Aibu to think private school kids wearing their logoed school jumpers at the weekend is weird?

Isn’t it a bizarre stealth boast, except it’s not stealthy at all and a bit attention seeking? I know several children who do this. If your child does, why?

You’d never catch a state educated child wearing their school jumper at the weekend. If my child started to, I’d suggest they changed.

Do you mean a uniform jumper or their sports sweatshirt?

incognito1976 · 02/09/2019 23:50

Saturday school - ever heard of it?

No. I’ve genuinely never known anyone in my entire life who went to ‘Saturday school’.

Sounds absolutely awful.

PancakeAndKeith · 02/09/2019 23:54

No. I’ve genuinely never known anyone in my entire life who went to ‘Saturday school’.

Very common in private schools, especially boarding school.
Half day on a Saturday but then a shorter term.
My friends girl has just started at a private school. She does until 6pm every day for prep and then Saturday school for a half day.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 23:57

My dd wears her private school sports hoodie all the time. It's comfortable, she loves it.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 23:58

She has Saturday school also. Loves it.

Banangana · 03/09/2019 00:03

Saturday school?!

I hope that's optional.

I think you opt out by choosing another school

tobee · 03/09/2019 00:03

My ds had to wear school uniform for Saturday detention Confused

YobaOljazUwaque · 03/09/2019 00:04

@littleorangecat22 no it is not optional. It is part of the timetabled lessons and absence would be truanting.

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 03/09/2019 00:04

DSD wore her new PE hoodie round the house for half the summer.

Fairly sure it wasn't a stealth boast to her dad and I. She was 'breaking it in' apparently... 🤨

Youngandfree · 03/09/2019 00:07

Saturday school! Yep I went to a private secondary school and I had school from 9 -12 on a Saturday. 9-4 mon-fri and then Mandatory study or extra lessons if you requested after that between the hours of 6- 9. EXCEPT we didn’t have a uniform!!! 😊

BlackCatSleeping · 03/09/2019 00:08

I can understand sweatshirts and hoodies for casual.

I went to boarding school and we had school on saturdays and chapel on sundays. We had to wear uniform for trips into town. I would not have worn my uniform unless I had to.

crustycrab · 03/09/2019 00:15

YABU. They have school on Saturdays

littleorangecat22 · 03/09/2019 00:25

Wow. I'm surprised that school on Saturdays is an accepted thing and that it's not on an opt-in basis. Seems sad. No weekends away, limited family and social time...

Manontry · 03/09/2019 00:30

Saturday school, yes. But longer holidays.

Bringonspring · 03/09/2019 00:32

State school-shorter holidays. Seems sad

colourlessgreenidea · 03/09/2019 00:32

Apart from the 16 weeks of holiday time, of course.

Loads of time for weekends away, family time, and socialising.

SteelRiver · 03/09/2019 00:34

I'd not heard of Saturday school before this thread!

NeverTwerkNaked · 03/09/2019 00:35

Almost all the private (day) schools round here seem to have compulsory Saturday school. Absolutely puts me off sending the children there. I would rather they were free to mix outside of the bubble of school and do other hobbies or spend time together as a family.

If they have had Saturday school though I wouldn't see wearing the jumpers as showing off. DD goes to Theatre school on Saturday mornings and regularly wears her uniform hoody for the rest of the day. It's not showing off it just doesn't cross her mind to change it

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/09/2019 00:38

I was at a private secondary school and boarders (I was a day girl) even had a separate/traditional uniform for Sundays and Founder's Day.

Houseworkavoider · 03/09/2019 00:38

Ds used to wear his sweatshirt casually after school events.
No snobbery involved -lazy teenager!

TheYeaSayer · 03/09/2019 00:38

The pupils at my DDs state Comp are often see wearing their school jackets outside school times. I spot them around town at weekends.
It’s a nice jacket, actually.

GrimGirl · 03/09/2019 00:41

My dd used to board. Quite often on a Saturday we would pick her up in uniform or loho'd sports kit after Saturday school and srop off ar Asda on the way home or the Harvester for tea.
Likewise on a Sunday to maximise family time dd would.wear her uniform back on a Sunday teatime.so she could.go straight into chapel upon returning to school and not via dorms to change. Again we might stop off en-route to school to shop or eat.
I wasn't ever parading her around in uniform to stealth boast.

hotwaterbottle12 · 03/09/2019 00:43

My ds is at a private. No Saturday school but there are often events held at weekends. As they are representing the school they have to wear their uniforms.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 03/09/2019 00:55

Saturday school?!
I hope that's optional
No. It’s how independent schools end up with weeks more holidays than state schools. To fit the teaching hours in. Anyway, as others have said, school on Saturday is normal, but then sports fixtures or music on Sundays probably also require uniform to be worn.
