12 year old DD has just announced to me she's a VSCO girl (followed by a peace sign) then gone upstairs to FaceTime...

Google has not helped my lack of understanding. Please, someone far cooler than me, explain in layman's terms!?

✌🏼

healthylifestylee · 31/08/2019 07:10

It's more an America thing. But your daughter has just announced she is a basic white girl.
It's just someone really who is following all the current trends.
Oversized T-shirt's
Stainless steel water bottle preferably a hydroflask

Metal straws
Shell necklace and friendship bracelets
Scrunchies
Birkenstocks and crocs

All of these things are in right now and a vsco girl has all of or as many of these things
The term comes from an app called VSCO used for editing images
A lot of those things have been 'in' for a long time and now VSCO girls mean my Birkenstocks and scrunchies make me look like I'm trying to be 12 not 20 ffs

BlueBilledBeatboxingBird · 31/08/2019 08:17

I myself don't know the first thing about grime and drill culture, but if they exhibit the same profile of excluding anyone who isn't thin, white, rich and pretty then I also think they are similarly problematic.

Grin Grime and drill are urban, predominantly black sub-cultures and music genres. Stormzy is the best known grime artist who most people will have heard of even if they aren’t familiar with grime as a genre.

SistersOfMerci · 31/08/2019 08:24

ForalltheSaints there's nothing wrong with wearing makeup as long as it's cleaned off properly.

It's not 'better' for the skin for no or minimal makeup use Hmm

glueandstick · 31/08/2019 08:26

Messy hair. Check
Fjallraven bag. Check
Birkenstocks. Check
Metal straw. Check
Water bottle. Check
Minimal make up. Check

OMG IM 14 AGAIN

PrimalLass · 31/08/2019 08:45

Ah this is why DD asked for Carmex. We live by the beach so she is already peak vsco. But I put the metal straws away after that poor woman died from impaling herself on one.

beccarocksbaby · 31/08/2019 09:45

My son played with my dog yesterday with his friends 🙄

EntirelyAnonymised · 31/08/2019 12:11

‘Basic white girl’
‘Basic bitch’

What is this ‘basic’ thing? There’s a lot of misogynist talk on this thread, particularly centred around young girls, whatever their fashion choices. It is grim.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 31/08/2019 21:50

Huh?!
What's with the noises? And why do they care about a drag queen being hit in the balls??!!!! HmmHmmHmm

ChippyMinton · 31/08/2019 23:29

DD says say hydroflasks-ks-ks-ks-ks to get the sound. It’s how they laugh apparently.

Birdtablegreen · 01/09/2019 08:40

Doesn’t seem particularly strange to me - just a typical teenage trend really!! I don’t understand the noises though?? I watched the video and still didn’t get it Grin

No different to the emos vs chavs of the early 2000s, scene kids etc! (Although obviously totally different styles!)

Sunshine1239 · 01/09/2019 12:43

Dd13 announced this yesterday and I’m delighted as she was craving the false trout pout look previously so I hope it lasts for years 😂

Sunshine1239 · 01/09/2019 12:44

I just thought she was starting to copy love islands Lucy’s look!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 01/09/2019 13:03

DD says say hydroflasks-ks-ks-ks-ks to get the sound

OMG Chippy, I've finally got it! GrinGrinGrin
I think I was trying to say sksksksk (like "tsk" without the t) but your daughter's tip was perfect!

I am major cringe for my young female relatives and I'm loving it!

SeaSidePebbles · 01/09/2019 13:10

OMG, I got one of those at home!!
We bought a water bottle for work and she did say something like ‘you’re so disco’ and I said ‘you what?’

So what she was saying is visco.
So that’s why she’s wearing my birkenstocks!
And that’s why she’s wearing her dad’s tshirts. I thought she was Billie Eilish-ing, but no...
And that’s why they pulled an all nighter and went out to photograph the sunrise at like friggin 5 am!
And that’s why she insists on wearing the Kranken rucksack.
And that’s why she wears scrunchies in her wrist.

Tell you what. I’ll order her a metal straw, write a card with ‘save the turtle oop, sksksksk and then laugh.

The silly girl. I thought she was bonkers asking for aqua crocs...now Iget it!!

Fresta · 01/09/2019 13:10

DD is still adamant it's not something you would call yourself or want to be- she says VSCO is a term used to make fun of those types of girls and they are mostly American not English!

TitianaTitsling · 01/09/2019 19:17

You can actually buy VSCO starter packs on eBay....

... to ask WTF a VSCO girl is!?
Danglingmod · 04/09/2019 18:30

OK, so this was actually hilarious today. First day back at school for the students. Two year 8s clocked my new water flask and one said, "Miss, I'm bringing you in a scrunchie tomorrow!" I replied, "save the turtles..." and they ran away screaming, "Miss knows what Vsco is!!!"

ChicCroissant · 04/09/2019 19:08

Allington · 04/09/2019 19:39

AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

totes fed up with SAVE THE TURTLES... Grin - I mean, I am all for saving the turtles, if it is genuine, but not just saying it to be fashionable.

PlatinumBrunette · 04/09/2019 21:42

Loving your work @Danglingmod :-D
My DD had an induction day at college yesterday and within 5 minutes of arrival she texted me with "I've just heard VSCO used in a sentence, groan"
I simply responded with 'Hydroflasksksksksks' (thank you to @ChippyMinton for that gem!) Apparently this made a stressful day so much better ;-)

MunchMunch · 04/09/2019 21:46

Grin DanglingMod

I remember when dabbing was the in thing and I stopped at a zebra crossing to let two young boys about 10ish cross. They were looking at me and taking their time so I dabbed 🤷🏻‍♀️ Grin they loved it and dabbed back. I've got absolutely no idea why I done it, I mean, I was a late 30's, dm of 3 and totally uncool Grin

MyLucifrr · 04/09/2019 21:48

Mine are VSCO girls too! Like surfer girls but with expensive water bottles. Apparently thrifting is also in fashion (charity shop shopping as us oldies would call it

Erm ... no. A thrift store or thrifting is just the American version.

Also OP I would cringe hearing my daughter say that thinking she was cool.

ourkidmolly · 05/09/2019 09:27

@MyLucifrr
Cringe? At a 12 year old? Just trying out a new fad. Christ on a bike, life is hard enough without parents expecting their Year 7s to be so cool that they don't say they're cool! I think it's endearing.
