Monarchy Abolished?

malibuloving · 19/08/2019 17:52

Other threads have inspired me Grin

Do you think we’ll ever live to see the Royals gone or perhaps our children will?

I can see public support for it to be abolished once the Queens gone. I feel like they’ve had too many chances at this point. The cover up of Andrews vile friendship with the sexual predator Epstein and the awful things Andrew probably did plus the pictures with teenagers has been an outrage. I also really like Harry and Meghan but their hypocrisy is quite embarrassing how they’re banging on about climate change and then jetting off across the globe on private jets. And more and more for all royals.

AIBU to think their time is up soon

PS Re the garden parties posts: pictures!

I love dresses, jewels etc too.

Is it true that people have discarded meringues with their dentures embedded in them behind bushes as HM approaches?

So just popped up that Kate and William and children have flown on an economy flight up to Aberdeen Grin

Got to love who is doing their PR.

Of course they were going to do that. Obvious PR is obvious, but then, it could set a good example for other members of the RF ....

Harry and Meghan's public image revolves around very visible virtue signalling. Its crazy that they didn't think that taking private jets shortly after a barefoot speech on global warming wouldn't bring them criticism. It is entirely possible that they are so arrogant and removed from ordinary people that they think the rules don't apply to them.

They also have a big PR team paid for by the public purse. Goodness knows what they're doing - or again, perhaps they don't listen to advice when it comes down to a luxury holiday from the day job of virtue signalling...

Same goes for Airmiles Andy, but he has long been known to have the hind of a rhino and not take on board any criticism. Hence his current difficulties.

“shortly after a barefoot speech on global warming ”

Do we have a transcript of the Google Camp speech?

So obvious that last minute change of plan would happen - and on a short haul flight. (Complete with entourage of nannies/security/lackies).

So - if it can be done once it can be done all the time and for all journeys - lets watch this space!

I think that climate change isnt analogous to smoking.

Because smoking damages mainly the person that does it. Where as getting private jets damages us all.

A smoker telling people not to smoke doesn't have much moral authority. But it could be well meant. I started when I was young, now I cant stop, dont make my mistakes etc.

Some one who knows about climate change and realises it's real and still gets private jets for frivolous reasons isn't really defensible.

Aren't they just saying you little guys need to change your habits to save the planet but we are special and important people and will keep doing whatever we find most enjoyable or convenient?

I dont get the bribery / tax thing either. Mostly everyone working in finance or public service is only allowed to accept small gifts. I don't think the royal family should be allowed to do it either. Seems very corrupt.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/08/2019 15:25

(Charles) is interested in a lot of different things

Interested, undoubtably; well informed, not necessarily - which is what tends to happen when anyone surrounds themselves only with those views they admire. Maybe this is why Charles's endless, tedious homilies are long on padding and short on rigour, and explains the view once expressed that his opinions bear the stamp of the last person he spoke to

Gobbolinocat · 22/08/2019 15:30

Oh OK Bertrand. I would have thought someone with very strong views about the royals would rather choke on a scone than go and mingle with them, and accept the hospitality and enjoy the splendour?

Just seems like rather strange to me. Or perhaps not, maybe it's just champagne socialism?

Let's get rid of the royals but not before I've enjoyed the Palace and the food. Confused

Gobbolinocat · 22/08/2019 15:31

Smoking very much damages the people around the the smoker. Smoke particles fill in the air with thousands of noxcius particles.

Practically, how would the abolishing of the monarchy work? Parliament unilaterally votes to get rid?
A referendum would require either the Tories or Labour having it in a manifesto. Trying to get elected on that policy. I don't see how that happens.

Historically, the monarch has been sensitive to issues around the constitution. George V was ready to create 1000 peers at the request of Lloyd George after LG won an election in order to pass his budget (which the Lords had refused to pass as part of a manifesto). So I imagine were there to be a clear democratic mandate for removing the monarchs powers, the incumbent monarch would accept it and stand aside.

Whether we then keep a ceremonial royal family or not would be for further debate ...

lavenderandthyme · 22/08/2019 17:00

If William , Kate and family plus nanny can get on a Flybe flight without an issue, why can’t M and H with one baby? So much for Elton John and his insistence on them needing high security. William is the actual heir to the throne after all.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2019 17:10

How did w and k get to Mustique?

mrscampbellblackagain · 22/08/2019 17:34

BA flight Bertrand - apparently how they always go to Mustique.
