Monarchy Abolished?

malibuloving · 19/08/2019 17:52

Other threads have inspired me Grin

Do you think we’ll ever live to see the Royals gone or perhaps our children will?

I can see public support for it to be abolished once the Queens gone. I feel like they’ve had too many chances at this point. The cover up of Andrews vile friendship with the sexual predator Epstein and the awful things Andrew probably did plus the pictures with teenagers has been an outrage. I also really like Harry and Meghan but their hypocrisy is quite embarrassing how they’re banging on about climate change and then jetting off across the globe on private jets. And more and more for all royals.

AIBU to think their time is up soon

No, that would be a hollow echo of history - a pastiche - with the living heart ripped out of it.

  1. Scottish culture isn't pastiche. It lives in the people of Scotland.
  1. No one calls Versailles pastiche. It's considered fascinating and is extremely well visited. Their royals haven't been in residence for some time...
  1. Scotland has a queen. The Queen.
If Scottish royal pageantry is pastiche, so's all that English royal guff too.

Might as well do away with it then?

AdelaideK · 19/08/2019 22:30

Yes I'm not convinced George will make it to the throne. I think a lot of people may become anti monarchy when the Queen dies.

This Andrew business makes me more convinced than ever we should get rid of the lot of them. It's the 21st century. They belong to a long gone age.

StitchingMoss · 19/08/2019 22:37

AlexandPea, that’s hilariously melodramatic GrinGrinGrin!

I love these nonsense statements: “a force for good” “a unifying figure”!

In what way???

It’s heartening to see so many on here finally beginning to see this ridiculous family for what they are.

StitchingMoss · 19/08/2019 22:38

And why do so many people think the queen is so marvellous??? I’m genuinely baffled!

Lilylay · 19/08/2019 22:43

I think it was looking quite positive for the royals until Harry and Megan. Now I have got nothing against Megan at all as a person but as a couple they have come out with some silly stuff the pair of them ie climate change
It’s does make you wonder why William does not seem as friendly towards his brother like he knows they could be a liability

StoneofDestiny · 19/08/2019 22:44

No, that would be a hollow echo of history - a pastiche - with the living heart ripped out of it

Isn't that what Edward put on with his 'It's a Royal Knockout'?

History is an evolving story. It's not a 'we have a monarchy, so we need a monarchy' story. Cultural identity is not wrapped up in a family you are unlikely to meet and whose lives bear no resemblance to your own.
Change and improvement in our country has never come from having a monarchy. It's come from movements of workers pushing to take people's' lives forward e.g. Suffragettes, Chartists, General Strike etc. If it was up to monarchy, history tells us we'd still be bowing, scaling and 'knowing our place'.

AdelaideK · 19/08/2019 22:45

Probably because she's kept her gob shut for 60 odd years and we don't know what she thinks about anything.

Shame the rest of them couldn't follow her example.

Sarahlou63 · 19/08/2019 22:45

And why do so many people think the queen is so marvellous??? I’m genuinely baffled!

A lifetime of dedication and self denial, fulfilling a million stupefyingly boring long winded engagements, being a figurehead to millions of people worldwide and managing a large portfolio of nationally owned properties and staff with all the pressure and diplomacy that that entails and still forcing a smile at 93. I doubt anyone would willingly take on that task.

VeraVinegarTits · 19/08/2019 22:47

I can't abide the Royal Family. Would love to abolish the lot of them.

StitchingMoss · 19/08/2019 22:52

Self denial? What has she denied herself?

She’s kept her gob shut? So she’s a massively overpaid shop window dummy.

Yep - still not getting the adulation.

I thought her cards were marked after Diana died but people have short memories Shock.

StoneofDestiny · 19/08/2019 23:25

Self denial

What self denial - never worried about unemployment or poverty. No bother about living near the right school for the children or wether you'd be on a long waiting list for a hospital appointment. No worry about housework, childcare or home improvements.no worry about your children getting a job. No worry about holidays - lots of holiday homes and private estates abroad. No worry about transport - private planes, helicopters, chauffeurs on hand, endless 4x4's, private train and until recently, a private yacht.

managing a large portfolio of nationally owned properties and staff with all the pressure and diplomacy that that entails

A team of experts in every field manages that!

and still forcing a smile at 93

And no old folks home to worry about. Living a long life and able to smile is not a sign of hardship!

