Sure the dress is alright (not my style) but God is it spiralling out of control.

and can’t quite believe people are mocking and posting pictures of strangers on an Instagram account and hashtag dedicated to a bloody dress.

I have it, I’ve worn it twice, I love it, and both times I’ve worn it I’ve had people (women) come up to me to tell me they love it too.

The only thing that’s baffling to me is why women on here get into such a lather and post such vitriolic comments about it tbh.

I was thinking today that it must look nice in the Vintage Blue colour @Bezalelle but I think white, grey, khaki AND blue might be a bit obsessive 😂

Given so many MNetters love to pile on how and brand the dress hideous and unflattering, I’d love to see them post their wardrobes here. Let’s see how stylish those judging and posting vitriol are eh.

I live in wiltshire and am currently in NI and have yet to see one other than on instagram.

I do like it but doubt it would suit me.

I think it's perfectly fine to say if you don't like this dress or any other garment for that matter. It only pisses me off when people actively slag someone else off for actually liking (in this instance) the dress rather than just saying they hate it themselves.

I've seen some awful things online about the dress (fine) and about the people who wear it (not fine). If I see someone bitching about someone/calling them names etc for liking it I immediately just think they're a wanker.

It was not my intent for anyone to post vitriol to the thread.
My original posts outlined that I was most confused by the online targeting, by taking photos of strangers to post and laugh at.

There were loads at Wimbledon in July. It wouldn't suit me but it's cute on a younger slimmer model.

I've just found it annoying to see so many articles claiming that this is THE dress that suits everyone of any shape and size, when I tried it on and looked like a pregnant Victorian milkmaid.

I'm so out of the fashion loop but I'd actually heard of this.

I can't abide spots, but reading the linked article I actually want to try it! (Id dye it black and turn it round). All these women must be onto something, right?

I do see what you mean @CheckingOutTheQuantocks this whole “it suits everyone” Thing is setting you up to fail. If it doesn’t suit you, you could end up thinking it’s you rather than the dress (which of course it isn’t)

It's all gone too far, including all the threads about it. To be honest I haven't seen an online article about it that hasn't been inferring there is some fashion genius behind dyeing it (like everyone and their dog has now been doing for several weeks). Shortly there will be no colours left to dye the thing that haven't gone viral and hourly that will give up the ghost too! People just like to feel relevant I suppose!

The dress is fine, I'm sure there are better, I've seen it a few times IRL and liked it on people but equally it is hardly universally flattering either. If I owned it I probably wouldn't wear it at this point though because it's like a red rag to a bull so it wouldn't exactly have been worth the cost per wear if I had.

On a plus side, we'll now have bloggers and retailers clamouring to discover the 'next Zara dress' and go viral so at least there'll be plenty of long sleeve smock dresses to look at over AW

I’m in the SE and I’ve seen a few here and in London. On others it’s nice enough dress although I don’t get the fuss, it wouldn’t suit me though. I’m short and pear shaped, I look best in fitted clothes, anything long and flowing makes me look dumpy.

If something is being pitched as The Dress, and everyone is going out, buying it, and wearing it, of course people are going to have an opinion on it.

It's naive to think otherwise.

It's clearly a very marmite style - you either love it or hate (tent-type styles, I'm thinking, will be something you either love or hate). This makes comment even more likely.

Interesting that men don't rush out, en mass, and all buy up the exact same item and swish about town in it.

There is something about the mass purchasing of some supposed 'amazing' item that really is ripe for taking the piss.

Wear what you want, embrace your style choices, but don't be altogether surprised if people think you wearing the exact same item (not even similar - exact same!!) as every other person is pass-remarkable...

It’s absolutely fine to disagree on clothing and the reason there is “vitriol” is because many posters disagree with it being touted as the hottest dress this summer / a miracle that suits everyone / being called “The Dress”

I’m excited cos since reading this I saw the dress at the railway station
I hasten to add it was on a person not out and about on its own
It was teamed with an orange leather jacket and it did look good on the wearer
