To think it is now inevitable that Scotland will become independent?

With brexit and the increasing move to the right wing, I think it is now just a matter of time until Scotland becomes independent.

@ssd yep, sad but true. I woke up the morning of the results to a message telling me she was done with me. We’d had some issues previously but she is very big on the SNP and Independence and I guess it was a step too far for her. 🤦🏻‍♀️

feellikeanalien · 30/08/2019 21:54

On the question of citizenship I wouldn't actually have a choice. I presume that if I wanted to stay in England I would have to have English citizenship.
How this would impact on me being able to move back to Scotland I really don't want to think about.

Oh my god the amount of sheer ignorance on this thread is breathtaking and quite scary. So many sweeping generalisations which just prove that many people have no clue how the EU functions.

I'm also speechless at some of the absurd opinions on Scottish independence... Of course Scotland could and should seek full EU membership if it wants. Malta, Ireland, Latvia, Estonia to name a few small successful countries, seem to be doing ok out of it.

user1471519931 · 30/08/2019 23:45

Oh and saying that Scotland only has oil and gas just makes me guffaw quietly...unbelievable

soapona · 30/08/2019 23:47

I voted yes last time. I was in two minds and really didn't think it was a good idea but on the day felt a bit more Braveheart and thought well I can tell my Grandchildren (when I have them) I voted for independence. I was not in two minds about Brexit I wholesale wanted out of the EU and still do. I would never vote yes again. That moment is gone and I'm very glad we did not win.

ssd · 31/08/2019 00:30

We will next time.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 31/08/2019 07:34

When I voted No in 2014 I knew there was to be a referendum in 2016 on leaving the EU. Some folk seem not to have known this and now claim they were lied to

To think it is now inevitable that Scotland will become independent?
DeniseRoyal · 31/08/2019 07:47

I'm in Scotland, and pretty much everybody I know, friends, work colleagues, would all vote Yes to independance. I think a lot of the older generation are the ones voting No, primarily out of fear. Frankly I am more frightened of a Uk run by BJ.

ArianaCandelabra · 31/08/2019 07:58

My view is that it's less likely than ever. I think the appetite for another referendum will be very low, and I think a lot of people will see voting for independence as doubling down on risk.

Maybe in a few years it will be a more feasible option. But I don't see there being the appetite for it in the next 5.

ArianaCandelabra · 31/08/2019 08:02

Plenty other EU countries do not use the euro.

But they will be obliged to in the future...

StoneofDestiny · 31/08/2019 08:09

This is the poem that Boris Johnson approved for publication in The Spectator when he was its Editor. This is the man the Tory Party felt was the 'best of their best' to be Prime Minister. This is what Johnson thinks of the Scots - I hope Scotland votes to be Independent of ever being subjected to a Tory Government again

The Scotch – what a verminous race!
Canny, pushy, chippy, they’re all over the place, Battening off us with false bonhomie, Polluting our stock, undermining our economy.
Down with sandy hair and knobbly knees!
Suppress the tartan dwarves and the Wee Frees!
Ban the kilt, the skean-dhu and the sporran
As provocatively, offensively foreign!
It’s time Hadrian’s Wall was refortified
To pen them in a ghetto on the other side.
I would go further. The nation
Deserves not merely isolation
But comprehensive extermination.
We must not flinch from a solution.

Imagine the reaction if this was written about Black or Jewish people

amandacarnet · 31/08/2019 08:13

Feellikeanalien, there are lots of people living in England who still have dual citizenship for countries all over the world. This is not unusual. I am actually really surprised you don't know that. Do you only mix with people born in Britain? Because it really is not unusual.

Oh dear stone lighten up. I’m Scottish and it made me laugh.

PersonaNonGarter · 31/08/2019 08:24

I’m in Scotland and most people i’ve discussed it with would vote No.

The polls will show a big rise in appetite for Indy for now and for a while. But that isn’t actually the same as voting for it in a real election. Which the Scots won’t do because we don’t want change.

Also, there is no mechanism for holding the referendum. They get one from Labour maybe - but then Boris and the Toorrrrreeees won’t be in to fight against and the anti-English Etonian thing isn’t so helpful.

MorrisZapp · 31/08/2019 08:31

Lol, that poem is hilarious! It's satirising how some idiots might view us.

DeniseRoyal · 31/08/2019 09:23

@StoneofDestiny I am horrified!! I have never seen this before. In my mind it confirms what I already believe, that we are better off without the vermin in Westminster.

Morgan12 · 31/08/2019 09:30

Scotland wouldn't be allowed to join the EU? Really? 😂😂😂😂

Away back tae bed.

Also most people I speak to don't care if taxes go up. I'm happy to pay for MY country.

StoneofDestiny · 31/08/2019 09:30

Another of his scathing attacks on the population of a whole city in England. Yes - 'how some idiots' like Boris Johnson - a man who wanted to be PM - viewed a city grieving the loss of 96 at Hillsborough.

"A combination of economic misfortune its docks were, fundamentally, on the wrong side of England when Britain entered what is now the European Union and an excessive predilection for welfarism have created a peculiar, and deeply unattractive, psyche among many Liverpudlians. "They ... see themselves, whenever possible as victims, and resent their victim status, yet at the same time they wallow in it"
"Part of this flawed psychological state is that they cannot accept that they might have made any contribution to their misfortunes, but seek rather to blame someone else for it, thereby deepening their sense of shared tribal grievance against the rest of society."

Johnson has utter contempt for whole swathes of the UK - you laugh along with him, you encourage him. When attacked for his comments by MP's, and repeating lies from The Sun, his response was 'it's a kick in the pants for me'.

Butchyrestingface · 31/08/2019 09:34

Scotland to become independent and Ireland to reunify. (Hopefully!) 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇮🇪 ❤️

ForalltheSaints · 31/08/2019 09:45

I think that the UK Parliament will obstruct this so Indy ref 2 may not happen.

Trafalger · 31/08/2019 09:50

Scotland can try and be independent but money will very soon run out, the gas will dry up eventually and then what have you got?

The EU wouldnt accept them as a member state as they don't have the finance so it would be suicide for Scotland to do this.

Scunnered03 · 31/08/2019 09:52

How can we NOT become independent after this Shitfest!!!!

PersonaNonGarter · 31/08/2019 09:55

We won’t tho.

People don’t want shitfest 2.
