12 year old DD has just announced to me she's a VSCO girl (followed by a peace sign) then gone upstairs to FaceTime...

Google has not helped my lack of understanding. Please, someone far cooler than me, explain in layman's terms!?

✌🏼

Urk.... I think l am halfway there messy bun.. kanken bag (although bought in a hiking shop before l realised they were a 'thing') minimal makeup, ancient vans/converse. What is it again 'anyoop'?

ditavonteesed · 29/08/2019 07:16

Dd2 is a vsco girl according to dd1, she always has dh's nirvana or guns and roses T-shirt's on and a vast selection of scrunches, both of them say and I oop tsksksksk which they have tried to explain to me and I just don't understand. (I think that's the point isn't it).

beccarocksbaby · 29/08/2019 07:24

VSCO girls, eboys? WTF is the world coming to??!!

Coming to?

Mods & Rockers were no different in terms of being groups based largely on style and interests.

Beatles vs Stones

Goths vs Punks

Oasis vs Blur

I'm sure there are way more

Mammatino · 29/08/2019 07:42

Apparently I made a gross vile comment about it being a better trend than trashy over blown sex doll look. Sorry I don't think 12 year olds dressed like this are appropriate and I certainly don't think that it is a trend that I would encourage anyone to follow. I am also sorry for the offense I have inadvertently caused.

Coldishfeet · 29/08/2019 07:42

Dd1 has been into this look for a few years probably influenced by following teen fashions on Pinterest and Instagram and liking Brandy Melville. Interestingly she refers to other girls in her school as sheep but think that refers to their actions as well as their look.

The tribal teen thing is interesting. I don't know why people have to be so derogatory over teen girls. I think they're funny and they will look back at their teen trends and laugh just the way we did. It's a shame the look is so brand driven. Other than that I like it.

multivac · 29/08/2019 07:47

"Minimal makeup" is definitely not a low maintenance look for teens. I was really pleased when I saw that at our local secondary, none of the girls seemed to be wearing makeup at all... until I realised that all of them appeared to have flawless skin, perfectly groomed (albeit subtle) eyebrows, elegantly contoured noses and cheekbones, and 'naturally' long, curly eyelashes. It takes them bloody hours every morning before school, according to my friends with teenage daughters...

multivac · 29/08/2019 07:51

I asked my 14-year-old son about this, and he recognised all the elements, but not the label. He also told me, pityingly, that no one says tsksksksksksk - it's just a texttalk thing. Looks like the fad has yet to fully land round here (which would make sense, we're quite rural and tend to be 6-12 months behind with these things; we were bottle flipping long after everyone else had stopped, and are only just hitting the woah...).

Multi DD and her group definitely say the "tsktsk" thing...they snigger whilst doing it though so might be they're taking the piss.

allteanoshade · 29/08/2019 10:14

This explains the massive increase of people wearing Fjallraven Kanken on my commute to work. I had a look at them when I was last in Urban Outfitters and couldn't believe how cheap they felt, I've had better quality stuff out of Primark!!

Also was going to buy a pair of Birkenstocks last month but opted for something cheaper instead, glad I did now Grin

Fresta · 29/08/2019 10:14

Just asked 14 year old dd if she is a VSCO girl as she wears scrunchies, baggy tees etc- she said "OMG Mum, I am NOT a VSCO girl! It's so much more than what you wear and it's NOT a god thing to be called a VSCO girl!" Then she stormed off! Grin

StroppyWoman · 29/08/2019 10:20

This thread has been quite an education.

NettleTea · 29/08/2019 10:32

damn this. Birkies and kanken have been my usual for the last 6 years. If only Id known....

NavyBlueHue · 29/08/2019 10:37

@Sincethereis

Clogs
Hydroflasks
Scrunchies
Uses VSCO filters
Pink drink from Starbucks
Metal straws
Not much makeup
Quite messy hair- not obviously done, often a messy bun
Shell necklace

Just read your list to DD who is all about VSCO. she said add in Crocs, Birkenstock’s, and baggy T-shirt’s Grin

I’m actually pleased DD prefers this to some other trends.

NavyBlueHue · 29/08/2019 10:38

Oh yes and she begging me for a Kanken backpack lol.

Goawayquickly · 29/08/2019 10:42

Ha, I just asked d if she’d like me to buy her a metal straw and her eyes widened and she said “how do you know” I said “I just wanna save the turtle”. She said “God you’re weird mum”

😂

OMG I'm one - or am I, at almost 60, too old to be one? Never knew it was a 'thing', just thought I couldn't be arsed...

PookieDo · 29/08/2019 10:53

My DD and friends do wear no make up. They don’t own any. They like to have freckles (DD15 is so happy she has some)
In part no make up is 1. Too much faff 2. DD has eczema and allergic to a lot of things

It takes her 15 mins to get ready vs DD17 who can take over an hour

RolyWatts · 29/08/2019 11:01

@Ijustwanttoretire me too. I'm just worried that an upsurge in the popularity of Birkenstocks will cause a price hike. We are VSCOldies.

Deadringer · 29/08/2019 11:16

My DD has just turned 16 and I haven't seen any signs, perhaps she has missed the boat on this trend? She doesn't wear make up and my two grown up girls only wear it on occasion, like myself. Seems harmless enough and way better than the 'pornifed' look that seems so popular amongst some teenage girls.

Bibijayne · 29/08/2019 11:26

Can I claim this as a 35-year-old mum? Totally matches most of my wardrobe and can't be arsed with loads of slap look? Grin

Oldraver · 29/08/2019 11:38

Is there an age limit ? I'm 54 . Did I set a trend ?

Oldraver · 29/08/2019 11:39

Oh cross posts with the other not teens oldies

Just tell your teens that this is a 'too old to be bothered' look. They will soon go off the trend

nitgel · 29/08/2019 11:49

Ew scrunchies

minou123 · 29/08/2019 12:04

I'm so excited scrunchies are back.
Back in the 90s my mum used to make my dresses for me. With any spare material, she created a matching scrunchie to go with the dress. If I say so myself, I rocked those outfits Grin