Gorrisandhorace · 19/08/2019 23:28

The Queen only really speaks at us once a year.
No one has any idea what she’s like.
Occasionally we read an anecdote from a Lord about some hilarious little joke she made in 1976 or something (there have been plenty of these weird articles/damage limitation or jobs in the last weeks Hmm)
Otherwise she just says nothing much.
I don’t get how people feel they have such an idea of her ‘personality’ when she barely interacts.
She could be made of cardboard and people would say the same.
I think she’s probably an alright old lady but certainly not any harder working than Nana Noreen or blue rinse Maureen down the road 🤷‍♀️

BizzzzyBee · 19/08/2019 23:34

Time we got rid of them. They aren’t respectable any more. The Queen is the last monarch who people really look up to. After her we’ll just be left with people who’ve publicly embarrassed themselves and taken advantage of their position, who have no humility or sense of duty. People like Meghan who just wants to be a celebrity.

AdelaideK · 20/08/2019 00:07

Does she force a smile at 93?

She looks pretty frosty faced most of the time.

BoneyBackJefferson · 20/08/2019 00:17

I suppose that we could replace one group of people that know very little about how life works for the majority of people with another group of of people that know very little about how life works for the majority of people.

It will all be seen as very progressive and change fuck all.

HeddaGarbled · 20/08/2019 00:28

We don’t need to replace them. We don’t have to have a “president” or a “head of state”. We can just get rid of them and carry on as we do now without the flummery.

zebrasdontwearbras · 20/08/2019 00:35

And why do so many people think the queen is so marvellous??? I’m genuinely baffled!

Probably from watching The Crown on Netflix.

I'd keep them, personally. I think we've got enough going on for now. I don't fancy any more upheavals.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 20/08/2019 00:37

Get rid for sure.

I really believed Harry and Megs would be a refreshing and needed change for the royal family but they're hideous.
You've got William sharing it about

That and Andrew and his 'mates'

Like something you would read in take a break.

Hithere12 · 20/08/2019 00:39

Same. She’s just living her dream of being an A lister.

Amortentia · 20/08/2019 00:51

I’m a bit appalled by the idea that the Queen is a force for good. She’s good at keeping her mouth shut and her head down for her own self-preservation. While many of her subjects are dependent on food banks or just die because of welfare reforms leaving them with nothing she doesn’t make a peep. But, the royals do like to medal politicaly behind the scenes when it’s something that impacts on their interests.

I look forward to an independent Scotland without a monarchy and major land reform that will take full control of the crown estates and stop the money that is being raised in Scotland being siphoned off to the English crown estates.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/08/2019 00:51

It may not happen in my lifetime, but once the Queen's gone I believe the monarchy's time will start running out. However hard they pretend, I just don't think the model fits the 21st century and can't see any of them adapting to anything more suitable

I'm not expecting an "off with their heads" situation though … more that it'll fizzle out through a general lack of public support, and because they become even less fit for anything except ridicule

Hithere12 · 20/08/2019 01:00

that the Queen is a force for good. She’s good at keeping her mouth shut and her head down for her own self-preservation. While many of her subjects are dependent on food banks or just die because of welfare reforms leaving them with nothing she doesn’t make a peep

How can you blame the Queen for that? It’s our evil Tory Government. The Queen has no power, it’s all symbolic, she can’t even vote.

CedarTreeLeaf · 20/08/2019 02:40

The assets belong to the crown estates. If they lose the crown, they lose the assets. The funds can go back to the public entirely. All the property can become ticketed tourist attractions to make even more money. Some of the castles could even become posh hotels or whatever. Give the money to the poor, the NHS, and the people with disabilities, the ones who have been dying from austerity. With the state of the country as it is now, it's obscene to have a monarchy. Especially a monarchy with a Marie Antoinette attitude that displays contempt for the public.

lavenderandthyme · 20/08/2019 04:43

I really think Harry and Megs are doing incalculable harm . Elton John stepping in to ‘protect’ them. George Clooney making statements about it. They are living lives of huge privilege at the nations’s expense. We are suffering being lectured to with little homilies and admonishments to be mindful of the environment whilst they do nothing themselves. It’s beyond tiresome.
And now Andrew trying to dodge responsibility for his disgusting lack of morality.
It’s beyond a joke. These are people we are supposed to look up to.

Oh I think i’d be prepared to give it a go!
