... to ask WTF a VSCO girl is!?

12 year old DD has just announced to me she's a VSCO girl (followed by a peace sign) then gone upstairs to FaceTime...

Google has not helped my lack of understanding. Please, someone far cooler than me, explain in layman's terms!?

✌🏼

My DD and DNiece are exactly like that

acsec · 28/08/2019 23:43

I asked DS 15 if his girl friends were VSCO girls (as they all dress this way) and he look so disappointed in me lol! His reply was “no, we’re just cool...now where’s my hydroflask sksksk” and gave me a peace sign and left the room!

HennyPennyHorror · 28/08/2019 23:47

They sound like your average Australian teenage girl! Who named the look? Where'd it originate?

HennyPennyHorror · 28/08/2019 23:47

acsec what IS that 'sksksk" thing? My DD does it too!

zebrasdontwearbras · 28/08/2019 23:52

My 11yr old DD has been told she's a VSCO girl by her class mates. I would have put an "I" in myself, but what do I know.

I asked her what it was, and she told me it''s girls who wear vans and put a scrunchie around their wrist, and wear little skirts, and have hight pony tails.

I'm just relieved she's not telling me she's really a boy, tbh.

zebrasdontwearbras · 28/08/2019 23:56

DD is really into KPop too. I'm keeping an eye on it. Her internet use is closely monitored.

Is anyone reading who is into Ebay selling? If so, do an advanced search for VSCO, click on 'completed items' and see how you can put a load of tat into a lunchbox and flog it Smile

HennyPennyHorror · 29/08/2019 00:01

Zebras why what's wrong with Kpop?

zebrasdontwearbras · 29/08/2019 00:06

Oh nothing on the surface, Henny - dd just likes BTS and Black Pink, like so many young girls - but some hints on the internet at links with grooming/child sex abuse - you know, like anime.

You just have to be careful with the internet.

zebrasdontwearbras · 29/08/2019 00:21

Anyone can google Kpop and child sex abuse - it's been reported in the media. Just be vigilant, as you would be with any of your children's real life friendships/interests.

LellyMcKelly · 29/08/2019 00:24

Oh bless, I think my 13yo is a VSCO girl but doesn’t know it yet. Still, I’m much happier with that than having her caked in make up, with ridiculous eyebrows and push up bras.

MorganKitten · 29/08/2019 00:30

spends hours watching James Charles

@crisscrosscranky I’d stop that, he’s not a great person in real life.

AGirlCalledJohnny · 29/08/2019 00:34

I’m in the US and it’s been huge here for a while, my DD dips in and out. She tells me the scrunchies are also used as markers and given to boys they like and if he wears it, it’s game on lol. Like in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. I think it’s cute. I remember my mom laughing at my friends and I gushing over some detail on one of our outfits that she genuinely was unable to see what made it look different from what the rest of us were wearing, teens are tribal

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 29/08/2019 00:35

Oh wow... Dd is 9 and has almost no youtube access but still seems to have picked up this look. Confused

zebrasdontwearbras · 29/08/2019 00:37

Please folks - monitor all your kids internet use. You wouldn't believe what's out there - in the mainstream - influencing your kids. Take care and protect them.

You wouldn't let your 12 or 14yr old go to a club with an 18 yr old, or a 25 yr old in real life - yet, unsupervised on certain sites, that is exactly who they're talking to on line. Be careful.

NewtonPulsifer · 29/08/2019 01:23

I love to know what is going on in the world of teens. Is there an equivalent for boys?

sayanythingelse · 29/08/2019 02:36

Wait a minute, Crocs are in fashion now? Great success. I haven't worn my Crocs flip flops to work all summer cos I thought the youngsters would make fun of me Grin

HennyPennyHorror · 29/08/2019 05:02

Newton yes...Eboys....apparently. Maybe they're not an equivalent as such though. Google them.

MardAsSnails · 29/08/2019 05:18

Oh god I think I’m whateverthefuck a VSCO girl is.

But I have bamboo straws I nicked from in my cocktails in a bar in Laos. Not metal.

CrumpetyTea · 29/08/2019 05:46

Not convinced by the "minimal makeup" element- all the girls in the photos have quite a lot of makeup on. I think my minimal is a hell of a lot lower eg none!

PhilCornwall1 · 29/08/2019 05:46

VSCO girls, eboys? WTF is the world coming to??!!

Bezalelle · 29/08/2019 06:25

It's really not that new or unusual for teens to be into fads. Not sure why everyone is so astonished, to be honest.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 29/08/2019 06:32

@BeautyQueenFromMars "is that YouTube video a pisstake? Or a genuine example of a 'VSCO' girl?"

I'm pretty sure its a pisstake. But a non-malicious one.
I think the girl has been interviewed about it because it got so popular.

LynetteScavo · 29/08/2019 07:05

DD told me she is a VSCO girl which made me laugh because she doesn't even use the app.

She insisted I buy her a bloody expensive. hydro flask, which she carries everywhere in her Kanken bag but never uses.

She's now asking for "yarn" to make her own friendship bracelets despite having loads she's bought in beach shops

A few new girls joined her year at the end of last term. They were adopted either by the VSCO girls or the Manga girls according to DD. Teens are indeed tribal.
