To think that No Deal Brexit is the only option now

I’m a staunch Remainer, I think Brexit is absolute madness but I can’t see any way out of this mess except No Deal now - the division is too great and views are too entrenched

Leavers insist it will all be fine so the
only option is to do it and see what happens

The way I see it, anything less will just lead to the uprise of the Brexit Party until we ‘leave properly’ anyway.

We might as well just jump of the cliff now. If it’s all rosey then great.

If it’s not at least we can start to repair the damage sooner rather than later

@MindyStClaire - it is truly shocking, esp from an ex-NI secretary of state.

Theresa Villiers is a current minister in Johnson's cabinet. I just googled and she has a majority of 300-odd in a remain constituency. They talk about Amber Rudd's seat in a GE but Villiers' must be under threat too.

MindyStClaire · 28/08/2019 15:37

When did she say that Craic - today? Horrifying.

Havanananana · 28/08/2019 15:40

where has any Tory said they want to ditch the GFA? -2

Just to add to my comment about the Tories and the DUP - the whole Confidence and Supply Agreement between them is technically a breach of the GFA.

And who can forget Priti Patel's comments about Ireland and food shortages - another blatant example of the UK's lack of respect towards the RoI? - inews.co.uk/news/politics/priti-patel-home-secretary-ireland-food-shortages-backstop-brexit/

CraicGalore · 28/08/2019 15:53

It was in December 2018. Patrick Kielty's response was a particular highlight.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/08/2019 16:41

I think this might actually bring us close to a WA.

Parliament was never going to vote for anything, they are badly split.

This way an agreement with the EU might work. Or I might be falling to a wishful thinking syndrome.

I think you’re right - I’m convinced Boris is actually trying to do the opposite of what it looks like on the face of it i.e it’s to avoid no deal rather than achieve it

I agree but then I'm not sure if it is just wishful thinking. I think leaving 2 weeks at the end of October is aimed at forcing Parliaments hand and agreeing the deal he 'negotiates'. They can't say they want to avoid no deal at all costs then piss about like they did last time. It will be the WA with a slight change or no deal.

BelleSausage · 29/08/2019 07:58

@Bearbehind

I think you have under estimated just how much some people stand to make from No Deal. The wealthy on the inside of the Leave campaign are making money on shorting the pound. Both Farage and Rees-Mogg have been caught doing this.

If you know a market is going to tank ahead of time then you can make a killing. Does anyone in the current government strike you as someone who would put the interests of the people over a quick buck?

In isolation, no, but they’d also have the rather pesky task of dealing with the fall out for the rest of the country

Thymeout · 29/08/2019 08:16

It's not just the politicians in the public eye who'll make a killing. It's the shadowy figures behind them who stuff their 'war chests' (Cummings in Sun Times leak) who worry me. Not usually a tin-foil hat wearer, but I'm suspicious about some of these leaks, too. Operation Yellow-hammer, which was too up-to-the-minute for sacked ministers to have had access to, is now beginning to look like project fear to soften up MPs to get a WA through the Commons.

Will have to wait for Ruth Davidson's statement, but the Scottish Sun, first with the rumour? and 'close friends' were v quick to talk about the demands of motherhood and her teenage depression to play down the political impact of her impending resignation.

BelleSausage · 29/08/2019 08:31

@Bearbehind

Do they? Do they really have to deal with the fallout? Or would it present an ideal opportunity to sell off some of the country’s assets for profit?

BelleSausage · 29/08/2019 08:33

@Thymeout

Yes, I thought that too. There was a lot of spin going on yesterday about why she went. My guess is that she was against proroguing and doesn’t want her name tied to what happens next.

noodlenosefraggle · 29/08/2019 09:06

One lot or the other would have to deal with the fallout. I don't think Johnson ego would let him go down as the Pm who turned us into a basket case. The worry is that both the hard right and hard left have a, 'rebuild society the way we want it after total breakdown of all institutions' philosophy. Whether moderate MP's can stop them is the question.

Thymeout · 29/08/2019 09:12

Unless something really traumatic has happened in RD's personal life, I don't think she's the sort of woman who'd cite motherhood as a reason for resigning. Especially with new mother Jo Swinson in a prominent role. And Jacinda Aherne.

Resignation for political reasons as a principled stance makes much more sense in terms of a future career.

MoreProseccoNow · 29/08/2019 11:02

RD has just announced her resignation; she does cite family reasons.

Thymeout · 29/08/2019 11:42

Yes. Comment in the Guardian online is suggesting she doesn't want to queer her pitch with the leadership and is hoping for a comeback at Westminster down the line. I think that's mistaken. Johnson won't do her any favours. She's from the wrong wing of the party. Otoh, when the pendulum swings back, if it all goes tits up for Johnson & Co, resignation on a matter of principle would play much better for her.

I'm wondering if she's telling the truth and it's something like PND or a problem with the baby or her partner.

Mordred · 29/08/2019 11:46

Yes, we have to leave, deal or no deal.

I'm a staunch remainer, but the UK (and especially England) has shown the rest of Europe what we really are: inward-looking, backward, foreigner hating arseholes.

There's no coming back from that.
