Monarchy Abolished?

malibuloving · 19/08/2019 17:52

Other threads have inspired me Grin

Do you think we’ll ever live to see the Royals gone or perhaps our children will?

I can see public support for it to be abolished once the Queens gone. I feel like they’ve had too many chances at this point. The cover up of Andrews vile friendship with the sexual predator Epstein and the awful things Andrew probably did plus the pictures with teenagers has been an outrage. I also really like Harry and Meghan but their hypocrisy is quite embarrassing how they’re banging on about climate change and then jetting off across the globe on private jets. And more and more for all royals.

AIBU to think their time is up soon

@Dippypippy1980

I don’t mind another opinion as long as it is an informed one. No one on this thread has so far shown that they understand how the British Constitution works.

Do you have the first clue?

PerkingFaintly · 19/08/2019 20:39

I have a plea.

If we get rid of the monarchy, could we decide exactly what we want to replace it FIRST? And vote for that?

Rather than just voting against the status quo?

I can't take another dog's dinner like Leaving the EU.

NewStarterPack · 19/08/2019 20:39

I've Peak-Royaled.

BelleSausage · 19/08/2019 20:40

And I would have thought people were over having referenda for a bit.

But obviously the politics of hatred and envy are only just kicking off.

What next? A referendum of whether her at No.16 should be allowed to wear L.K Bennet.

And given the current sorry state of our democracy I wouldn’t be holding it up as a shining alternative. Dear Leader Corbyn or Generalissimo Boris. Good God!

HMArsey · 19/08/2019 20:41

What does the queen actually do? Lots of talk at the moment about how the queen shouldn’t be dragged into Brexit, surely she must have some function beyond opening wings of hospitals.

Gobbolinocat · 19/08/2019 20:41

Belle in that case they can simply be moved to be self paying from their own money.
Like other aristos they may want to open up to the public to keep expenses up.

Gobbolinocat · 19/08/2019 20:43

Peking we don't need to get rid just totally scaled down and pay their own way entirely.

QualCheckBot · 19/08/2019 20:45

I would like to see them gone but I can't see it happening this century. They are very skilled at hanging on in there, the British public is remarkably tolerant of all their appalling scandals and as someone mentioned above, they have a vast PR team dedicated to keeping them popular.

I do think the notion of royalty is increasingly irrelevant. And I don't think they are even very "royal" - as in somehow setting a better example of how to behave - they are actually quite chavvy and thick in their behaviour.

Sarcelle · 19/08/2019 20:46

I think I have reached tipping point too. Leaving aside the embarrassment of Harry and Meghan's massive hypocrisy and ridiculous Instagram lifestyle, the sleazy Andrew issue has pushed me over the edge.

I feel somewhat sorry for the Queen. I am not sure any PR is going to be good enough to weather the Andrew story, and nor should it. The latest press release talks of Andrew being unaware and appalled by the allegations against Epstein, but that won't wash. In 2000 Epstein and Maxwell were invited to Balmoral by Andrew, 8 years later Epstein was jailed for sexual offences with minor, a few years after his release Andrew was seen with Epstein, and also seen at his house. Leaving aside the witness statements, you would have to be close to somebody to invite them to the Queen's holiday home. You would know they were in prison and what for. If you were appalled you wouldn't go and stay in their house. You would distance yourself. And let's not forget dear old Fergie's loan from Epstein. Grubby pair of articles. Although when you look at the furore caused by Fergie having her toes sucked 🤮 by a balding Texan, you realise she was a mere babe in arms in comparison.

If this is covered up, that will be the death knell for them all.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/08/2019 20:48

The rumour concerns her best friend and racing manager Lord Porcester
Woah, just Googled him. In the same way the rumours about Harry have to be incorrect because of his indisputable resemblance to the Duke of Edinburgh, the resemblance between Porchey and Andrew is very strong. Shock

BelleSausage · 19/08/2019 20:48

@Gobbolinocat

What about the people who current work for the crown estates? What happens to those jobs once the places aren’t needed for state reasons. Do you honestly believe that the National Trust (or who ever) would keep them all on.

Also, my point was not about the Queen being poor. Bit about people harping on at all the money we would save without them/ would get from abolishing them.

There is no money. Unless we sell of the government’s crown assets. So Bucks Palace to a Chinese consortium? Clarence House to the UAE?

One of the reason there are still vast green spaces in London is that they are ROYAL parks. As I’m owned by the Queen. Who won’t sell them for development. Do you think, I dunno, a Tory government would have the same attitude?

