12 year old DD has just announced to me she's a VSCO girl (followed by a peace sign) then gone upstairs to FaceTime...

Google has not helped my lack of understanding. Please, someone far cooler than me, explain in layman's terms!?

yeah @mammatino, its definitely worse to wear makeup than to go round making judgemental and nasty remarks about someone. its 2019, are we seriously STILL having to explain that wearing make up doesn't make you 'trash'.

my 15 year old has been wearing the massive tshirt/tiny shorts thing with a messy bun for about 4 years. but if she starts saying 'and i oop' she is gonna have to leave home i'm afraid.

I wish DD was a VSCO girl, I seem to spend most of my life these days telling her that she is not leaving this house with those eyebrows

Hadjab · 28/08/2019 22:18

My 12 year old spent her past two weeks pocket money on a pack of 56 scrunchies. When asked why, I thought she muttered something about viscose, I had to point out they were polyester.....Confused

BeckyButters · 28/08/2019 22:19

I wasn't aware scrunchies went out of fashion 🙄

coldishfeet · 28/08/2019 22:20

This seems weird. What's the alternative to dressing in this way? Isn't it just teenage fashion for all girls to dress the same way when they are 12/13/14?

Reading the lists on the Urband Dictionary my 2 girls tick most of the list between them but neither of them exclusively. Shell necklace, scrunchies, vans, friendship bracelets, carmex(!), anklet, Kanken backback, messy bun, oversized sweatshirts or t-shirts with short shorts. But this is all stuff that is sold in shops and marketed to teens so I am not getting why it is considered a 'type' of teen - but I do get that I am old and wouldn't get it!

I'm currently the only one who wears Birkenstocks and I brought the metal straws into the house. DD2 has always shared my love of sunsets and pretty skies and does actually care a lot about the environment but I have noticed one of her other friends suddenly posting sunset photos and save the rain forest posts and thought it was a strange turnaround for her.

BroomstickOfLove · 28/08/2019 22:22

I bought a hydroflask at the start of the summer, based on long and thoughtful research, and then regretted it when all the VSCO girl/ basic white girl hydroflask references started showing up on my social media a week later.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/08/2019 22:23

Thanks so much for the folding metal straw mention criss

Stocking filler number 1 Grin

cupofteaplease · 28/08/2019 22:23

I feel like I’ve found my people! I had no idea what this obsession with metal straws, scrunchies and xsxsxsxsxsx was all about!!

Sexnotgender · 28/08/2019 22:24

I seem to spend most of my life these days telling her that she is not leaving this house with those eyebrows

Been there with DD, thankfully it was a relatively short phase. I do however wish I’d been more active in my photo taking because dear lord it was hilarious some days.

EmmiJay · 28/08/2019 22:25

VSCO = 90's all over again

Fresta · 28/08/2019 22:32

Ooooh- this sounds like my dd- she bought scrunchies for all her friends and herself let Christmas- hair always in a messy bun, scrunchie on wrist, bought friendship bracelets on holiday, stopped wearing big eyebrows a while ago, baggy t-shirts with cycling shorts, and wanting a fall raven backpack (not convinced on this one! ££££s)

multivac · 28/08/2019 22:36

Crucial question before I quiz my 14-year-olds on this: how are we pronouncing 'VSCO'? Is it 'vus-co'?

whoamitojudge · 28/08/2019 22:41

This is my 15 yr old to a tee! I’ve just read this post to her and she showed me the You Tube clip.
Mind you if I hear sksksk one more time I’ll hide her scrunchies and shell necklace Grin

motherheroic · 28/08/2019 22:41

The 'sksksksksks' is just button mashing really.

Instead of saying 'lol' people just type/swipe random letters 'aahshdhdka' to let you know something was really funny.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 28/08/2019 22:41

This is hillarious!
Loving the return of the scrunchy 😊

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 28/08/2019 22:42

What's with the noises???!!

RolyWatts · 28/08/2019 22:45

This was me in the 90's. I love it. I was chatting to some fellow 90's folk the other day about how we would be mortified if anyone could tell we were wearing loads of makeup. It was all clear mascara and lip balm.

Girls have always followed trends. I think the "basic bitch" "sheep" comments are horrible. I was a grunge girl in the 90's. Was I the only one... Fuck no. Unless you walk about like Grayson Perry, you look like someone else.

multivac · 28/08/2019 22:46

HOW DO I SAY IT? #elderlyface

OwlBeThere · 28/08/2019 22:53

@multivac its 'Vis-co' (am howling at the poster mishearing it as viscose and talking about polyester!)

multivac · 28/08/2019 22:57

thank you!

ChicCroissant · 28/08/2019 23:02

The eyebrows! Any craze that does not involve the Angry Birds eyebrows gets my vote, that backpack could be worth it after all (loving your description sexnotgender )

Are we talking proper fabric-covered scrunchie here, not just a hair bobble?

Itstheprinciple · 28/08/2019 23:02

Apparently crocs are cool. That is the thing I find most hilarious.

Itstheprinciple · 28/08/2019 23:04

Yes, a proper 90's scrunchie, on your wrist to coordinate with your outfit. Its
Its all about the 'aesthetic' apparently.

motherheroic · 28/08/2019 23:18

@ChicCroissant They are proper scrunchies. Not those shit hair bobbles that split after a few uses.
