Monarchy Abolished?

Other threads have inspired me Grin

Do you think we’ll ever live to see the Royals gone or perhaps our children will?

I can see public support for it to be abolished once the Queens gone. I feel like they’ve had too many chances at this point. The cover up of Andrews vile friendship with the sexual predator Epstein and the awful things Andrew probably did plus the pictures with teenagers has been an outrage. I also really like Harry and Meghan but their hypocrisy is quite embarrassing how they’re banging on about climate change and then jetting off across the globe on private jets. And more and more for all royals.

AIBU to think their time is up soon

Honestly, I suspect you'd keep your money. 39? There's a good while to go yet (I hope! I'm assuming you're in reasonable health).

I agree but you just never know. I hope it won't happen but things can change so quickly. Look at how quickly the Berlin Wall fell through a series of relatively minor events.

StoneofDestiny · 21/08/2019 09:04

PRINCE Andrew flew on a private jet with paedo friend Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged 17-year-old sex slave Virginia Roberts, the pilot claims. The allegation, made in court papers, is the first to place Andrew and Roberts on Epstein’s plane together

Not just royals flying in private jets - but who they fly in them with, and why.

zackly · 21/08/2019 09:05

the problem with Prime Ministers is that they come and go

I would dare to suggest that that's a feature, not a bug.

Just like 'regular' people

And as for precedent and blood lines.......

Fair point. I sort of hope it will happen but a lot less violently than other revolutions.

I think the queen has gone along with the job as she (and many people) understand/understood it.

"Never apologise; never explain"

Which must have been very hard during the times when, for example, there were rumours about prince Philip having an affair. And subsequent rumours about prince Edward being conceived to prove that the queen and her husband still were having sex.

Her offspring and great-offspring (that may not be a word Smile) seem to want it all ways.

Andrew apparently "demanded" that his daughter deserved the full royal wedding with coaches etc etc because she is a "princess of the blood royal". Ffs.

Then is pictured smiling alongside his mother in the wake of paedophilia scandals.

There's probably no point in my boring on about the post queen generation telling us how to behave and save the planet while doing the opposite themselves.

Because that will attract people who can hear dog whistles everywhere. I am really not just referring to Meghan. I think Kate has been a bit more clever in her media portrayal, and Meghan may still be going along the American route.

Given that my support for the royal family changed enormously in just 40 years, you could be right.

BertrandRussell · 21/08/2019 09:46

I think that Prince Charles is unlikely to live very long after he ascends the throne- and I think his death will cause huge changes in the monarchy. I give it 10 years.

Alsohuman · 21/08/2019 09:52

If you’re right, it’ll be a lot longer than 10 years. Look at his genes, combined with a stress free life, he’ll easily make 100.

lavenderandthyme · 21/08/2019 09:54

AI think the core support for the RF lies with those who are over 40. I really don''t think younger people are interested at all, and many of those in their twenties hardly know who the various members are. They just aren't relevant to younger people. By the time Charles dies I really believe they will have no core support and no one will care. They depend on people lapping up the deference and turning up to see them to some extent.

I think M and H are trying to be 'relevant' with their Instagram posts to reach younger people, but the tone is one of 'listen to us you minions, we are special and can teach you things'. It's irksome.
I see M's pal Jessica is now joining the 'you're all racists' brigade. It would do them more favours if they asked their celebrity friends to keep a dignified silence.

I get the impression that M attributes all negative comment to racism without actually listening or thinking about whether it might be about other things.

“If you’re right, it’ll be a lot longer than 10 years. Look at his genes, combined with a stress free life, he’ll easily make 100”
I bet he won’t. I reckon he won’t see 85.
Cue “disgusted of Tonbridge Wells” outrage at distasteful speculation.

Alsohuman · 21/08/2019 10:05

Bet you a fiver he celebrates his century!

BertrandRussell · 21/08/2019 10:06

You’re on!

Pollypenguin01 · 21/08/2019 10:08

Ok own up who has made a petition to abolish the monarchy!

I would be interested to know how the wider country feels about the Royal Family or if it’s just the MN demographic that seems to be swung towards the end of the monarchy.
I kind of hoped the press would pick up on this thread but so far none of them seem brave enough!

