04/09/2019 18:32

“you better write to the vice chancellors then Bertrand. I’m sure they’ve got nothing better to think about.”
No need. Kind and thoughtful people will do it anyway. The others are lost causes destined for the Bullingdon club and high office. Grin

I'm a landlord and I would allow this providing he could provide evidence that he is legally allowed to reside in the Uk (assuming the property is in the UK).
However I would not put his name on the tenancy agreement. Thus the woman is the only official tenant. The young person would have no legal status whatsoever to remain in the property if the woman moved out. She would loose her deposit and get an appalling reference if she didn't hand back the property with vacant possession when she eventually leaves.
I would also specify that no further people could move into the flat.

LolaSmiles · 04/09/2019 18:41

Wearing leavers / event / team hoodies = quite normal and done here by kids from all schools
Just as kids wear their football club / cricket team / dance schools hoody quite normal
Wearing a woolly v-neck school jumper which goes over a shirt as part of school uniform rather strange and not something I’ve seen

I agree.
The leaver hoodies, trip hoodies and sports team kit pieces are commonly work around at most state schools here.

TheBigBallOfOil · 04/09/2019 18:43

I can tell you from experience Bertrand, the locals can deal with it. Condescension not required.

stucknoue · 04/09/2019 18:45

My dd used to have school on Saturdays

TheBigBallOfOil · 04/09/2019 18:49

Good god. I’ve just remembered. DH used to wear his OH tie when he went to see his clients at court and in prison.
Someone report him to the Bar Standards Board now! I mean, none of them ever complained. But I’m sure they were weeping inside.

angelfacecuti75 · 04/09/2019 18:50

I knew a private school boy and they had school on a sat.

Threepe · 04/09/2019 18:53

Here in Ireland, state school and private schools always wear their school hoodies especially on weekends, if going to a sports events, some private schools here have half day on Saturdays as far back as I can remember

TheBigBallOfOil · 04/09/2019 18:56

Although now I think on, tons of OHs have ended up in prison. He’s fine! Thank god

JonSnowIsALoser · 04/09/2019 18:59

If wearing school jumper at weekends means stealth boasting, then wearing casual clothes must surely be virtue signalling?

YAB definitely U.

phpolly · 04/09/2019 19:08

My son's school (London) had lessons on Saturdays. Regular uniform required.

manicmij · 04/09/2019 19:26

Probably been at school. Even kids at private schools prefer wearing their own clothes when they can.
