Monarchy Abolished?

malibuloving · 19/08/2019 17:52

Other threads have inspired me Grin

Do you think we’ll ever live to see the Royals gone or perhaps our children will?

I can see public support for it to be abolished once the Queens gone. I feel like they’ve had too many chances at this point. The cover up of Andrews vile friendship with the sexual predator Epstein and the awful things Andrew probably did plus the pictures with teenagers has been an outrage. I also really like Harry and Meghan but their hypocrisy is quite embarrassing how they’re banging on about climate change and then jetting off across the globe on private jets. And more and more for all royals.

AIBU to think their time is up soon

and the awful things Andrew probably did That's a bit of a stretch isn't it? The Queen has been photographed with some very dodgy people, yet she is not accused of probably doing awful things.

JenniR29 · 19/08/2019 18:50

No scaryteacher, there is a witness called Virginia Roberts (the girl in the infamous photo) who says she was trafficked by Epstein and forced to have sex with Andrew. She was underage at the time.

He continued to use taxpayers money to associate with Epstein after he first got convicted.

These are serious and credible accusations, it’s not just a case of him being in a photograph.

Whyhaveidonethis · 19/08/2019 18:52

Funny I was just saying this to my DP last night. I used to be fairly ambivalent on the issue of the royals but this Megan And Harry thing along with Andrew just makes me think they need to go.

Gorrisandhorace · 19/08/2019 18:53

I really hope so

YummyFoodie · 19/08/2019 18:59

I do hope they go soon. Funny how the mythical 52% couldn't tolerate the 'rule of unelected bureaucrats from Brussels', but they support the royalty. Just because. Who cares some are gamblers, some openly associate with child abusers and others preach about climate change whilst using private jet more often than I use my car.

origamiunicorn · 19/08/2019 19:03

they have a very effective PR machine that keeps them in power and convinces the people that we ‘need’ them.

Spot on.

Cries of "think of the tourism!" Grin

YummyFoodie · 19/08/2019 19:06

Yeah, I've heard the tourism nonsense too. Hmm hey, give me a few castles plus millions of pounds in annual allowance and I'll happily promote visiting the UK.

Solonelywastheballard · 19/08/2019 19:10

I'd be happy for them to retain their titles, but they loose all power, public money, land, and can only keep one property - and it's up to them to maintain it themselves.

They have enough personal wealth to live the life of riley for many generations to come. It's not like they'll be on the dole if we cut them off.

But saying that, if viva la revolution 👸🤴⚔️⚰️ was on the cards, I wouldn't be adverse. 😉

Livingtothefull · 19/08/2019 19:24

Yes the monarchy should be abolished, the sooner the better. Having said that I don't think it will happen in the lifetime of the current queen, although I despise the institution I do think she has done her best & earned our respect. But the rest of them - forget it.

Alsohuman · 19/08/2019 19:25

Still 70% everywhere except MN.

heath48 · 19/08/2019 19:31

That YouGov Survey is over a year old, only a tiny sample of the population take part,so it’s of no relevance.

PeevedNiamh · 19/08/2019 19:37

They should go, and the you gov survey is not representative in my opinion

Idontwanttotalk · 19/08/2019 19:44

"Is Charles Close to Andrew?

I've repeatedly read the same rumour, that they may be half brothers."
What? You think the Queen has screwed around and got pregnant by another man? Don't be ridiculous. You only have to look at pictures on them at various stages of life to see all the sons are Phil's.

In terms of whether we'll see the abolition of the monarchy, I'm not sure but I don't think I'd ever want a President. They might be elected but look at Trump. He was blooming well elected. He could decide to return to Scotland and try his chances.

HouseholdPlantMurderer · 19/08/2019 19:47

I don't want to pee on the "inequality" and "they can get away with anything" parade, but do you REALLY think that voted in politicians are any better?

mindproject · 19/08/2019 19:54

I really hope they go soon, I've never liked any of them. I think the younger royals must see how absurd they look in modern times. I am happy for them to keep a small palace and a few million. The rest should be handed back to the people.

Dippypippy1980 · 19/08/2019 19:54

I originally thought Harry and Meghan would boost popularity, but they are dreadful! Such hypocrisy. I think once the queen goes, popularity will dip, and of Meghan and happy continue their current behaviour, the public will want funding to be drastically reduced.

BelleSausage · 19/08/2019 19:55

And replaced with what?

Who wants Boris Johnson as head of state? He’s enough of an embarrassment as PM.

BelleSausage · 19/08/2019 20:02

As always with these threads people generally know bugger all about the role of the monarch.

You think Brexit is complicated? Try unpicking a constitutionally monarchy from the government of the U.K.

And the money- it’s mostly theirs. What are you going to do? Asset strip every royal? Certain palaces belong to the state (bucks palace, Clarence House and Sandringham) But all the rest are in the private ownership of the Queen. So fuck all money from that.

We already get all the money from the crown estates. The Queen pays 100% of Crown revenue to the government. She gets back an allowance to travel for state business etc.

Dippypippy1980 · 19/08/2019 20:08

How dare anyone have an opinion😂 off with their heads.

Given the amount of public finding per annum, the public are of course entitled to an opinion. Bad form for cortisone an opinion just because you disagree.

PicsInRed · 19/08/2019 20:12

What? You think the Queen has screwed around and got pregnant by another man? Don't be ridiculous.

The rumour concerns her best friend and racing manager Lord Porcester. The depth of the Queen's friendship with Porcester was even alluded to in Netflix' The Crown.

PicsInRed · 19/08/2019 20:15

Regardless of the truth or otherwise of any of the rumours, the French make loads of revenue from monarchy tourism - and they haven't had a monarchy for 100's of years.

I no longer think we need them.

onedayiwillmissthis · 19/08/2019 20:15

Have never been bothered either way...they are irrelevant to my life...don't give a f* what they get up to...just wish they would pay their own way and stop expecting us to show any (unearned) respect.

The only possible reason to have them is to prevent us having to put up with a President...it's bad enough with the bloody politicians we have now!

StoneofDestiny · 19/08/2019 20:31

Monarchy is a complete anachronism. In a democracy, the idea of elevating one (increasingly huge) family to live in unearned privilege is absurd and an affront to the electorate, Tax payers money is being sucked into supporting numerous enormous homes for these people to live in as well as ‘courts’ of servants and lackies to attend to their every whim. If Andrew wants a private jet to take him to meet his pervert friends, we pay for it - and the security to accompany him! If he wants lavish weddings for his kids, we pay for them. Edward the ridiculous - yes, he lives on the back of our labour. We’ve paid dearly for Philip to go round the world insulting people’s race and culture and for Kate to be a clothes horse without a job!
As a country we show concern for our underfunded NHS, Education, Police and Prison Service but ££££ goes in to pandering to the whims and fancies of a ‘royal family’ who have collectively shown no concept of reining in their demands on the public purse.

PennyNotSoWise · 19/08/2019 20:32

Would it be feasible to get rid of them? I'm curious about how it would work and a bit thick.

There'd have to be a public vote, wouldn't there? Would parliament call it? Would the RF be able to object to it?

Gobbolinocat · 19/08/2019 20:34

Yummy can we see the evidence that people who voted for brexit solely keep the monarchy alive?
That every leaver voted for brexit, and no remainer supports the status quo. Confused
