To think it is now inevitable that Scotland will become independent?

With brexit and the increasing move to the right wing, I think it is now just a matter of time until Scotland becomes independent.

Aw Qual that's a shame. I promise we're not all horrible Thanks

amandacarnet · 01/09/2019 22:10

I am assuming you are talking about racism when you say people were commenting about your appearance?

Qual

I think the 'problems' you are relating could be found in England to.

StoneofDestiny · 01/09/2019 23:06

Too

CreamCol0uredP0nies · 01/09/2019 23:37

That’s irrelevant, Stone.
Qual described her experience in Scotland.

The fact that you can’t acknowledge that people have any kind of negative experience in Scotland highlights how pointless it is trying to have any kind of meaningful debate.

Qual, I hope you’re ok.

StoneofDestiny · 02/09/2019 06:34

On the contrary - I said the experiences could happen anywhere! It’s the projection that the experiences described are somehow unique to Scotland that is odd to say the least.

Iggi999 · 02/09/2019 07:11

Who is going to invade Scotland a few weeks after independence? Don't tell me I have to add an invasion stockpile next to my Brexit one.
Thanks for the laugh!

StreetwiseHercules · 02/09/2019 08:13

Again, the pig ignorance is staggering. There ha d only been 5 First Ministers in Scotland, and only one resigned under a cloud, for something which wouldn’t even raise an eyebrow at Westminster

Dewar died.
McLeish resigned.
McConnell lost an election and was out of office.
Salmond served 7 years.
Sturgeon is on year 5.

Salmond charges emerged years after he was FM and as things stand he is innocent.

Loads of exiled Scots to join the celebrations 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🥂

pamperramper · 02/09/2019 12:26

Criticisms need to be seen as useful and taken on board.

Calyx72 · 05/09/2019 12:50

Edinburgh Castle 😄 from Led by Donkeys, saw this on Edinburgh Live and on Twitter

Hopefully more and more people will see their way to voting to be self governing rather than being governed by the current Westminster bunch.

To think it is now inevitable that Scotland will become independent?
Kazzyhoward · 05/09/2019 15:15

Considering how difficult it is being made to leave the EU, just how does Scotland think it's going to easily and seemlessly leave the UK? Has anyone thought about the people & goods crossing the border, different taxation systems, different laws, etc., all of which will need a hell of a lot of negotiation etc. Or are they naive enough to think there'll automatically be an open border with free movement of goods and people that will just somehow magically happen??

pamperramper · 05/09/2019 15:38

The UK will have to reach agreement with the EU, at the latest soon after leaving with no deal. Then if Scotland can join eg the Norway group that should make relations with the UK easier.

Calyx72 · 05/09/2019 18:33

Kazzy there has been some thought, debate and discussion around those issues with regard to Scottish independence, yes.

PersonaNonGarter · 06/09/2019 08:30

This is not going to happen. Support for independence may rise, but the likelihood of

  • a referendum being agreed by Westminster
  • the SNP/Scotland maintaining the lack of scrutiny that has so far served them well
  • the No vote suddenly deciding they love constitutional crisis and will change their vote

Is pretty much zero. For at least 5-10years.

Horatioroses · 06/09/2019 12:56

Kazzy the Queen owns a fair bit of property in Scotland. Do you think Westminster would impose rules that stop her nipping up to Balmoral without a passport?

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 06/09/2019 22:44

Surely much of that property belongs to the Scottish crown? We should be able to choose whether we wish to keep a monarchy or do without. Personally, I'd be happy to lose the monarch in Scotland when Elizabeth dies. The properties belong to the Scottish people.

contentedsoul · 07/09/2019 07:55

I'm fine with it on condition that every single Scottish MP is expelled from Westminster and that all NHS subsidies that are funded by UK tax payers for those in Scotland are revoked.
They want to stand on their own...fine go for it. Also grab yourself some kind of military - don't expect us to protect you....and so on and so on!!

Good luck

As someone once famously said...Complacency breeds contempt....you wanna bite the hand that feeds you, fine...now fuck off and feed yourselves.

Horatioroses · 07/09/2019 08:37

Well of course an independent Scotland wouldn't get money from rUK or have representatives in Westminster. Confused
But love the attitude - and you wonder why there's an independence movement.

JingsMahBucket · 07/09/2019 08:43

Of course those things would happen, that's the whole point of independence. We would keep all of our own tax revenue instead of handing it over to WM and getting back what they think we deserve. We won't incur debt for English transport projects and we can stop housing nuclear missiles in our peaceful country. You can have those back, or possibly pay a massive rent. We also are already a portion of the UK military, we don't have to ask for some. We aren't part of the UK NHS, we run the Scottish NHS which is funded by us.

You seem confused about who and what Scotland actually are?

PettyContractor · 07/09/2019 08:54

I have the perfect solution for Scotland, Northern Ireland and Brexit. (Though I think I'm not the first, have vaguely heard this before.)

Since only England and Wales had a majority for Brexit, only they Brexit. Northern Ireland and Scotland remain within the EU, and the land-border between the Brexity parts of the UK and the EU becomes the less contentious England-Scotland border.

Obviously it would be a little bit complicated, for NI and Scotland to be treated as separate countries for EU purposes while at the same time being part of the UK for other purposes, but it could be done. They both already have their own parliaments, and could be given enough devolved power that for almost anything anyone cares about, they were in charge of themselves, without actually having to leave the UK.

PettyContractor · 07/09/2019 08:58

Obviously NI and Scotland can leave the UK if they want to. While I would be a bit sad to see the UK become smaller and less significant, a bit of me also thinks it's a good idea for countries to be as small as possible. That results in them being more homogeneous, and it's then less likely for any geographical minority to have their interests overridden.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2019 08:59

Since only England and Wales had a majority for Brexit, only they Brexit

And also leave the UK, which would leave the United Kingdom of Scotland and Northern Ireland still in the EU.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 07/09/2019 09:17

And also leave the UK, which would leave the United Kingdom of Scotland and Northern Ireland still in the EU.

That sounds like a great plan. We could become 'The Northern British Isles', and England/Wales the 'Southern British Isles'.