Solonelywastheballard · 19/08/2019 20:49

Let's replace them with cabbage patch kids.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/08/2019 20:49

Oh, okaaaaay, I'll put myself forward, selflessly obviously.

As someone who comes from country where presidents are now elected by the people...
You don't want that😂
Seriously though. I think there is nothing wrong with keeping the Monarchy here.

BigFatLiar · 19/08/2019 20:52

If we get rid of the monarchy would we give them back control of the crown estates. As I understand it the monarch gave control of the crown estates to the government in exchange for an allowance (the civil list) so really they should have it back unless we simply accept that the government can simply take other people property when it wants (which it may seem to do anyway).

QualCheckBot · 19/08/2019 20:52

BelleSausage One of the reason there are still vast green spaces in London is that they are ROYAL parks. As I’m owned by the Queen. Who won’t sell them for development.

We could have a Royal Parks Foundation, established in legislation, which could protect them for future development, set out their ownership for the public interest and provide for the cost of their maintenance.

I guess we could also have a referendum on the royals (although it will probably take about 100 years for the UK to become modern enough to consider it) and it would be really nice if we became a republic with a proper written modern Constitution (you know, which actually set out what procedures should be followed on stuff like Brexit, so the economy isn't ruined by parliament, the courts and government making it up as we go along).

Didn't your DH work for Jesus? 😂 Doesn't really fill me with confidence in you😂

StitchingMoss · 19/08/2019 20:54

I wondered how long it would be before someone would trot out the tired old cliche about “Who what’s President Blair?” Hmm

With a democracy you get what you vote for. Obviously Brexit has shown how much democracy can be tampered with but surely we can learn lessons??

The monarchy is ludicrously outdated and holds our entire democracy in the past. We need root and branch change. An elected head of state, proportional representation and a written constitution.

A democracy fit for the 21st century.

19lottie82 · 19/08/2019 20:55

Would you prefer President BoJo?

BelleSausage · 19/08/2019 20:55

@HMArsey

The Queen is our constitutional head of state. A government cannot be formed without her consent but she isn’t really allowed to with hold that, except in a time of crisis. This is a much scaled down version of monarchy already. She opens parliament as it is her parliament. All MPs take an oath to the Queen. Hence why Sinn Fein don’t ever take their seats.

She would have to be replaced with a president thus creating a two tier system. Which is a lot more expensive. Because that’s another layer of elected official who also require security, a house to entertain other heads of state etc.

She does a lot of back door diplomacy for us. After 9/11 it was the Queen’s contacts in the UAE that helped restore oil exports to the U.K. after the Saudis shut up shop.

SeriouslyEnoughAlreadyRantOver · 19/08/2019 20:58

Harry and Meghan are no more hypocrite than any of the others but of course the Monarchy has to go.

The problem is that the younger royals want just that, but keeping all the privilege and properties they have, they said themselves (at least Will did in an interview) that he would love to get away from the limelight and the "working" side of it.

The so-called privately own estates are an absolute joke.

Politically, financially, we do not need a Monarchy at all. Nothing will change if they go, but they will try to keep everything.

It would make absolutely no difference whatsoever if Boris Johnson was called a president, a Prime Minister or a Chancellor.

Even the £ can keep the head of the Queen as a souvenir, nothing needs to change - just update official documents, but practically having a Queen or no Queen would change nothing.

BelleSausage · 19/08/2019 20:58

@QualCheckBot

Yes, and if wishes were horses then beggars would ride them.

As a pragmatist I know that the abolition of the monarchy would not actually abolish privilege. Because it didn’t fucking work anywhere else in the world- Russian,Spain, France etc. Power abhors a vacuum. Some oily politician or oligarch would be straight in their to pick up the pieces.

Anyone who thinks the man in the street would benefit at all is dreaming.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 19/08/2019 20:58

Would you prefer President BoJo

Obviously not. However who would object to a President Obamamor Varadker?

The point being we vote them in and we can then vote them out.

We will never be able to vote out King Charles, King William or King George regardless Of any lack of morality, intelligence or common sense.

StoneofDestiny · 19/08/2019 20:58

Lots of palaces across the world attract millions of tourists despite their being no 'royal' family - Versailles, The Hermitage etc etc They will need staffing. Lots of cities in the UK have public parks with no royal association. You can't justify the existence of this overindulged, ever growing family because of 'job losses' - first worry about job losses in the essential services like health, education, public order as well as job losses in our countries infrastructure - steel, shipbuilding and retail who are currently causing concern.

managedmis · 19/08/2019 20:59

Yeah I agree.

Seeing HM and Andy Pandy shooting with his buddy Epstein in 2000 sealed the deal really.
