Sure the dress is alright (not my style) but God is it spiralling out of control.

I’ve just read this www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/the-zara-dress_uk_5d516d12e4b0fd2733f353b1

and can’t quite believe people are mocking and posting pictures of strangers on an Instagram account and hashtag dedicated to a bloody dress.

This is all news to me but as someone short and skinny I just know that dress would look hideous on me. I need fitted clothes that emphasise my virtually non-existent boobs, waist and bum. The dress is OK but not for me and I am struggling to see what the fuss is about.

Walkaround · 17/08/2019 22:35

There is no such thing as a dress which is flattering on everyone - unless looking like a sack of spuds is flattering.

SteadyAreYouReady · 17/08/2019 22:41

It’s bloody hideous Grin

OooErMissus · 17/08/2019 23:28

I think some people interpret 'flattering' as:

'Doesn't accentuate the bad bits' (which a tent that barely touches any part of your body definitely does does achieve).

Rather than:

'Accentuates the good bits and hides / deflects from the bad bits, so as to make me appear an improved version of myself'. This will be different for every shape and height.

And yes, there are clearly people out there who don't seek out 'flattering' clothes, but the fact that you've bought such a bandwagon item, that appeals to you, and you (presumably) feel good in, belies that.

Nobody's going to spend money on - and wear - something they actively think makes them look bad.

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/08/2019 23:54

I have seen pics of it and it’s not for me - but there is no way I would wear a dress that popular anyway, you are going to bump into people in it all the time!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/08/2019 08:07

@Purplecatshopaholic as people clearly are! I must have seen at least 10 women wearing it since I became aware of the trend a couple of weeks ago. You don't even notice key Primark pieces worn in the same numbers!

It would be interesting to see if the frock's popularity has been so high in France for example. I suspect not.

JonSnowIsALoser · 18/08/2019 09:00

I live in London and have never heard of it or seen it till now. Alternate reality surely?

Eustasiavye · 18/08/2019 09:01

I haven’t seen anyone in it.
If you like it wear it.
I think the key message from it’s popularity is:
Women want easy to wear items with
1)sleeves
2) long length so not having to worry about wearing tights with it or it being too short and impractical.
3) it’s not low cut so therefore suitable for all occasions,
4) it covers your underwear, so you don’t have to worry on that front,
5) it’s in a good pattern/ easy to wear colour
6) it’s loose fitting so looks far better on most women.
This also makes it suitable for all/most occasions.
Also it looks good with trainers /pumps/flat shoes.

@ScaryBunnyPainting

Sorry that your thread about people slagging off people who wear a dress, has turned a thread slagging off a dress Grin

OooErMissus · 18/08/2019 09:12

I don't think the dress's feelings are too hurt.

OooErMissus · 18/08/2019 09:23

Actually, surely that should be 'dresses' feelings' given there are squillions of them... Grin

Someonetookmyusername · 18/08/2019 09:28

Agreed Eustasiavye.

I'm busty, I always used to wear v-necks and wrap dresses when I was younger, as I believed them to be more flattering. I just used to get people (not just men) staring at my chest all day long. I don't blame them really, I see pictures of me then and 'the girls' are all I see.

Now I wear higher necks (not roll necks but ones like the one on this dress) all the time. I love that more modest styles are in fashion now. Flattering means different things to different people, I'm glad people look at my face when they talk to me.

Someonetookmyusername · 18/08/2019 09:32

OooErMissus

I just meant it's been a bit of a derailment. Ome that I have contributed to aswell ^

Cannotresist · 18/08/2019 09:33

It’s not to my taste at all pattern wise, but if it didn’t have the bottom frill would look a lot better style wise.

I don’t really think that’s what her OP was about? It was more about slagging off the people who were mocking/posting photos of wearers of the dress to an Instagram account.

As fug as the dress is, on that point, I agree with her. Slagging it off anonymously is one thing. But taking photos without consent of people wearing it, uploading said photo with commentary to a website and inviting comment is another thing altogether.

Having perused the Instagram account though, a lot of the photos seem to be selfies by the owners. So maybe they’re taking back power? Grin

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Good for them.

roisinagusniamh · 18/08/2019 09:44

I am against people being shamed for wearing it.
It is not a nice dress and does not suit any figure , yet , has sold massively because certain women believe the hype around it. It's the blind conformity that saddens me.

Someonetookmyusername · 18/08/2019 09:53

I feel similarly about watching love island, or I'm a celebrity.

Vivianebrookskoviak · 18/08/2019 10:27

"Universally flattering?"

Going by the New York Post photo if you're petite you'll be lost inside it or it'll be trailing along the floor.
I don't think I've ever seen a more boring dress.

Vivianebrookskoviak · 18/08/2019 10:30

Oh and on an insta post of the dress there was this comment..
"This dress looks like something Mrs Doubtfire would wear"
I see exactly what they mean.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/08/2019 10:30

I've seen dozens of it, sometimes in the same tube carriage.

NK1cf53daaX127805d4fd5 · 18/08/2019 10:33

Never heard of it. Not mad on it either but more because it wouldn't suit my shape

Cannot escape this dress on Instagram but not seen many in west coast Scotland

Depends who you follow on the gram

My fault entirely, I thought it was a double typo. Blush