Ivy45 · 21/08/2019 10:11

I really wanted to like Harry and Megan, in fact I did at first but they are just arrogant hypocrites.

Prince Andrew has gone too far. I think some royals have got away with bad behaviour in the past, before social media but there is no hiding now.

A lot of people respect the queen so I can’t see anything changing while she is around but after she dies then I think it’s time for a referendum.

Ivy45 · 21/08/2019 10:12

@Pollypenguin01
Is the position on change.org or gov.co.uk?

noodlenosefraggle · 21/08/2019 10:16

It says a lot that people are equating Meghan and Harry doing exactly what Royals always do (I don't think Wills and Kate went to Mustique on Tui) to Andrew's associating with a sex trafficker, not to mention all of his other dodgy associations and behaviour. I do think M & H are doing themselves any favours, but it is nothing compared to what the Royals have got up to in the past.

onedayiwillmissthis · 21/08/2019 10:19

Ivy45 has it spot on.

And all the guff this a.m. about the anger being 'cos we are all racist towards Meghan' is crap.

It's the hypocrisy from both H & M that is peeing us off. And as for Randy Andy...ughhhh

LaMarschallin · 21/08/2019 10:21

Alsohuman

BertrandRussell

You’re on!

Hang on!

If there's a book running, I'm fairly sure that I was back there waving a fiver.

And, if I wasn't, I am now

Totally lost track of the odds, but I'm positive MN bookies are honest as the day is long/or as the reign of Charles 111 is long (depending on which is longer).

Hithere12 · 21/08/2019 10:22

They’ve just hired their third new nanny after two nannies left within weeks of Archie's birth.

THIRD new nanny in less than a year? Sorry what?! It’s probably the most prestigious nanny job going right now so why are people dropping like flies? Oh yeah same reason as the other staff did, same reason she made Kate cry, she’s a b*h behind closed doors. Sorry 🤷‍♀️

Oh and I’m mixed raced and I have said that in other threads before I get the raacist card chucked at me.

BertrandRussell · 21/08/2019 10:24

Now I wonder what it is about the DofC that makes her so much more hypocritical than any other member of the family??

zackly · 21/08/2019 10:26

I do think M & H are doing themselves any favours, but it is nothing compared to what the Royals have got up to in the past.

Yes and no. The climate crisis is serious shit. There's no getting around it.

Ivy45 · 21/08/2019 10:27

@onedayiwillmissthis

The Royals have always got away with a lot, I think some of Q Victoria’s children were pretty bad, but it was always possible to cover things up. Now, mainly due to social media, it’s almost impossible to hide. They can stage manage certain leaks / info to the mainstream press, as they have always done but Twitter doesn’t care! Also, social media is global and citizens of other countries don’t have The deference to the royals that is ingrained in us from a young age, so will just post what they like.

RonnieScotts · 21/08/2019 10:34

Things can't carry on as they are...people (and the press) won't stand for the extravagant spending and opulent lifestyle on the tax payers money for ever. Times have changed.

They need to reinvent themselves and become more useful, harder working and lead a more down to earth lifestyle. (Some are worse than others, but mostly they are all just taking the piss)

zackly · 21/08/2019 10:35

I sort of hope it will happen but a lot less violently than other revolutions.

@LaMarschallin I know what you mean. It's just so outdated.

The problem is that the political situation in the UK right now is more unstable than it's been in a very long time. Hopefully the Queen will live at least another few years. If things were destabilised further around the end of October or the months afterwards, it could get very ugly. I don't really want to go into it too much because it doesn't feel right but it's a fact. The way things changed between, say, August 1989 and New Year's Eve of that same year was unbelievable.

Of course there are often serious events without anything going really wrong so hopefully it would all be ok anyway. I'm just pointing out that things are nowhere near as stable as we'd like to believe.

Ivy45 · 21/08/2019 10:36

I think it’s great that we can have this discussion and that it hasn’t been deleted (yet), as a lot of threads that criticise the monarchy do get deleted.

Unless mumsnet has suddenly been infiltrated by an anti monarchist group, then the comments on here tell me that there is less support for the monarchy then there was a few years ago. It would be interesting to see the results of a formal survey though.
